Description

DISPENSING CLOSURE FOR MOUNTING ON A CONTAINER HAVING PIERCING MEANS
The invention relates to a set of parts for providing a flow path, particularly from a container, which may be a sterile container.
Such sterile containers often hold food or beverages or constituents thereof, which is required to be dispensed at a point of use, which may be in a bar, restaurant, fast-food emporium or elsewhere. The container thus needs to be pierced to allow for flow of the contents of the container through a flow path opened on piercing a wall of the container, usually a sterile membrane which initially covers an opening in a gland mounted on the container.
Prior piercing elements have not been able to provide a clean cut of the membrane.
It is accordingly an object of the invention to seek to mitigate this disadvantage.
According to a first aspect of the invention there is provided a set of parts for providing a flow path to or from a container, comprising a support part for mounting on the container, and a piercing element cooperable with the support part, the arrangement being such that when the piercing element and the support part are assembled, piercing means of the piercing element can project beyond the support part for piercing the container or part thereof.
The piercing means may comprise tooth means. This is a relatively simple construction, particularly where the tooth means may comprise a single tooth.
The single tooth may comprise a triangular configuration with a cutting edge for piercing and cutting the container or part thereof. The support part and the piercing element may have respective screw threaded parts which may be cooperate for assembly and relative movement of the parts.
The piercing element may comprise a cap.
The piercing element may comprise a dispense tube in an alternative arrangement.
The support part may be adapted for mounting in a dispense gland of a container.
The support part may comprise detent means whereby it may be mountable in the gland.
The detent means may comprise an annular projecting lip of the support part.
The support part may comprise a flange opposite the annular projecting lip.
The flange may comprise a seal device adapted for sealing with the gland.
The support part and the piercing element may each be separably integrally moulded from plastic material.
According to a second aspect of the invention there is provided piercer apparatus, whenever assembled from a set of parts as hereinbefore defined.
According to a third aspect of the invention there is provided a container, in combination with piercer apparatus as hereinbefore defined. A set of parts embodying the invention is hereinafter described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing.
The drawing shows schematically in part side elevation and part longitudinal section an assembled set of parts according to the invention.
Referring to the drawing there is shown a set of parts 1 for providing a flow path to or from a container 2, comprising a support or adaptor part 3 for mounting on the container 2 and a piercing element 4 cooperable with the support part 3, the arrangement being such that when the piercing element 4 and the support part 3 are assembled, piercing means 5 of the piercing element 4 can project beyond the support part for piercing the container or part thereof.
The support part 3 and piercing element 4 are each integrally moulded from plastic material.
The support part 3 has a cylindrical body 6 with an internal thread 7 and at one end detent means in the form of an annular ring or lip 8 which in use snap engages behind a shoulder of a gland 9 which has a cylindrical body in which the body 6 is a push-fit, there being a flange 10 of the support part 3 at the end opposite the annular lip 8 which engages against a flange 11 of the gland 9, there being a seal 12 in the form of an annular rubber seal carried by the support part 3 adjacent the flange 10. The seal 12 is in use trapped between the flange 10 and the flange 11 of the gland 9.
The piercing element 4 in one embodiment shown in full lines is a cap device which has a hand grip cap part 13 and a body part 14 with an external thread 15, there being at the end of the body part opposite the hand grip cap part 13, the piercing means 5 which is in the form of a single triangular tooth which projects longitudinally axially of the piercing element 4. The tooth 5 is pointed, and has a chamfered cutting edge 16 and a trailing edge 17, also chamfered and with an elbow and which is less steeply inclined than the cutting edge 16.
The body part 14 has between the hand grip cap part 13 and the thread 15 two axially spaced rings 18, 19 which act as seating devices.
In use, with the support part 3 mounted in the gland 9, in order to open a flow path, the piercing element 4 is inserted tooth first into the body part of the support part and is screwed home. As it is screwed into the support part 3, the tooth extends beyond the end of the body part of the support part and first pierces and then cuts a membrane 20 of a wall of the container 2, so opening up a flow path to and from the interior of the container. However, there can be no flow because the cap device 13 is blind, there is no through bore, and the annular seal rings 18, 19 prevent leakage past the threads 7, 15. To dispense product, the piercing element 4 is removed, and a dispenser is fitted.
In an alternative embodiment, shown in dashed lines, there is a flow path through the piercing element 4, provided by a tube or dispense spout 21 which opens through the hand grip cap part 13 into the cylindrical body part 14. Operation to pierce the container is as described previously herein.
In both embodiments, the membrane 20 is cut and is "latched" back by the trailing edge 17 of the tooth 5, which on unscrewing becomes a leading edge of the tooth, so ensuring a clear flow path for flowable contents such as a powder, a liquid or "syrup" in the container.
