Dabei wird die im wesentlichen lineare Strömung in eine rotierende Strömung umgesetzt, so daß beim weiteren Weg des gasförmigen Mediums durch das hohlzylindrische Filtermittel 6a sich Flüssigkeitspartikel und Feststoffpartikel am Filtermittel βa, insbesondere unter Ausnutzung der Koaleszens, abscheiden. Das bedeutet, daß nur noch die im gasförmigen Medium verbliebenen restlichen Verunreinigungen vom Hauptfilter 5 ausgefiltert werden müssen. Entsprechend länger ist deshalb die Standzeit des Hauptfilters 5. Das auswechselbare Vorfilter 6 sollte aus einem preiswerten und/oder leicht zu reinigenden Filtermaterial bestehen, damit die Betriebskosten des Filters auch bei einem häufigen Wechsel des Vorfilters 6 niedrig bleiben.
