This information may be presented to the user by surveying program 1012 itself, by reporting program 1060, or by another program. Programs to display and manipulate information are well known in the art.

When monitoring program 1022 detects that new software has been installed, it could invoke surveying program 1012. By so invoking surveying program 1012, the information regarding installed products would be kept up to date automatically.

This information is also relevant and useable by the asset management tool of the present invention. Therefore, the present invention also includes the expedient of feeding the information concerning the inventory and/or usage of software to the management tool to allow various data center configurations to be modeled and evaluated from the point of view of arriving at a total cost of ownership evaluation data.

Abstract
