Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a synthesizer apparatus, and more specifically to a multi-purpose, module-based synthesizer apparatus for performing a variety of chemical syntheses.

  • the apparatus automates chemical synthesis.
  • a particular new feature of the apparatus is that the same basic unit can be applied to various chemical syntheses and that individual devices can be linked to form a network of different synthesizers, to accelerate the development of syntheses and processes, and also, if required, to permit the production of larger amounts of substances, by using several devices simultaneously.

  • Effective and versatile research equipment is typically rather difficult to operate and usually requires an operator who is familiar with one or more apparatuses.
  • large apparatuses are almost entirely useless, if some component breaks down or if it takes a long time to service or find a repair technician. Naturally, this reduces both the effective operating time of the apparatus and the results achieved with it.

  • the present invention also has the advantage that purchasers can first acquire a single device for a relatively small sum of money and check that it operates in practice. This situation is shown in Figure 2, in which there is only a single synthesizer module 8 with its control computer 9. After this, the number of devices required by the research can be safely added, resulting in the network solution according to Figure 3 as described above, if this is necessary.
  • a single synthesizer developing a fault can be detached from the network for servicing, while the others continue to operate as before.
  • a network of devices is very suitable for synthesis development, as the parameters (temperature, speed of addition of substances, mixing speed, etc.) are independent in each device.
  • all the synthesizers in the network can be set to carry out the same synthesis.
  • Another extremely important feature of the invention is that, in a research group, a smaller apparatus entity can be given to an individual researcher, to carry out a sub-project. Similarly, in operator training, a new operator can use a single device, while the other devices are used for active research use.
  • Figure 4 shows clearly the division of an apparatus entity into units with one, two, and three synthesizers.
