Abstract

Method for delivering a gene of interest to the heart and to blood vessels or vascular tissue comprising the following steps: inserting into the said tissues a catheter in fluid communication with an inflatable balloon formed from a microporous membrane, and delivering to the said tissue through the catheter a solution containing a vector comprising a gene of interest and capable of expressing said gene into said tissues. In a preferred embodiment such vector is an adeno-associated vector or an adenoviral vector. This method can be used for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases, in particular hyperproliferative vascular disorders, such as restenosis, or ischemic diseases, such as peripheral artery diseases or coronary artery diseases, or atherosclerosis.
