Description
LOCK
The invention relates to a lock intended and adapted to form part of a door or other such element arranged hingedly in a frame defining a closed position by means of a stop edge. Such a lock is known in many embodiments.
An important object of the invention is to embody a lock such that the usual hole in the frame corresponding with a hole in a lock plate arranged on or flush-mounted in the frame is no longer necessary, thereby preventing a substantial mechanical weakening of the frame and avoiding a process necessary for making the hole.
It is a further object of the invention to embody a lock such that it can be opened from a closed position in the ergonomically most logical manner. Yet another object of the invention is to embody a lock such that it has an exceptionally simple structure can be manufactured from very few components, wherein some components can consist of plastic, which can substantially reduce even further the cost of the lock. In respect of the above objectives the invention provides a lock intended and adapted to form part of a door or other such element arranged hingedly in a frame defining a closed position by means of a stop edge, which lock comprises: a hook serving as closing bolt for hooking co- action with a pin arranged fixedly on the inner surface of the frame and protruding from this inner surface; a rotatable bolt shaft bearing the hook, wherein the hook and the bolt shaft are locked against mutual rotation; spring means which engage on the bolt shaft and urge the hook to a rest position corresponding to co- action with the pin;
2 first operating means for rotating the bolt shaft out of said rest position counter to the action of the spring means, which first operating means comprise an operating shaft which extends in transverse direction relative to the main plane of the door and which co-acts with the bolt shaft such that a rotation of the bolt shaft results from a longitudinal displacement of the operating shaft, on at least one end of which operating shaft is arranged a handle; wherein the arrangement is such that, when the or a handle is operated by pulling or pushing in the direction corresponding with opening of the door, the hook undergoes a movement out of the hooking co-action with the pin; and wherein the hook has an inclining face on its outer surface such that when the door is closed the hook can pass over the pin via this inclining face and then comes into hooking co-action with the pin under the influence of the spring means. The door with a lock according to the invention can be closed in the usual manner, i.e. by pushing against the door in the direction of the closed position. Due to the presence of the inclining face on the outside of the hook, this latter will be lifted by the force applied counter to the action of the spring means and thus pass over the pin, whereafter the hooking co-action between the hook-shaped bolt and the pin is brought about by the action of the spring means, whereby the door is closed. By now translating the operating shaft in longitudinal direction a rotation of the bolt shaft will occur. By choosing the appropriate direction unlocking will take place either by pulling or pushing and the door can thus be opened.
A specific embodiment comprises securing means for locking the bolt shaft against rotation, which securing means can be operated from at least one side of the door by means of second operating means. The lock can be
3 locked against opening using such securing means. Such an embodiment will in general preferably be embodied such that the securing means can only be operated from one side. This is practical for instance for locking the door of a hotel room. This variant can also be used as childproof lock.
A preferred embodiment has the special feature that the first operating means are also the second operating means, the operating shaft is coupled to the bolt shaft such that a rotation of the operating shaft results in a longitudinal displacement of the bolt shaft, and the bolt shaft comprises a rotation locking cam for locking co-action with a stop at a chosen longitudinal position of the bolt shaft such that the securing means can be operated by rotation of the or a handle.
Yet another embodiment has the feature that the longitudinal position of rotation-locked position of the bolt shaft corresponds with a further protruding of this shaft relative to the door such that the bolt shaft can engage in a hole present in the frame adjacently of the pin. This embodiment has the advantage of an additional increased security.
This latter embodiment can advantageously have the special feature that the lock comprises a plate for fixing on, in particular flush-mounted in, the frame, which plate bears the pin and is provided with a hole corresponding to said hole. The plate and the pin are preferably manufactured from a mechanically strong material, in particular steel. With a view to the desired mechanical strength, the hook and the bolt shaft can preferably also be manufactured from a strong material such as steel. Although no very great demands are made of the operating shaft since the forces in question are not exceptionally great and the strength of this shaft is not decisive for the security provided by the lock, the operating shaft too can be manufactured at least partially from a strong material such as steel.
4
Suitable plastics such as ABS and fibre-reinforced plastics can also be envisaged here.
In order to enable use of the lock according to the invention in doors which open in both the one and the other direction, a variant can have the special feature that the hook is separate from the bolt shaft and can be coupled to the bolt shaft in two mirror-symmetrical positions .
This latter variant can be embodied such that the hook and the bolt shaft can be mutually coupled by means of a non-round pin-hole coupling.
The invention will now be elucidated with reference to the annexed drawings. Herein: fig. 1 shows a cut-away perspective view of a lock according to the invention arranged in a door construction; fig. 2 shows a view corresponding with fig. 1 of a variant; fig. 3 shows an exploded view of a hook and a bolt shaft in a specific embodiment; and fig. 4 is a cut-away perspective view of a second variant.
Fig. 1 shows a lock 1 which is received in and thus forms part of a door 2 arranged hingedly in a frame 4 defining the shown closed position by means of a stop edge 3.
Lock 1 comprises a hook 5 serving as closing bolt for hooking co-action with a pin 7 arranged fixedly on the inner surface of frame 4 by means of a steel plate 6 and protruding from this inner surface 5.
The lock further comprises a rotatable bolt shaft 8 bearing hook 5 such that the hook and the bolt shaft are locked against mutual rotation.
A helical torsion spring 9 engages relative to a stationary sleeve 10 on a ring 11 present on bolt shaft 8 such that spring 9 urges hook 5 into a rest position corresponding to co-action with pin 7.
5
An operating shaft 12 extending in transverse direction and mounted in a bush 41 bears an operating handle respectively 13,14 on both sides. The operating shaft is provided with an operating face 15 which can be placed in pressing co-action with a control cam 16 connected to bolt shaft 8. By moving one of the handles 13,14 in the direction of arrows 17, shaft 8 is thus rotated and hook 5 is also lifted and rotated as according to arrow 18. A user wishing to open the door need therefore exert only a pushing force or a pulling force on one of the handles 13,14. The door is hereby opened easily and reliably. In order to close the door it is only necessary to push against the door. The inclining cam face 19 on the outside of hook 5 will hereby rotate upward counter to the action of torsion spring 9 and under the influence of the fixed position of pin 7 and thus pass over pin 7, whereafter it comes into the hooking co-action therewith shown in fig. 1. Fig. 2 shows a lock 21 in an embodiment differing from fig. 1. In this embodiment bolt shaft 22 bears a cam 23 which can be pushed by a driver 24 welded fixedly on operating shaft 25. In wholly analogous manner as in the embodiment of fig. 1, by operating handle 13 or handle 14 the hook 5 can be swivelled as according to arrow 18. Shaft 25 also bears a toothed wheel 26 which can co-act with a gear rack part 27 consisting of ribs on bolt shaft 22. By rotating one of the handles 13,14 as according to arrow 28 bolt shaft 22 can be displaced outward as according to arrow 28 by this transmission, wherein it can engage in hole 29 in steel plate 30 which also bears pin 5. Not shown is that due to this displacement as according to arrow 28 cam 23 can also provide a locking against rotation of bolt shaft 22 by co-acting with a stop (not shown) in the housing of lock 21. A double security is hereby ensured.
6
Fig. 3 shows a hollow bolt shaft 31 having an end zone 32 with longitudinal slotted holes 33 which can co- act with radially inward extending protrusions 34 in a through-hole 35 in a hook 36. It will be apparent that an effective locking against rotation is ensured by coupling hook 36 to bolt shaft 31. By employing a relatively close fit, the required coupling with sufficient strength can be realized for instance by means of a little tap with a tool. Hook 36 can also be fixed to bolt shaft 31 mirror-symmetrically, whereby the lock in question can also be applied for a door opening in the other direction.
Fig. 4 shows a lock 51. This lock is provided with means for locking which differ from those in the variant of fig. 2. The lock according to fig. 2 can be embodied such that toothed wheel 26 is rotated by rotating handle 14 as according to arrow 28 so that closure is brought about. In order to prevent this closure being released by corresponding rotation of handle 13 in reverse direction, handle 13 can be mounted for free rotation relative to shaft 25. Such an embodiment is particularly important for use in hotel rooms.
The lock of fig. 4 makes use of two handles 52,53 which can only be moved axially. Handle 53 bears a rotatable knob 54 which co-acts via a shaft 55 with toothed wheel 26. This latter co-acts with a gear rack 55 which protrudes from a shaft 56. The hollow bolt shaft 57 bearing hook 5 has a rotation locking wedge 58 for locking shaft 56 against rotation. After displacing knob 54 by rotation as according to arrow 59 into the closing position of shaft 56, gear rack 55 is displaced forward to a position in which hook 5 can no longer be rotated. The double closure already described with reference to fig. 2 is thus obtained with both the bolt shaft and the hook. For said rotation locking of hook 5 the sleeve 60 in which shaft 57 is mounted has a generally L-shaped slot-like opening 61. The hook is
7 spring-loaded by a torsion spring 62. Handles 52 and 53 are locked against rotation by a rotation locking wedge 63 which co-acts with a correspondingly formed recess 64 in a guide bush 65 which forms part of housing 66 of lock 51.
The lock according to the invention consists of very few components, a number of which can be embodied in plastic. Although in principle the lock has a simple structure, it nevertheless meets very high quality standards, while the cost can be very low compared to that of known locks.
