Abstract

A communications system (10) includes a base station (14) operable to communicate with a terminal unit (12) over a wireless interface (28) and a packet network (18) coupled to the base station (14) and operable to communicate with the base station (14). The system (10) also includes a network management system (20) coupled to the packet network (18). The network management system (20) is operable to generate a management message to manage the terminal unit (12). The network management system (20) is also operable to transparently communicate the management message to the terminal unit (12) and to transparently receive a response to the management message from the terminal unit (12).
