Abstract

A system and process for measuring velocity of a fluid, such as a supersonic gas jet (44), is disclosed. The system employs modulated laser light (14) from a tunable diode laser (12). By modulated it is meant that the laser is dithered. Scattered light (48) is collected and passed through a cell (50) containing, for example, rubidium. The pattern of the scattered light is compared to a reference standard (18, 20). The Doppler shift of the scattered light versus the reference provides data that is used to calculate the velocity of the fluid.
