- This invention relates to a closing mechanism for a drink bottle and has been devised particularly though not solely for use with an insulated flask.
- a closing mechanism for a drink bottle having a liquid reservoir and an access opening communicating between the reservoir and the exterior of the bottle, said mechanism comprising a plug moveable into and out of the access opening in a closed and open position, respectively, said plug being formed integral with a leaf spring which is attached to the bottle and arranged to bias the plug into the access opening in the closed position, a first cam means also formed integral with the plug, a plunger supported relative to the bottle for transverse movement across the bottle, a second cam means mounted on the plunger and engageable with the first cam means, arranged such that transverse movement of the plunger causes the plug to move between the closed and open positions and wherein the leaf spring with the plug in the open position urges the plunger, via the second cam means, radially outwardly from the bottle.
- the closing mechanism further comprises a resilient button located in a side wall of the bottle and engaged with the plunger such that pressure on the button causes the transverse movement of the plunger.
- the plug, leaf spring, and first cam means are moulded as a single item from a suitable plastics material .
- said suitable plastics material comprises acetal.
- the first cam means incorporates an inclined surface adapted to slide against a complementary inclined surface on said plunger.
- the complementary inclined surface on said plunger is located at the end of said plunger opposite to said button and is angled at approximately 45 degrees to the transverse movement of the plunger across the bottle.
- the plunger is moulded from nylon or acetal .
- the resilient button has its peripheral edges engaged with an aperture in the side wall of the bottle and its central area engaged with the adjacent end of the plunger such that the resilient nature of the button causes the plunger to be withdrawn to its original position upon release of pressure from the button.
- Such movement of the plunger allows the first cam means to slide back up the inclined surface forming the second cam means at the end of the plunger, allowing the plug to be biased into a sealing position within the access opening by the leaf spring.
- the access opening is located within an inclined surface forming the base of a depression or recess in the top of the drink bottle.

- an insulated drink bottle suitable to hold hot beverages such as coffee or tea is formed from a body having an outer cylindrical casing 3 with which is engaged an inner cylindrical lining 2 leaving an insulating cavity between the outer casing 3 and the inner lining 2.
- the cavity may be provided with a reflective shell 10 and a vacuum formed in the cavity in the manner that is well known for the provision of insulated vacuum flasks .
- Beverage is contained within the inner liner 2 as shown at 9.
- the drink bottle is further formed from a cap 11 typically secured to the body by way of a coarse screw thread (not shown) and sealed by way of an O-ring 6.
- the upper part of the cap 11 is provided with a contoured recess 1 adapted to hold a small amount of liquid, which is handy to contain any overflow, or to contain a small volume of liquid for cooling preparatory to drinking.
- the recess 1 has a base 12 in which there is an access opening 13 normally sealed by a plug 14.
- the opening 13 and the plug 14 may be any desired shape but are typically a distorted ovoid shape to suit the delivery of hot liquid into the recess 1.
- the plug 14 is preferably formed as an. integral part of a moulded plastic spring member 4, which has leaf spring portions 16 and mounting means 17 for securing the spring member 4 into the body of the cap 11.
- the spring member 4 further incorporates first cam means in the form of an inclined surface 18 for movement of the plug 14 against the biasing action of the leaf spring 16 as will be described further below.
- the closing mechanism further includes a plunger 7 mounted in the cap 11 of the bottle to permit transverse movement of the plunger 7 relative to the lid e.g. from right to left as seen in Figure 3.
- the plunger 7 incorporates second cam means in the form of an inclined cam surface 19 at one end of the plunger 7, arranged to engage the inclined cam surface 18 on the spring means 4 so that transverse movement of the plunger 7 across the cap 11 causes the first cam means 18 to slide down the inclined second cam means 19, causing the plug 14 to be moved downwardly against the biasing action of the leaf springs 16 allowing liquid to pour through the opening 13.
- the plunger 7 is operated by way of a resilient button 5 formed form any suitable resilient material but preferably from santoprene, a synthetic rubber, having its peripheral edges 20 engaged with an opening in the side wall of the cap 11 and further having its central area 21 engaged with the end 22 of the plunger 7 which is opposite to the second cam means 19.

- the resilient button 5 bulges outwardly from the cylindrical side wall of the cap 11 permitting a user to readily locate and press the button 5 by thumb or finger pressure causing the plunger 7 to move from right to left as seen in Fig. 3 and the first and second cam means 18 and 19 to slide against one another, releasing the plug 14 from the opening 13. Because the button 5 is resilient, it pulls the plunger 7 back to the initial (sealing) position once pressure if released, assisted by pressure from the leaf springs 16 acting via the cam means 18 and 19.
- the plunger 7 and the spring means 4 can be made of any suitable material, it is preferred that the plunger 7 is made from nylon and the spring means 4 from acetal which is not only slippery (enhancing the operation of the cam means 18 and 19) but has good memory characteristics under high temperature.
- a closing mechanism for a drink bottle which is simple to use and it enables liquid to be dispensed in a safe manner with easy coordination by the user. Furthermore the mechanism has very few moving parts and is therefore reliable and robust in use and simple to manufacture and assemble.
