Abstract

Disclosed herein is an information system having a server (12) and a pluralities of terminal units (14). Each of the terminal units (14) and the server (12) include software having a proprietary protocol. The terminal units (14) initiate contact with the server through normal telephone channels such as public switch telephone network. Once contacted the server (12) and terminal units (14) exchange proprietary protocol and establish an on line session. The server (12) obtains the electronic mail for the particular terminal unit (14), downloads the mail to the particular terminal unit (14) and then upload any electronic mail that the terminal unit (14) wants to send. Offline the terminal unit (14) is used to read, create, edit and delete email. The server unit (12) calls external servers for services including electronic mail.
