Definitions
- This invention relates to an arthropod repellent composition and more in particular to a bee and/or wasp (yellow jacket) repellent composition comprising oleic acid or an ester thereof as active ingredient.
- the repellent composition according to the invention is preferably non-toxic, non-noxious, non-corrosive and odorless.
- US 5,859,057 discloses a cockroach repellent based on linoleic acid and an antioxidant preservative agent resulting in a synergetic composition, which composition prolongs over time a desirable action and whose vapors do not form a flammable mixture with air.
- Still another important object of the present invention is to provide an environmentally safe repellent composition that is easy to use, stable and not biogradable.
- a further important object of the invention is to provide a repellent composition which is easy to spread and can form a one-molecular film on the surface whereon it is deposited.
- a further object of the invention is to provide an environmentally repellent that can be stored in for a long period, i.e. more than one year without loosing any repellent activity and capable of retaining the active compound fluid suitable for emplacement and dispensing as a non-immobilized fluid.
- This invention discloses oleic acid or an ester thereof as an active ingredient arthropods repellent compositions, in particular bee and wasp repellent compositions, consisting of a non-toxic, non-noxious, non-corrosive compound, that is substantially odorless to humans comprising a spontaneously deactivating, biodegradable composition of matter which possesses a sustained temporal activity. Its embodiment is particularly useful in emplacements and devices for substantially repelling the undesired visitation of areas and volumes by bees and wasps.
- Filtration from the press cake results in the oleic acid of commerce (red oil), which is purified and bleached for specific uses for example soap base, manufacture of oleates, ointments, cosmetics, polishing compounds, lubricants, ore flotation, intermediate, surface coatings, food-grade additives.
- red oil oleic acid of commerce
- the present bee and wasp repellent is suitable for excluding bee and wasp presence and infestation even in sensitive areas such as food storage and preparation areas.
- the active substance semiotic pheromone of the subject invention naturally signaling to spatially proximate bees and wasps that the treated area is unattractive and not desirable for bee and wasp presence, is oleic acid or an ester thereof. It may be substantially pure, or a majority component of a less pure mixture derived from natural or synthetic sources. The inactivation is exacerbated and speeded by the presence of light and heat. Oleic acid brought into contact with or solved methanol, ethanol or any other alcohol reacts partly into the corresponding oleate ester. Said compositions are soluble in water and thus easier to use in certain applications.
- antioxidant agents which serve to substantially prolong the desirable action of the oleic acid.
- the antioxidant agents protect its chemical and physical integrity against reaction with oxygen and air pollution alone or in the presence of light.
- suitable antioxidants consisting of commercial and specialty chemicals and their combinations, mixtures and proprietary compositions that are well known to those educated in the art.
- Many of these antioxidant agents can be employed to advantageously prolong the desirable bee and wasp-repellent activities of the invention when incorporated within oleic acid.
- One particular antioxidant agent possesses a particularly effective and safe activity, and is the preferred embodiment within the invention to prolong and intensify its action over time. This combination is thus synergistic, the sum of the components exerting an effect greater than a linear combination of the isolated effects of the single components taken in isolation.
- Oleic acid in an alcohol solvent optionally plus an antioxidant is an oily liquid easy to dispense in the minuscule quantities necessary for advantageous bee and wasp repellency.
- Compositions according to the invention form a one-molecular layer on surfaces on which they are deposited. This results in the non-fatty appearance, which was often present in known solutions.
- the present invention is a composition of matter created from active materials in particular contingent proportions of at least 10 % vol/vol oleic acid and around 60 % vol/vol alcohol, methanol, ethanol or any other alcohol.
- the amount of the antioxidant is preferably from 0,001 - 0,1 % by weight of the total composition.
- oleic acid is, due to their solubility in water an alkylester for example methyloleate or ethyloleate. Oleic acid is therefor brought into contact with methanol or ethanol, in which medium the oleic acid dissolves.
- a multiple-choice test was developed for pre-trained bees and wasps in an open space. In said space 16 areas (4 X 4 cm) were all provided with a solution of sucrose. Some of the sucrose solutions were misted with a solution according to the invention. The bees and wasps were monitored by camera and the repellent values calculated. No significant difference was found in the use of pure oleic acid or methyloleate i.e. the methanol did not interfere.
- A10% volume oleic acid solution reduced the attractiveness to zero.
- the present invention encompasses a bee and wasp repellent and process for safely storing the repellent in a package or container so as not to destroy the integrity of the repellent before it is subjected to use.
- the preferred composition of the bee and wasp repellent comprises oleic acid and an antioxidant preservative agent mixed in the following relative quantities:
- a transport system consisting of a tube and the associated coupling means for the transport of glucose was provided with a thin layer of a repellent composition consisting of
- the effectiveness of the repellent product according to the invention was tested positively, i.e. 100% repellent active for more than one week for several arthropoda.
- a single treatment with the product according to example I caused a 100% repellent active treatment for more than one week on several treated objects, such as rotten fruit and/or rotten meat or crop harvests.
- Drosophila melanogaster (Ditera), in particular on rotten fruit 3.
- Phoridae (Diptera) on rotten meat
- Pediculus humanus (Diptera) on the hair of several infectious volunteers, they remained at least one month free of fleas 7. Pseudococcus longispinus (Homoptera) disappearing completely after a single treatment of the crop harvest
- Orchesella cincta (Collembola) 10.
- Forficula auricularia (Dermaptera)
