Description
Liquid packaging material
Technical field
The object of the invention is Uquid packaging material comprising a base layer made of fibrous material, such as paper board, a barrier layer and one or more thermoplastic layers laminated onto the base layer in order to give the material the desired gas- and liquid barrier properties.
In a conventional liquid packaging material as described above, the fibrous base layer is laminated on one side with a barrier layer comprising thermoplastic layers or an alun inium layer, and on the other side with one or more thermoplastic layers. This kind of structure offers good liquid- and gas barrier properties, but there are certain drawbacks in handling the material. Namely, if this kind of material is used for making packages in which different mandrels and heat sealing tools have to be used in forming the body of the package, the jaws and holders of these tools, when heated to an adequate temperature in order to bring about a tight heat seal, come into contact with the surface layers of the liquid packaging material, consisting of plastic material. This means that the jaws, holders and equivalent parts are stained with molten plastic, causing disturbing stoppages for cleaning.
Summary of the invention
The object of the present invention is to introduce a liquid packaging material that meets all the usual liquid- and gas barrier requirements set for liquid packaging materials, without the above-mentioned drawbacks. This can be achieved by a liquid packaging material according to the invention, characterised in that the material on the outside of the base layer, i.e. the outermost material listed from the product to be packed in the material, contains at least one intermediate layer of thermoplastic, a paper layer and a lacquer layer or a layer of other equivalent material.
In the hquid packaging material in accordance with the invention as described above a situation has been obtained in which the surface of the material forming the outer surface is not a layer of plastic, but a paper layer covered with a lacquer layer, whereby the surfaces of hot tools do not get stained when coming into contact with the lacquer layer, and, therefore, do not need frequent cleaning.
Advantageously, the Hquid packaging material in accordance with the invention further comprises an ink layer which is located between the paper layer and the lacquer layer or a layer of equivalent material. Naturally, one of the most essential qualities of the ink layer is to inform the user of the contents of the package, but it also contributes to the moisture repellence of the outer surface.
In a hquid packaging material in accordance with the invention, the base layer can be dimensioned in a somewhat unconventional manner due to the paper layer forming a part of the material. It is desirable that the fibrous base layer is paperboard material, the basis weight of the base layer being in the range of 160-200 g, preferably about 180 g.
In a material according to the invention, on the top surface of the fibrous base layer is laminated at least one intermediate layer of thermoplastic, the basis weight of the intermediate layer of thermoplastic being in the range of 10-30 g, preferably about 15-20 g. Correspondingly, onto the surface of the thermoplastic layer is laminated a paper layer, the basis weight of the paper layer being in the range of 50-80 g, preferably about 60-70 g.
In a hquid packaging material according to the invention, the paperboard layer, the paper layer and the intermediate layer of thermoplastic between the two first- mentioned layers comprise a kind of sandwich-structure, which makes this hquid packaging material rigid but also suitably flexible for the kind of packages in which
the material has to be bent quite vigorously, for example, in connection with seam structures.
Description of drawings
The hquid packaging material in accordance with the invention is now described in greater detail by illustrating two exemplary embodiments with reference to the attached drawing, wherein
Figure 1 shows a cross-section of the first exemplary embodiment of the Hquid packaging material in accordance with the invention and
Figure 2 shows a cross-section of the second exemplary embodiment of the liquid packaging material in accordance with the invention.
Detailed description of the invention
Figure 1 shows a cross-section of the first exemplary embodiment of the Hquid packaging material in accordance with the invention. This Hquid packaging material comprises a barrier layer 4 formed by one or more thermoplastic layers and being in contact with the Hquid to be packed, hi the example described in Figure 1, the barrier layer 4 consists of three thermoplastic layers: a polythene layer 1 foπrring the outer surface of the material, a barrier-thermoplastic layer 2, such as an EVOH layer, laminated onto the surface of polythene layer 1 and a polythene layer 3 formed on the other side of the EVOH layer 2. Thanks to this structure of layers the liquid packaging material has good barrier properties, i.e. gas- and Hquid tightness.
Hi practice, the thermoplastic layers 1-3 comprising the barrier layer 4 are larninated onto the surface of a fibrous base layer 5, such as paperboard. The basis weight of the base layer 5 may, for example, be in the range of 160-200 g, most preferably
perhaps 180 g.
Onto the other surface of paperboard base layer 5 is laminated at least one thermoplastic layer 6. This layer can, for example, be of polythene, the basis weight of the thermoplastic layer being, for example, in the range of 10-30 g, most preferably perhaps 15-20 g. In this way paperboard layer 5 can be sealed tightly between the thermoplastic layers, whereby it is resistant to moisture and maintains good carrying properties.
An extremely crucial part of the Hquid packaging material in accordance with the invention consists of paper layer 7, which is laminated onto the surface of the thermoplastic intermediate layer 6. This paper layer 7 together with base layer 5 and thermoplastic layer 6, between layers 5 and 7, form a so-caUed sandwich-structure, making this Hquid packaging material rigid and easy to handle. The basis weight of paper layer 7 may, for example, be in the range of 50-80 g, most preferably perhaps 60-70 g.
In order to obtain water-repeUence of the outer surface of the Hquid packaging material and to prevent rapid penetration of external humidity into the material, paper layer 7 is further coated with an ink layer 8, which in turn is covered with a lacquer layer 9. The lacquer layer together with the ink layer make the outer surface of the material sufficiently water-repeUent.
In practice, the above-described Hquid packaging material has an essential advantage in that its outer surface does not contain thermoplastic layers and, therefore, the outer surface can be handled with hot tools, without damaging the material itself or staining the hot tools, which would mean that the hot tools would have to be cleaned with disturbing frequency. The reduced need for cleaning significantly improves the trouble-free operation and efficiency of the contamer-forrning machine.
Figure 2 shows a cross-section of the second exemplary embodiment of the liquid
packaging material in accordance with the invention. The embodiment of Figure 2 is an exact equivalent of Figure 1 as regards layers 5-9. The embodiment of Figure 2 differs from the embodiment of Figure 1 only in that the barrier layer, which in the embodiment of Figure 1 consisted of three thermoplastic layers 1-3, now includes an aluminium layer 11 bonded to the base layer 5 by a glue layer 12. The aluminium layer 11 is further coated with a thermoplastic layer 10, which is meant to be in contact with the product to be packed.
The Hquid packaging material in accordance with the invention has been described above only by way of two exemplary embodiments and it is to be understood that modifications can be made - especiaUy when it comes to the basis weights of different layers and the number, basis weights and materials of different thermoplastic layers - without deviating from the scope defined by the attached claims.
