Definitions

  • This invention concerns a transport bed for especially gentle transport of people who are in a prone position in a transport vehicle, which is not necessarily an emergency vehicle; and for outdoor or indoor transport between the person' s starting destination, which could be a healthcare institution, and the vehicle; and also from the vehicle to for example some other form of healthcare institution.
  • the background for the invention is the difficult situation which people, either as patients or as people who have been discharged after treatment, who have special physical problems, experience during transport in a prone position: especially on long journies in a regular ambulance.
  • a problem which frequently occurs in addition to the difficult physical situation is that the person being transported is prevented from seeing the road while the vehicle is moving, which often results in travel sickness occurring. This risk increases proportionately with the length of the distance travelled. Patients who have hurt their backs, for example, or damaged their spinal cords, are usually transported on standard stretchers in ambulances which have been designed for responding to emergency calls .
  • a regular stretcher is stiff, has relatively no cushioning, is small and is constructed in such a way that it can be folded into a chair so that it may be carried down stairs.
  • the mattress in such a stretcher is divided up into short sections in conjunction with the folding points of the frame. One can feel the section divisions and edges when one is lying on such a mattress.
  • the narrow breadth is used deliberately in order to ensure that one can get through any door opening. Due to this narrow breadth, people with a normal build would have difficulty lying on their back on the stretcher, with their arms by their sides. Normal practice is therefore to strap the patients in with their arms across their chests.
  • the low height of the stretcher is designed specifically for stability during transportation and also because of the fact that there isn't room for anything more than the patient, the people treating the patient and any life-saving equipment such as a defibrilator, intubation equipment, oxygen apparatus, intravenous drips, tubes etc.
  • U.S patent 1 859 480 describes a stretcher with a special fastening device for assembly of the stretcher against a wall in the ambulance.
  • the feature which that stretcher has in common with this invention is that they both have vecal- axis pivotable wheels in forks. Otherwise the wheels look compact.
  • U.S. patent 2 303 618 illustrates similar pivotable wheel forks, together with a fixed, non-adjustable side bridle, as opposed to the embodiment of the invention's removable and/or height adjustable, possibly upholstered side bridle.
  • U.S. patent 2 249 351 is a special type of stretcher combined with a form of personal transport vehicle, where the stretcher is very low and designed to be loaded into the vehicle through the boot of a regular car and is pushed in where the back of the back seat is usually assembled, all the way into the front seat beside the driver, where the back of the passenger seat is pushed all the way back into a horizontal position. Otherwise there are no common features between that design and the embodiment of the invention, apart from the fact that it has wheels and one can lie on it.
  • U.S. patent 3 005 656 describes a device for securing a stretcher in a vehicle. It has a "heart support tray” which is shown in an upright position and it is uncertain as to whether or not it was meant to be adjustable. It also describes side bridles which are fixed and non-adjustable w L t to H P 1 .
  • Fig. 1 is a lateral or elevational view of the transport bed with an extension piece, a bridle with a support grip to help the transported person to move, and with the so-called “heart support tray” raised to approximately a 30 degree angle .
  • Fig. 2 is an end view of the transport bed seen from the foot of the bed.
  • Fig. 3 is an end view of the transport bed seen from the top end of the bed and showing, among other things, the caster wheels with forks .

In the event that the handle (lie) is removed in order to make room for a drip, bags of blood or any other medical equipment, then that particular area of use is omitted from the concept and intended use of the invention.
