Description

PACKAGING AND SALES HOLDER,
ESPECIALLY FOR PANEL-SHAPED OBJECTS
The invention relates to a packaging and sales holder, especially for essentially panel-shaped objects, with upwardly extending side-walls and a base connected to the latter, which is formed by an insert made from corrugated cardboard with a U- shaped cross-section that is fixed inside the holder and which abuts with two lateral upwardly extending flanges against the inside surfaces of two oppositely disposed side-walls and forms the floor of the holder with its base surface connecting the flanges.
Packaging holders for merchandise are often used after being opened to display the merchandise in the shop, on supermarket shelves, for example In this case, the aim is to present the individual products to the customers in such a way that they are clearly visible and easy to extract, irrespective of whether the packaging holder is still largely tilled with products, or whether a large proportion of the products in the holder has already been removed. Since the packaging holders of the type under discussion are throw-away items, they need to be manufactured in the cheapest possible way. Nevertheless, it is imperative that a relatively high quality cardboard is used for the side-walls of the holder, on which appealing advertising representing the merchandise has to be printed. In contrast, the base can be made from simpler material. Hence the prior art teaches that instead of a base formed in the conventional manner by means of folding flaps on the bottom edge of the side walls, a relatively simple insert made from inexpensive material, such as e g. corrugated cardboard can be used, which is, for example, folded into a U-shape and abuts with its side flanges against the inside surfaces of two oppositely disposed side-walls whilst forming the floor of the holder with the base surface connecting the flanges. In these type of prior art solutions, the insert is held in place inside the holder with the aid of adhesive, adhesive strips, staples or similar.
Although this provides a means of saving on materials, the production cost is in some cases even higher than for a holder with integral base flaps because the holder and the insert first have to be produced as separate parts, then Drought together, aligned and finally joined up. The invention is therefore based on the task of providing a packaging and sales holder of the generic type, which can be manufactured in a particularly simple and inexpensive way According to the invention, this task is solved in the case of a packaging and sales holder of the above-mentioned kind in that the insert has projecting tongues on both longitudinal ends of the flanges, which engage in corresponding recesses in the side-walls of the holder.
Fixing the insert in the holder with the aid of the projecting tongues, which engage in the recesses in the holder, makes it possible to dispense with all other types of joining agents, especially adhesive, adhesive tape, staples or similar This then eliminates Doth the cost of these joining agents and the corresponding procedural steps. This results in a significant reduction in manufacturing costs.
Corrugated cardboard is a very inexpensive material Hence the holder can be made without base flaps, and therefore with less material, from a higher quality material which is a suitable base for a conventional printed advertisement, whilst the base, which is not visible when in use. is made of the cheaper material, i.e. corrugated cardboard Forming the base from corrugated cardboard with an essentially vertical fluting on the inside surfaces of the side flanges of the U-shaped insert makes it possible to use the fluting of the insert to guide and retain the panel-shaped articles in an upright position.
The term 'panel-shaped merchandise or objects' is to be understood here in a very broad sense, in particular, it is also intended to include goods of any shape in themselves, but which are presented on a panel-shaped base, i.e. in the form of a blister packing, as is the case for numerous small consumer articles, for which toothbrushes shall serve as an example here
The holder is preferably rectangular-shaped. In particular, the height of the side-walls is lower than that of the panel-shaped objects, so that the latter project upwards, making them clearly visible. In this case, too, the corrugated cardboard is sufficient to guide and support them in the upright position.
Naturally, the panel-shaped products or objects need additional protection in the holder whilst they are in storage or being transported. Hence the holder can, for example, be shrink-wrapped together with the merchandise, using a plastic film Alternatively, a slip-on cover can be used, which fits over the top of the holder and the packaged objects. It is particularly advantageous to design the holder with a cover element as a complete unit that can be separated at the required height along the side-walls, e.g. with a toar-open line or a perforation. When placed on the shelf in the shop, the holder can then be separated along this line and the cover element can be removed
Other advantageous features of the invention are disclosed in the sub-claims
Examples of preferred embodiments will be described below in more detail with reference to the enclosed drawings. Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the packaging and tales holder of the invention, indicating the cover element;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of an insert as it is disposed in the packaging and sales holder to form the base of the holder
A packaging and sales holder, referred to below as a holder, is designated in its entirety by reference numeral 10 In the example illustrated, it has a rectangular outline, from which two parallel side-walls 12,14 and two further parallel side-walls 16,18 disposed perpendicular to the latter extend upwards, which, viewed from the right of Fig. 1, form the back wall and the front wall. The first-mentioned side-wails 12, 14, which form the longer side-walls of the rectangular outline, fall in a slope or a curve from the higher back side-wall 16 down to the much lower front side-wall 18 It is intended that the front side-wall 18 faces the customer in the shop and, because of its lower height, gives as clear a view as possible of the packaged products.
The four side-walls 12.14,16,18 are preferably made from a one-piece blank and are joined up in the conventional manner at one of the four edges formed by the side-walls with an adhesive strip or similar. In contrast to conventional holders of this type there are no base flaps whatsoever. On the contrary, the base of the illustrated holder 10 is intended to be formed by an insert 20, which is shown separately in Fig. 2.
The insert 20 consists of a rectangular corrugated cardboard blank which is folded into a U-shaped cross-section along two parallel fold lines 22,24 and hence forms two lateral upwardly extending flanges 26,28 and a base surface 30 connecting the latter. In relation to the U-shaped cross-section, the fluting of the corrugated cardboard material lies on the inside of the insert 20, and, more particularly, in such a way that the direction of the fluting is essentially vertical, as shown in Fig. 1 and 2. The insert 20 is inserted in the holder 10 in such a way that the upwardly extending flanges 26,28 abut against the inside of the side-walls 12,14 of the holder 10 and the base surface 30 of the insert 20 lies along the plane of the floor of the holder 10 The base surface 30 thus forms the floor of the holder.
The insert 20 is held in place in the holder 10 in a vary simple manner in that projecting tongues 32.34.36.38 are contrived on the two longitudinal ends of the flanges 26.28 of the insert 20. When the insert 20 is positioned in the holder 10 these tongues 32,34,36,38 engage in corresponding recesses 40,42,44,46 in the corner portions of the holder 10, as shown in Fig 1. This creates a connection between the insert and the holder, which, in view of the fact that the holder will only be used once, is amply sufficient for accommodating relatively lightweight products it is not necessary to bond the insert 20 to the holder 10 and so the corresponding consumption of adhesive and associated, relatively costly procedure can be dispensed with No other joining processes, such as stapling, are required either
Fig. 1 shows (by way of indication only) a few panel-shaped, flat, rectangular objects, inserted in the holder 10 in an upright position These objects are designated as 48.50 and 52. As already mentioned, the objects may be panel- or disc-shaped, or they may be such as are displayed on a supporting box as is the case, for example, with blister packings or other product display constructions.
Fig. 1 also indicates a cover element 54 for the holder 10, which initially forms a one-piece unit with the holder 10 and, when opening the holder, can be torn off along perforated or tear-open lines along the top edges of the side-walls 12,14,16.16 and removed.
As indicated in Fig. 2, the tongues 32,34,36,38 can be sloped to recede from the bottom towards the top. This facilitates insertion into the holder from the underneath. whilst on the other hand, in this case the hook-shape of the tongues is amply sufficient to ensure that they rest in the recesses 40,42,44,46.
