Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a new concept of the element of an electrosurgery known as dispersive electrode, neutral electrode, or return electrode, used in electrosurgery.
  • An electrosurgical device is a surgical instrument consisting of three elements reflected in Figure 1: a high frequency generator -1-, an active electrode -2- and a neutral or dispersive electrode -3-.
  • a problem presented by current electrodes is that, when they are designed for single use, they are economically expensive to manufacture and use.
  • a second problem is the high volume and toxicity of waste generated due to the components used in its manufacture, mainly based on acrylic and thermoplastic products, making it difficult to eliminate it by generating a high level of dioxin emission in its incineration.
  • a third problem is the skin trauma caused by the withdrawal of the return electrode after surgery due to the high adhesive capacity of the adhesive element.
  • a fourth problem is, despite the compatibility of existing systems, that a neutral electrode will only be fully operational with its specific high frequency generator model.
  • the object of the present invention is to offer the possibility of having a device that is economically less expensive, that is adequate to the current safety requirements for both the patient and the professional, that is functionally more effective in response to a wide range of Surgical needs, that is of simple application without increasing the conventional scheme of work of the personnel of the hospital center and that its use generates a minimum volume of non-polluting residues thanks to the easy elimination of the integral components of the disposable element.
  • Second figure.- Shows in detail the neutral electrode object of the present invention.
  • Third figure.- It illustrates some of the different forms that the neutral electrode object of the present invention can take.
  • the neutral electrode object of this invention patent whose scheme is presented in figure no. 2 allows to reuse the elements that do not have direct contact with the patient, that is, the connection cable to the generator -4- and the electrode itself -6-, which will be integrated and protected by a flexible backup support -5- that will avoid any accidental high-frequency referral to hospital staff and effective protection against fluids occasionally spilled on the contact electrode -6-, which may be single -8- or double -6-, depending on the generator used and the User body structure, allowing to reuse this element
  • the patient contact element is formed by a disposable sheet of conductive wet gel -7- with adhesive properties on both sides.
  • the new neutral electrode object of the present invention has a reusable element independent of the disposable conductive contact gel with the patient.
  • the reusable element is provided with a connection cable with the high frequency generator that has an encapsulated connection system designed in such a way that minimizes the fatigue produced in the cable as consequence of multiple reconnections to the generator.
  • the cable -4- is made of a flexible material resistant to torsion and tensile and insulating, with a length between 3 and 5 meters whose conductive cores will have a suitable section according to the maximum power in high frequency generators (normally 300 watts) and with a resistance, in any case, less than 1 ohm.
  • connection of the cable cores with the electrode -6- integrated in the backing material -5- is carried out by means of joining clips or any type of welding that does not affect the total resistance of the assembly, the connection of the connection cable being with the metal electrode coated and integrated, for its isolation, in the backup material as shown in figure 3. Its dimensions will be determined by the patient's body surface and the generator output power used in the intervention.
  • the backing material is composed of a support made of a flexible and waterproof material such as silicone. It may take different forms that will condition the format of the conductive gel, some of which are schematically illustrated in Figure num. 3 designated with the letters a), b), c) and d), the preferred forms being a) and b). Its fundamental function is to act as carrier support of the contact or metallic contacts arranged in sheets that configure the dispersion zone -6-.
  • the fundamental element is the disposable conductive gel, which is in contact with the patient's tissue and the support element described above, whose purpose is to transfer to the generator, by fixing the back support of the gel, the high frequency induced by the electrode active. Its dimensions will match those of the back support, which will be sized according to the patient's body surface. It is configured as a sheet of an approximate thickness of one to three millimeters with a jelly-like consistency and composed of a water base of at least 38%, and metallic particles in suspension predominantly, among others, magnesium and, to a lesser extent, silicon , zinc and aluminum, which increase the conductivity of the base and significantly reduce the contact impedance of the electrode.
  • This composition makes it possible to avoid unwanted separations between the disposable gel sheet or contact area and the skin resting below effectively supporting the usual working conditions in terms of adhesion, surface formability and fluid tolerance, minimizing the risk of electrosurgical burns.
  • the use is especially suitable for high frequency generators that have the contact quality control system, totally eliminating the risk of electrosurgical burns.
  • the disposable gel provides bacterial protection on the applied surface.
  • the reusable element is long lasting and low maintenance because it does not require special storage conditions; It is easy to clean after use because it lacks pronounced angles and cavities, even supporting the sterilization commonly used in operating rooms.
