Abstract

A device and method for treating collapsed bronchial tubes found in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma are provided. The device includes an elongated member (10) having a heating element (12, 14) that comprises one or more energy delivery members (18). The method includes heating the bronchial tube to cause at least a portion of the cross links of the collagen in the wall to unlink/open and subsequently form new cross links after the collagen fiber has realigned. The procedure effectively reinforces the structural integrity of the wall and thereby prevents the lumen from collapsing.

Claims

AMENDED CLAIMS

1. An apparatus for treating a bronchial tube having a collapsed or partially collapsed lumen which comprises: a treatment device comprising an elongated member and a heating element that comprises one or more energy delivery members which when energized causes tissue in the wall of the lumen to undergo a structural transformation effective to render die wall capable of supporting a non-collapsed lumen; and a source of energy that is conducted to the heating element.
2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the one or more energy delivery members each comprises an electrode band being spaced apart from an adjacent electrode band.
3. The apparatus of claim 2 wherein each electrode band has a width of about 0.2 mm to about 3 mm.
4. The apparatus of claim 2 wherein each electrode band is spaced about 0,5 mm to about 10 mm apart from an adjacent energy band.

visual signal.

14. The apparatus of claim 10 wherein the feedback indicator is indicative of temperature.
15. The apparatus of claim 10 wherein the feedback indicator is indicative of electrical characteristics.
16. An apparatus for treating a bronchial tube having a collapsed or partially collapsed lumen which comprises: a treatment device comprising an elongated member and a heating element that comprises one or more electrodes, comprising non-ferrous material, which when energized causes tissue in the wall of the lumen to undergo a structural transformation effective to render the wall capable of supporting a non- collapsed lumen wherein a segment of the elongated member comprises expandable material, wherein the one or more electrodes are positioned on an outer surface of the segment, and wherein the treatment device further comprises an electromagnet located in an interior region of said segment; and a source of energy that is conducted to the electromagnet.

A method of treating a bronchial tube having a collapsed or partially collapsed lumen of an individual that comprises the step of: heating the wall of the lumen to a temperature effective to cause tissue in the wall to undergo a structural transformation to render the wall capable of supporting a non-collapsed lumen.
26. The method of claim 25 wherein heating forms a treated bronchial tube that is patent,
27. The method of claim 25 wherein the wall is heated to a temperature in the range between about 40*C and about 95βC.
28. The method of claim 27 wherein the wall is heated for about 1 to about 120 seconds.

The method of claim 25 wherein the step of heating the wall comprises: advancing a treatment device into the lumen of the bronchial tube of the individual; energizing the treatment device to raise the temperature of the wall to sufficiently effect tissue in the inner wall to undergo a structural transformation.

30. The method of claim 29 wherein the step of heating the wall comprises raising the temperature of the wall to an elevated temperature in the range of about 40°C to about 95°C.
31. The method of claim 30 wherein the wall is heated at the elevated temperature for about 1 to about 120 seconds.

The method of claim 29 wherein the treatment device comprises an elongated member and a heating element that comprises one or more energy delivery members which when energized causes tissue in the wall to undergo a structural transformation to render the wall capable of supporting a non-collapsed lumen; and a source of energy that is conducted to the heating element.
33. The method of claim 32 wherein the one or more energy delivery members each comprise an electrode band being spaced apart from an adjacent electrode band.
34. The method of claim 32 wherein a segment of the elongated member comprises elastic material and wherein one or more electrodes are positioned on the surface of the segment.
35. The method of claim 32 wherein the one or more energy delivery

40. The method of claim 32 whereby heating the wall causes the wall to form one or more of patency bands each characteristic of tissue that has undergone said structural transformation whereby the patency band(s) prevent the lumen from collapsing.
41 , The method of claim 40 wherein each patency band has a contour substantially resulting from the affect of one or more of the electrode bands.
42. The method of claim 32 further comprising the step of de- energizing the heating device and thereafter removing the heating device from the bronchial tube.
43, The method of claim 42 wherein the step of de-energizing is initiated in response to signals indicating that the structural transforation has reached a desired level.
44. The method of claim 32 wherein heating the inner wall causes the inner wall to form a pattern that is characteristic of tissue that has undergone said structural transformation whereby die pattern prevents the lumen from collapsing.
45. A method of training a person to treat a bronchial tube of an individual that has a collapsed or partially collapsed lumen that comprises
32 demonstrating or instructing the performance of the following steps: heating the wall of the lumen to a temperature effective to cause tissue in the wall to undergo a structural transformation to render the wall capable of supporting a non-collapsed lumen.
46. The method of claim 45 wherein heating forms a treated bronchial tube that is patent.
47. The method of claim 45 wherein the inner wall is heated to a temperature in the range between about 40° C and about 95 °C.
48. The method of claim 47 wherein the wall is heated for about 1 to about 120 seconds.
49. The method of claim 45 wherein the step of heating the wall comprises: advancing a treatment device into the lumen of the bronchial tube of the individual; energizing the treatment device to raise the temperature of the wall sufficiently to cause tissue in the wall to undergo a structural transformation.
50. The method of claim 49 wherein the step of heating the wall comprises raising the temperature of the wall to an elevated temperature in the
33 range of about 40°C to about 95°C.
51. The method of claim 50 wherein the wall is heated at the elevated temperature for about 1 to about 120 seconds.
52. The method of claim 49 wherein the treatment device comprises an elongated member and a heating element that comprises one or more energy delivery members of sufficient width so that when energized causes tissue in the wall to undergo a structural transformation to render the wall capable of supporting a non-collapsed lumen; and a source of energy that is conducted to the heating element.
53. The method of claim 52 wherein the one or more energy delivery members each comprises an electrode band being spaced apart from an adjacent electrode band .
54. The method of claim 52 wherein a segment of the elongated member comprises elastic material and wherein one or more energy delivery members are positioned on the surface of the segment.
55. The apparatus of claim 52 wherein the one or more energy delivery members comprise one or more sets of double electrode bands wherein each set comprises a first electrode which is connected to the positive electrode
34 to form one or more of patency bands each characteristic of tissue that has undergone said structural transformation whereby the patency band(s) prevent the lumen from collapsing.
61. The method of claim 52 further comprising the step of de- energizing the treatment device and thereafter removing the treatment device from the bronchial tube.
62. The method of claim 61 wherein the step of de-energizing is initiated in response to signals indicating that the structural transformation has reached a desired level.
63. A modified lung wherein a bronchial tube having a collapsed or partially collapsed lumen that has been treated by a process that comprises the step of: heating the wall of the lumen to a temperature effective to cause tissue in the wall to undergo a structural transformation to render the wall capable of supporting a non-collapsed lumen.
