Abstract

A lighting apparatus for discharge lamp comprising a DC power supply (1), an inverter circuit comprising switching elements (2, 3) for converting a DC current from the DC power supply (1) into a high frequency current, a discharge lamp (5) being lighted with a high frequency current from the inverter circuit, a choke coil (4) for limiting the current of the discharge lamp (5), a coupling capacitor (7) being connected in series with the discharge lamp (5), a current transformer (21) having a secondary winding and connected, on the input side thereof, to the joint of the discharge lamp (5) and the coupling capacitor (7) and, on the output side thereof, to the high voltage side and the low voltage side of the DC power supply (1) through diodes (20, 19), respectively, and a protective circuit (9) for stopping oscillation of the inverter circuit based on a voltage induced in the secondary winding of the current transformer (21).
