Abstract

A cooking vessel for use with induction heating cooktops contains all input elements for controlling the induction heating in e.g. a handle of the cooking vessel. The power supply is obtained by converting the ELF radiation used to heat the cooking vessel, and the control buttons, temperature sensing means and transmission means to the power controller for the induction coils are all fitted into the handle. This creates a functionality of induction heating which has not been known before.

Description

A control system for use with induction heating cooktops.
The invention relates to controls for use with induction heating cooktops.
Three main advantages are known in respect of the use of induction heating for cooktops, 1) the surface may be completely flat and hence easy to clean. 2) the surface does not become hot due to the primary transfer of energy, 3) the cooking vessel does not need to have a plane bottom surface. A further advantage is: the thermal time constant of heating is basically only dependent on the cooking vessel. In latter years various attempts have been made to integrate the cooktop in a kitchen environment by suitable choice of colours and other styling features. Even natural materials, such as marble or wood have been suggested for cooktops, using the induction principle.
Although induction heating in relation to cooking has been known commercially for ca. 20 years, the controls are still mainly disposed in the traditional manner, such as in an area near the hob fitted with knobs, however the possibility of remote control is not unknown due to the increasing automatisation of kitchens. However, little account seems to have been taken of the fact that the provision of electromagnetic wireless energy in the exact location of the cooking vessel opens new fields of control of the cooking process.
It is the purpose of the invention to provide a new manner of controlling the cooking process, and this is obtained by providing in the cooking vessel a receiver for electromagnetic energy, a converter to generate a supply voltage suitable for an electronic circuit, a control circuit connected to control buttons provided in a cool part of the cooking vessel, transmission means for the wireless transmission of control signals to a receiver in the proximity of the cooktop, and power control means controlled by signals received by said receiver. In induction heating, it is only the heat generating part (where the eddy currents are set up) which really gets hot, and it is completly unproblematic to provide the circuit and controls in a part of the cooking vessel, such as in the handle, a space which is not at a temperature much higher than room temperature. This is in opposition to traditional heating methods where the whole cooking vessel (and part of the space above it) is heated.
In an embodiment of the invention the cooking vessel is further provided with indicator means which indicate that induction power is supplied to the vessel. This is a simple but effective device, because it would basically only need rectification of the received ELF energy to drive e.g. LED components placed visibly on the cooking vessel.
In a further embodiment of the invention the control circuit comprises an input from a temperature sensor placed in functional relationship to the food contained in the cooking vessel. In this manner, automatic control of the cooking process may be obtained.
In a further advantageous embodiment of the invention a storage of supply voltage is provided in conjunction with the control circuit. This enables the first switching-on of the induction heating cooktop to provide electrical power for the control cirucuit. In case the storage has been discharged over time, a short burst of ELF energy from the induction heating coil structures is sufficient to recharge the storage. Such a short burst is completely insufficient to heat anything at all and will not have any adverse effect whatsoever. The storage means may be a supercapacitor.
According to a further advantageous embodiment of the invention the transmission of control information from the cooking vessel to the cooktop occurs via infrared radiation. This is natural to use in an remote control environment as components and circuits are readily available.
According to a further advantageous embodiment of the invention the transmission of control information from the cooking vessel to the cooktop occurs via radio frequency radiation. As the range will be extremely short, in the order of metres or maximally tens of metres, authorisation to use radio communications will not be difficult to obtain. j
According to a further advantageous embodiment of the invention the transmission of control information from the cooking vessel to the cooktop occurs via ultrasonic radiation. Again, in similarity with IR this is a form of energy which is different from the EMC environment that the control circuit will be working in, and circuits and components are readily available.
The invention will be described in greater detail with reference to the drawing, in which is shown a cooking vessel comprising a control circuit disposed in a part which is not heated during use.
A cooking vessel 1 is provided with a receiving coil 2 which collects part of the electromagnetic field set up by the coil structure 3 of the induction heating cooktop.
The ELF signal is converted by means of a power converter 4 comprising a rectifier into a power supply voltage which is buffered by a storage element 5, such as a supercapacitor. A circuit 6 containing all input 7 and communications 8 parts of a control is supplied by this voltage. An exemplary push-button 9 is shown as well as a connection 10 to a temperature sensor 11 in close proximity to the food to be cooked.
The signal emitted from the circuit's output port 8 is collected by the power controller 12, and the control circuit 6 may form part of feedback cooking. Indicator means 13 may be connected either via the circuit 6 or directly via a diode to the receiving coil 2.
These indicator means advertise the fact that the cooking vessel is energised and that the contents may be hot.
