Abstract

A communication system which automatically routes phone calls over a communications network (102) comprises a computer server (101), coupled to the communications network (102). The server (101) receives a programming telephone call from a programmable handset when the user (103) of the handset places a telephone call, the server (101) authenticates the user of the handset and determines the geographic area (106) associated with the handset. The server then selects a local point of presence (POP) (108) on the communications network (102) associated with the geographic area (106), and the server (101) sends a programming signal to the handset in order to program the telephone number associated with the local POP (108) into the handset, whereby further calls initiated from the handset are automatically routed to the local POP (108). The communication system also automatically routes elected phone calls over a communications network (102) using a database stored in the handset. The database associates each of a plurality of dialed strings with either a default service provider or an elected service provider. A controller in the handset applies strings dialed on the handset to entries in the database and routes each call dialed on the handset in accordance with information stored in the database.
