Definitions
- THIS INVENTION relates to a toilet installation. It relates also to a basin assembly, to a toilet cistern/basin combination, and to a basin kit.
- the Applicant is aware of a toilet installation comprising a toilet bowl, a toilet cistern connected to the toilet bowl and having a water outlet through which water can be discharged from the cistern into the toilet bowl, a water overflow pipe protruding upwardly from the water outlet and through which excess water in the cistern can flow into the bowl, and a basin mounted on top of the cistern.
- the basin has a water outlet through which water can be discharged into the overflow pipe.
- the water discharged from the basin always passes into the overflow pipe, with resultant water wastage. It is hence an object of this invention to provide a toilet installation with which this problem can at least be alleviated and with which fresh water used for toilet flushing can be conserved.
- a toilet installation which includes a toilet bowl; a toilet cistern connected to the toilet bowl, the cistern having a water inlet, a water outlet through which water can be discharged from the cistern into the toilet bowl, a water overflow pipe protruding upwardly from the water outlet and through which excess water in the cistern can pass into the bowl, hand actuable valve means closing off the water outlet, and float operated valve means connected to the water inlet; a basin mounted on top of the cistern and having a water outlet through which water can be discharged into the cistern; and water channelling means inside the cistern, and adapted selectively to channel water, which passes through the water outlet of the basin, either into the cistern itself or directly into the overflow pipe.
- the cistern thus has a base, with sides protruding upwardly from the base.
- the water inlet may be provided in one of the sides, while the cistern water outlet may be provided in the base.
- the hand actuable valve means thus functions by normally closing off the cistern water outlet so that the cistern can fill with water; however, on being actuated by hand, the valve means permits water to pass from the cistern through the water outlet into the toilet bowl, thereby flushing the toilet bowl.
- the float operated valve means functions by preventing water from entering the cistern through the water inlet when a float thereof is at an upper level, ie when the cistern is full of water; however, when the float is at a lower level, ie when the cistern is empty, the valve means permits entry of water into the cistern.
- the float operated valve means may thus comprise a valve body mounted or connected to the cistern water inlet; a displaceable valve member inside the valve body, with the valve member thus being displaceable from a shut position in which it closes off the water inlet, ie prevents water inflow into the cistern, to an open position in which water can flow into the cistern; a lever pivotally mounted to the valve body and operatively connected to the valve member; and a float mounted to the lever.
- the lever moves upwardly under the influence of the float, it displaces the valve member from its open to its shut position, and vice versa when it moves downwardly under the influence of the float.
- the water channelling means may include an open ended water channel member having first and second ends and providing a water channel, and pivotal connecting means pivotally connecting the water channel member to the basin such that the water channel of the channel member is located below the water outlet of the basin and faces the water outlet.
- the channel member may be pivotal from a first position in which its second end is lowermost, ie located at a lower level than its first end, and in which water passing through the basin water outlet into the water channel is discharged directly into an upper end of the overflow pipe, to a second position in which its first end is lowermost, ie located at a lower level than its second end, and in which water passing through the basin water outlet into the water channel is discharged into the cistern.
- the pivotal connection of the channel member may be located closer to its second end than to its first end so that its first end will normally be in the lowermost position.
- the water channelling means may include channel member support means protruding from the lever of the float operated valve means.
- the channel member support means may be adapted, when the float is at an upper level, ie when the cistern is full and the water inlet is closed off by the valve member, to engage a first end portion of the channel member so that the channel member is in its first position in which its second end is lowermost, ie it slopes downwardly towards its second end.
- the channel member may be located in its second position in which its first end is lowermost, ie it then slopes downwardly towards its first end.
- the channel member support means may then be disengaged from the channel member.
- a water trap can, if desired, be provided in an upper end portion of the overflow pipe. This will prevent any odors passing from the toilet bowl into the cistern.
- the toilet cistern and components thereof, such as the overflow pipe, the hand actuable valve means and the float operated valve means may be of a known type.
- the hand actuable valve means may include a handle pivotally mounted to a side of the cistern, on the outside thereof; a displaceable valve member closing off the cistern water outlet; and an actuating member between the handle and the valve.
- the valve may, for example, be combined with the overflow pipe so that, on actuating the handle, the entire overflow pipe is lifted slightly, thereby permitting discharge of water from the cistern into the toilet bowl via the water outlet of the cistern. Once the cistern has been discharged, the overflow pipe automatically reseats itself, thereby closing off the water outlet and permitting the cistern to fill up again.
- the installation may include at least one tap mounted on, or in proximity to, the basin, to provide a source of water for the basin.
- the invention extends also to a basin assembly which includes a basin mountable on top of a cistern and having a water outlet, and an open ended water channel member, which provides a water channel, pivotally connected to the basin such that the water channel is located below the basin water outlet and faces the basin water outlet.
- the invention extends further to a toilet cistern/basin combination which includes a toilet cistern having a water inlet; a water outlet; a water overflow pipe protruding from the water outlet and through which excess water in the cistern can flow, in use; hand actuable valve means closing off the water outlet; float operated valve means connected to the water inlet; and a basin mounted or mountable on top of the cistern, the basin having a water outlet through which water can be discharged into the cistern; and water channelling means associated with the cistern and/or with the basin, the water channelling means adapted selectively to channel water, which passes through the water outlet of the basin, either into the cistern itself, or directly into the overflow pipe.
- the invention extends still further to a basin kit which includes a basin mountable on top of a toilet cistern; an open-ended water channel member which provides a water channel; and connecting means for pivotally connecting the water channel member to the basin below an outlet of the basin.
- the kit may include channel member support means connectable to a lever of float operated valve means mountable in the cistern.
- the kit may also include an overflow pipe having a water trap, the overflow pipe being mountable to a water outlet of the toilet cistern.
- the channel member support means and overflow pipe may be as hereinbefore described.

- reference numeral 10 generally indicates a toilet installation according to the invention.
- the toilet installation 10 includes a toilet bowl or unit, generally indicated by reference numeral 12, mounted to a floor 14.
- the toilet bowl 12 has a water inlet 16.
- the toilet installation 10 also includes a cistern or flush tank, generally indicated by reference numeral 20, mounted to a wall 18.
- the cistern 20 comprises a base 22 mounted to the water inlet 16 of the toilet bowl 12 such that a water outlet or drain 24 in the base 22 is aligned with the water inlet 16 of the toilet bowl 12.
- the cistern 20 also has sides in the form of a front panel 26, a rear panel 28, a side panel 30 and another side panel 32.
- the rear panel 28 is thus flush against the wall 18.
- the cistern 20 thus provides a water reservoir 33.
- the toilet installation 10 further includes a hand wash basin, generally indicated by reference numeral 40.
- the basin 40 is mounted on top of the cistern 20, and thus closes off the cistern 20. More particularly, the basin
- the basin 40 has a lip portion 42 which overhangs the side panels or walls 30, 32 as well as the front panel or wall 26 of the cistern and which is attached thereto by securing screws 44.
- the basin 40 thus provides a hand wash cavity generally indicated by reference numeral 46.
- Hot and cold water taps, indicated by reference numerals 48 and 50 respectively, are mounted to the basin 40, and are connected to hot and cold water supplies (not shown) by means of flexible hoses (not shown) so that the basin 40 can readily be removed to access the cistern 20.
- the basin 40 also has a water outlet or drain 52 through which spent water is discharged from the hand wash cavity 46 into the cistern 20.
- the basin 40 is thus complementary to the cistern 20, eg it fits flush on top of the cistern, and the basin 40 and cistern 20 together constitute a toilet cistern/basin combination in accordance with the invention.
- the cistern 20 is provided with a known manual or hand actuable flushing or valve means, mechanism or actuator, of which only some components are shown.
- the flushing mechanism includes an externally located handle
- the valve means includes an overflow pipe 56 having an enlarged lower end portion 58 which fits sealingly against a complementary component 60 protruding upwardly from the base 22 of the cistern around the outlet 24.
- the overflow pipe 56 is displaceable upwardly from a closed position as indicated in Figure 6, to an open position as indicated in Figure 5, on actuation of the handle 54.
- the overflow pipe is provided, in an upper end portion thereof, with a water trap, generally indicated by reference numeral 62.
- the water trap 62 prevents odors emanating from the toilet bowl 12 from entering the cistern 20.
- the overflow pipe 56 has an open upper end 64.
- the cistern 20 also has a water inlet, generally indicated by reference numeral 66, in its side panel 30.
- a valve body 68 To the inlet 66 is mounted a valve body 68. Inside the valve body 68 is located a valve member which can move from a shut position in which it closes off the inlet 66 to an open position in which water can flow through the inlet 66 into the cistern.
- a lever 70 is pivotally mounted to the valve body 68 and is operatively connected to the valve member.
- To the free end of the lever 70 is mounted a ball float 72.
- the valve member will be in an open position thereby permitting water to enter through the inlet 66.
- valve member when the ball 72 is in a high position as indicated in broken line in Figure 5 and in Figure 6, the valve member will be in its closed position thereby preventing further water from entering the cistern 20. In other words, the cistern 20 will then be full of water.
- the installation 10 includes an open-ended elongate water channel member 80.
- the water channel member 80 is U-shaped in cross-section, and is pivotally attached to the bottom of the basin 40, by means of a pivotal connection in the form of a pivot pin 82.
- the water channel member 80 has a first end 84 as well as a second end 86.
- the pivot pin 82 is located closer to the second end 86 than to the first end 84 so that the channel member 80 will normally, under gravity, assume the position as indicated in solid line in Figure 5 in which the first end 84 is located at a lower level than the second end 86.
- a channel member support 88 is attached to the lever 70, and is adapted to engage the water channel member 80 in proximity to its first end 84, as indicated in broken line in Figure 5, and in Figure 6.
- the user then actuates the handle 54 thereby permitting all the water to be discharged from the cistern 20, as indicated in Figure 5.
- the ball float 72 will then move to its low position as indicated in Figure 5.
- the water passing through the basin outlet 52 will pass along the water channel member 80 to assist in filling up the cistern 20 since the first end 84 of the water channel member 80 will then be located at a lower level than its second end 86.
- the channel member 80 thus assumes this position automatically due to the off-centre location of the pivot pin 82 relative to the channel member ends 84, 86.
- a funnel (not shown) can be provided at the upper end 64 of the water overflow pipe 56, to facilitate entry of water from the water channel
- both the basin outlet 52 and the water overflow pipe 56 can have diameters of about 3cm.
- the basin 40 can be in the form of a wash basin as shown in the drawings, ie having relatively low sloping sides and being suitable for washing one's hands and face. However, if desired, it may be somewhat deeper with more steeply sloping sides (not shown) so that it is then in the form of a wash trough or receptacle in which clothes can be washed.
- the Applicant believes that with the installation 10, space savings will be achieved as compared to known toilet installations in which a hand basin is provided separately from the toilet bowl/toilet cistern. Additionally, water savings will be achieved with the installation 10 since water used in the basin 40 is re-used for flushing purposes, thereby conserving fresh water that is used for flushing.
- water channel member 80 which permits a limited flush only when a user has only urinated into the bowl 12.
- a full normal flush can be avoided when a user has only urinated into the bowl 12.
- the full normal flush is available if the toilet bowl 12 contains solid matter that has to be flushed, and water from the basin 40 is then re-used and thus assists in filling the cistern 20, thereby contributing to further fresh water savings.
- use of the flushing mechanism when the toilet bowl is only slightly soiled is avoided (water from the basin is then discharged directly into the overflow pipe), there is less wear-and-tear on the flushing mechanism.
- the cistern 20 can be smaller than the cisterns of known toilet installations.
- the cisterns of known toilet installations can typically have a volume of about 91?
- the cistern 20 can have a volume of about 11, while still having a comparable flushing efficiency to that of the known toilet installations.
