Abstract

A mode specific computer system hardware resource sharing system based on a hardware controller including a dedicated memory system, a number of switches located as connection links between network interfaces and networks, a Data Compression Unit 34, a Disc Request Handler 31 and a Memory Swap Unit 32 (MSU). The controller denoted System Isolation Handler (SIH) is adapted to be inserted between a computer and at least one hard disc. The hardware resources including hard discs and networks are controlled by the SIH 2 so that a fraction is shared and other mutually exclusive fractions are mode dependent. Each mode is a fully isolated system including mode specific operating system and applications. By virtue of the MSU, the swap, from one mode to another, is done either automatically or on demand by the user and will take place promptly. Given an unconnected private mode and an Internet connected public mode a complete Internet security is obtained.
