Abstract

An access point (1) includes a backplane having a clock interface and a plurality of slots for accepting an inquiry scan card (24) and a plurality of data cards. The inquiry scan card (24) detects an inquiry transmitted by a master wireless device within the range of communication with the access point (1) and transmits an inquiry response to the master wireless device to signify an intent to establish a wireless data link. The inquiry scan card (24) selects one of the data cards to establish the data link with the master wireless device and sends a message to the selected data card to wait for a connection request transmitted by the master wireless device. Upon detecting the connection request, the selected data card transmits a connection response to the master wireless device and sets itself in an active mode for a bi-directional data link with the master wireless device.
