Abstract

The invention relates to method, apparatus, program and memory for encoding video image. In the method the best motion vector candidate MVC providing the smallest sum of absolute differences SAD is searched for in two stages. In the first stage the search is performed as follows: (602) defining a first search area for a previous image, (604A) forming in the first search area a first SAD between the pixels in the first block indicated by each first MVC and the pixels in the block to be encoded in such a manner that (604B) a representative group of pixels in the first block is used to form each first SAD, and (612) selecting a first MVC providing the smallest first SAD as the best MVC. Then at the second stage the search can be performed normally at a second search area that is smaller than the first search area.
