Definitions
- This invention relates in general to backpacks, and more particularly to backpacks which enable the wearer to comfortably carry bulky and sometimes fragile items comfortably while leaving the arms and hands free for other purposes .
- This goal is accomplished by reinforcing or rigidifying one surface of an instrument carrier to support adjustable shoulder and hip belts, while also placing an auxiliary carrier on the opposite side of the instrument carrier.
- a sectional backpack is provided such that the pack bag may be spaced from the frame or pack board while remaining secured thereto, permitting an instrument or other large, bulky object to be secured therebetween .
- a bulky object such as a guitar may be carried in the conventional fashion or alternatively carried on a person's back through the utilization of hideable straps which are secured to a reinforcing means within a soft guitar case.
- a soft guitar case having a reinforcing element to which shoulder and hip straps may be secured, and further including a removable auxiliary bag or satchel to allow the transportation of material in addition to the instrument.
- a further object of the present invention is to provide a convertible backpack which may be utilized for carrying a bulky instrument or the like, and further utilizing the rigidified frame as the back of a chair in conjunction with a detachable seat element.
- Figure 1 is a pictorial representation of a soft guitar case, including hideable shoulder and hip straps.
- Figure 2 is a side view of the guitar case of Figure 1, further showing the detachable satchel.
- Figure 3 is an enlargement of a portion of Figure 1.
- Figure 4 is a front view of the guitar case of Figure 1.
- Figure 5 is a rear view of the guitar case of Figure 1, showing the carrying straps in their hidden condition.
- Figure 6 is a sectional view along lines 6-6 of Figure 1.
- Figure 7 is a pictorial representation of a traditional backpack in its closed and attached condition, and further depicting the removable seat pad.
- Figure 8 is an exploded representation of the backpack of Figure 7 in its separated condition for encapsulating a guitar case or the like.
- Figure 9 is another view of the backpack of Figure 7, with a guitar case in place.
- Figure 10 is an exploded view of the carrier of Figures 1-6.
- FIG. 1, 2 and 5 wherein is shown a soft guitar case, generally designated as 2, which conforms to the shape of a guitar itself and incorporates suitable padding to protect the instrument.
- the guitar case includes a pair of padded shoulder straps 4, 6 and a hip strap or belt having two parts 8, 10 which are to be wrapped around the waist of the wearer and then snapped together to secure the object in place.
- a cover 12 which has been rolled upwardly and secured to expose the shoulder and hip belts for use would hide the belt and straps when closed.
- auxiliary bag, satchel or auxiliary carrier 14 and a handles 16-17 are also seen in this view. It is to be understood that although the auxiliary carrier 14 is shown attached to the main case but it could include shoulder straps in addition to handle 17 and used independently.
- FIG 2 wherein the roller cover for shoulder straps and hip belts 12 may be seen and also the satchel 14 which is secured to the main bag by means of hardware, such as side-release buckles 18 at the top and bottom. Other quick-release securement means could also be used.
- FIG 3 securement of the hip belt 8 and a strap running from a shoulder harness 4 are shown secured to the main bag 2, it being understood that the securement in high stress situations, i.e. the top of the shoulder harness and its hipbelt, is through the outer fabric or cover to the rigid or semi-rigid packboard or frame secured within the interior portion of the main bag.
- Figure 5 discloses the continuous zipper 24 for securing the flap 12 when the shoulder and hip harnesses are in their secured, hidden position.
- Figure 6 is a sectional view taken along lines 6-6 of Figure 1, wherein it can be seen that the entire case interior and exterior is covered by a high density nylon material 24.
- the front of the case includes a foam plastic protective unit 25 sandwiched between the interior and exterior covers and the back includes an internal foam pad 26, and in addition, a rigidifying packboard or frame 28 is sandwiched between the outer two skins which, as noted hereinabove, support the hip and shoulder straps.
- the device comprises a separable backpack, including a frame or a packboard portion 40 to which is secured the shoulder straps 42 and the hip belt 44 which has secured thereto by a zipper 46 or the like a main bag portion 48.
- the advantage of securing the backboard or frame 40 to the bag 48 by a zipper means results in the fact that there is a completely closed compartment between the two main elements, into which may be stored an object such as an auxiliary seat as shown in Figure 7.
- Seat 50 has a flap 52 secured to which is one-half of a hook and loop fastener, the other half of which 54 is secured to the pack interior of the hip belt 44.
- the pack serves in a conventional fashion.
- the elements 40 and 48 are capable of being separated and are maintained as a separate unit by means of a series of adjustable straps 60 mounted at the periphery of the two joining portions, as best seen in Figure 8.
- a bulky object such as a guitar case 62 can thus be secured between the two elements, the straps tightened and the device enables carrying both the instrument and whatever gear is necessary for the outing.
- the present invention contemplates the simplification of carrying a bulky instrument such as a guitar on urban walks and commutes, or into areas not normally associated therewith, such as cycling, hiking and the like, without sacrificing the ability to carry a substantial amount of other required gear. Abstract
