Definitions

  • This invention relates to a connection device for connecting two members, particularly for use in connecting fractured bones in animals and humans, but also of wider technical and engineering application.
  • the invention aims to provide a connection device which can provide a continued dynamic effect, in the case above a continuous pressure urging the bone together.
  • This device which may be described as a 'dynamic fish plate' because of its similarity to the connections made between each rail in a railway line, is construct ⁇ ed of a shape memory alloy material and could replace similar devices used to connect two or more separate components together and introduce a compression force to the connected parts to improve strength and rigidity of the separate members.
  • the fish plate may be attached by established fixing devices. These may be e.g. screws, bolts, studs, rivets, springs or certain fusion welding techniques.
  • a connection plate (Fig. lb) is constructed of a strip of shape memory alloy whose dimensions are 85.0mm long, 13.0mm wide and 3.0mm thick. It has four fixing holes, two at either end of the strip. It also has a slot, 3.0mm wide, 25.0mm long, machined in the central portion of the fish plate. The slot is orientated in the long axis of the strip. The slot enables the material lying at either side of this slot, to be deformed by pulling each part, in the same plane but in opposite directions. To limit excessive strain m tne deformed parts, a tool is used to ensure that the deformation does not allow stress concentrations at any specific point. The deformation is substant a ly rounded (see Fig. la) . The geometry described is to be the memorised shape .
  • the pre-memory shape of Fig. lb is however the geometry desired when the dynamic fish plate is initially at ⁇ tached to its separate member. Consequently, the Fig. la shape has to be squashed back at the same time as the member is subjected to a heat treatment ( as is known in the art ) in order to store the memorised shape.
  • the fish plate may be warmed to "recall" ts memory.
  • ts memory When th s happens, outward radial extension of the metal lying either side of the previously described slot, causes a change in the pitch relationship of the fish plate fixing holes, see Fig. la.
  • the dynamic fish plate may be used in any situation where two or more components of an appropriate geometry need to be joined together. This situation arises in human bone fractures, particularly the long bones of the arms and legs .
  • the device would be attached to the bone components using established medical fixing devices .
  • the fish plate is fixed in its pre-memory shape, the fractured bones being manipulated so that the bone ends are in intimate, firm contact.
  • the shape memory alloy will be configured so that the memory transform temperature is about 30°C. Normal body core temperature is 37°C and heat contained within the body allows the transform to take place. A compressive force is then introduced at the fracture site which assists both in strength, integrity and length of time taken to affect a suitable repair.
  • the plate need not be flat, but may be shaped to fit the member to be connected. This has the additional effect of adding stiffness.
  • the device may also be used to join more than two members, and the force applied by the coupling may in some circumstances need to be outwards.
  • Highly elastic versions of the alloy may be used to avoid cyclic and corrosion stresses, such as are commonlv found in biomedical environments.
