Abstract

The present invention relates to a method for loading large-size and one-piece loads on a carrier ship, such as ice slabs, and for unloading them from said ship. The method involves withdrawing the loads from the water and placing them directly into the hold of the ship. The loading operation is carried out in a loading section which is located at the aft or bow portion of the ship and which is defined by elongated flanges extending deep into the sea, by mobile partitions and by hold gates. The loading section comprises a reception compartment as well as a transit compartment, wherein loading is achieved by adjusting the water level in said compartments. This ice carrier ship comprises a dual-wall intermediate bodys well as side bodies for the machinery. In order to arrange the loads in the hold, the method involves using a flotation system of the barge-container type which comprises dual thermal-insulation walls and which is freeze-attached to the walls of the hold during transport onboard the ice carrier ship.
