Abstract

In a wireless translator base station having a ground sector transceiver for communicating with a plurality of mobile subscriber units and a backhaul transceiver for communicating with a base transceiver station, a method of automatically measuring the isolation between the backhaul channel and ground link channel is provided to prevent oscillation, receiver desensitization or a combination thereof. In this approach, a test signal (4A) is generated in the ground sector at transceiver at a selected or predetermined frequency and power level, transmitted from the ground sector antenna and received at the backhaul transceiver. The power level of the received test signal is then compared to the power level of the transmitted test signal. Similarly, a test signal (4B) is generated in the backhaul transceiver at a selected or predetermined frequency and power level, transmitted from the backhaul transceiver and received at the ground sector transceiver. The power level of the received test signal is compared to the power level of the transmitted test signal. If either comparison reveals improper isolation between the transmitted test signals and the received test signals, a warning signal is generated and transmission is stopped.
