Definitions
- This invention relates to a utility vehicle with front and rear driving means against the ground and a work tool in front of the front driving means, in which power means is coupled to the work tool for adjusting the elevation of the work tool.
- machines of the kind defined above has not been used for larger grading work, for example road grading, since the road will mostly be less even than when conventional road grading machines are used which have their steered wheels a long distance ahead of the grading blade.
- the degree of fullness is essential for the work efficiency when loading with a loading machine, and a low degree depends usually on low penetration into the bulk mass to be loaded.
- the invention can be utilised for various kinds of work, for example road grading, snow removing, ice cutting, loading, pisting, etc.
- the invention is defined by the claims.
- FIG. 1 shows in a side view a contractor's utility vehicle which is in accordance with the invention. Detailed description of an illustrated embodiment of the invention
- the figure shows a utility vehicle, a contractor's utility vehicle, in the form of a tractor with a work tool in the form of a blade.
- the tractor has a pair of driving front wheels 12 and a pair of driving rear wheels 13 and most of the weight of the machine is on the rear wheels since the power drive including the diesel engine is located above the wheels 13. Either the front pair or the rear pair of wheels is steerable.
- the machine carries in a conventional manner a blade 11 in two arms 14 which are swingable about horizontal shafts by means of power means in the form of hydraulic cylinders 15, the lifting cylinders.
- the blade 11 is removably mounted in plates 16 which are pivotably mounted in the outer parts of the arms 14.
- the plates are pivotable by means of power means in the form of hydraulic cylinders 17, tilting cylinders, and a linkage 18, which give the blade 11 a parallel movement when it is raised or lowered by means of the lifting cylinders 15.
- the blade 11 has rear mounting plates 20 and upper and lower beams 21 ,22 between the mounting plates 20 and the blade 11 proper.
- On the lower beam 22 is a sensor 23 that senses the horizontal force on the blade 11. This sensor 23 is coupled to a control device 24 which in turn is coupled to control the lifting cylinders 15.
- the machine has both its front wheel and its rear wheels driving, and the normal force available between the wheels and the ground and the distribution of the normal force between the two pair of wheels determines the driving force for any coefficient of friction.
- the work tool tends to have a large vertical force against the subsurface, which reduces the normal force of the front wheels correspondingly so that their driving force is reduced.
- the control device 24 control the lifting cylinders 15 so that they raise the work tool when the horizontal force sensed by the sensor 23 increases and lower the work tool when the horizontal force decreases, one will get a fast automatic adjustment that maintains or increases the total normal force of the wheels against the ground and thereby their driving force.
- control device 24 can solely consist of a control valve in the hydraulic system of the machine, controlled by the sensor 23, but it can also comprise a processor or a complete computer. Then, one can have various boundary conditions in the programs for various work. However, the basic idea is still that one should directly or indirectly sense the horizontal force and use this information to control the height adjustment of the work tool.
- the set value of the controlling horizontal force should also be adjustable.
- the vertical force on the work tool increases, for example by increased filling of a scoop
- this increased burden will statically load the front wheels.
- the horizontal resistance will simultaneously increase and the driver will open the throttle in order to maintain the forward movement.
- the driving force will always give a moment that will lift the front and the increasing driving force will increase this moment and, as a result, the rear wheels will also have an increased normal force to the ground.
- the load in the scoop will be used to effectively increase the driving force of the tractor.
- the invention will give the same optimum distribution of the driving force also for other types of work than loading.
- the invention can be utilised on machines on crawlers, for example pisting machines. Then the front wheels, that is, the front driving means against the ground, correspond to the front portion of the crawlers, and the rear wheels, that is, the rear driving means against the ground, correspond to the rear portion of the crawlers.
- the cutters should have an angle of attack obliquely downwards/forwards so that they will be subjected to a downward force during the cutting. Then both the load of ice in the scoop and the dynamic force on the ice cutters will result in an increased driving ability of the drive wheels. A machine that utilises the invention will therefore have as great a capacity as a a much heavier machine that does not utilise the invention.
- the work tool When not utilising the invention during grading of a road, the work tool will make a depression when the front wheels reaches a depression. When the front wheels then reaches the new depression, the work tool will make another depression and so on.
- the invention will avoid such a repetition and the invention will result in a better result of the grading.
- the invention will also compensate for the spring action of the rubber tires. Also in a grading operation the weight of a load in the work tool will increase the driving ability in the way described and a machine with a low weight can therefore do the same work as a heavier conventional machine.
- an active control of the invention may be of value only for certain parts of the work.
- the active control When loading bulk material for example, the active control may be applied only when a pre-defined resistance to penetration is reached and the operator starts to tilt the scoop upwards. The operator need then only control the tilting. The lifting will be automatically controlled when the invention is applied and the degree of fullness of the scoop will be good.
- the essential advantage is that the driving force increases and is optimally distributed between the pairs of wheels, which is the basis for a good filing of the scoop.
- the invention can also advantageously be applied to fully automated machines without a driver.
