Definitions

  • the present invention relates generally to battery cable clamps and more particularly to a modification to existing battery cable clamps which facilitates the breaking of corroded connections and the removal of battery cable clamps from the battery post.
  • the standard battery cable connector is a yoke-type structure.
  • the battery cable is connected to one end of the connector and the yoke portion of the connector is fitted over the battery post and clamped down onto the battery post by tightening a nut onto a bolt passing through the two ends of the yoke.
  • Applicant's battery cable clamp replaces the standard bolt and nut which pass through the ends of the clamp and are tightened to secure the clamp about the battery post with a bolt and attached handle, the connection between the bolt head and attached handle including a boss or camming structure which will significantly increase or decrease the clamping pressure of the bolt based on a small rotation of the handle.
  • the bolt connecting the two legs of the battery cable clamp can be tightened finger tight and the handle then rotated approximately a % of a turn to substantially increase the clamping pressure of the bolt.
  • the handle can be turned approximately -4 of a turn and a substantial decrease in the clamping pressure of the bolt will result because of the release of the boss against the underside of the head of the bolt.
  • Fig. 1 is a top view of the battery cable clamp and improved connect/disconnect device of the present invention.
  • Fig. 2 is a top view in partial cross section of the battery cable clamp.

  • the post section 12 has a battery post cavity 16 designed to fit over and mate with the battery post of a standard vehicle battery.
  • the post portion 12 of the clamp 10 includes legs 18, 18' which together form a yoke-shaped structure, creating between them the battery post cavity 16.
  • the legs 18, 18' have leg extensions 20, 20' formed on their ends opposite the cable section 14 of the clamp 10.
  • the leg extensions 20, 20' each have a hole therein and the holes are in registry, having a common axis.
  • the cable connectors 24 can be bolts passing through openings 25 in the cable section 14 of the clamp 10.
  • the bolts can be threaded and the holes 25 can be internally threaded so that the bolts can be tightened down against the battery cable by threading the bolt into the threaded opening in the cable section 14 of the clamp 10.
  • a nut can be provided to connect the bolt against the bottom of the cable section
  • the integral construction of the clamp 10, including the post section 12 and the cable section 14, allows power generated from the battery to be transferred through the battery post, through the post section 12 by virtue of the engagement of the legs 18, 18' with the battery post, onto the cable section 14 and eventually to the battery cables (not shown) which are connected to the clamp 10 by the connectors 24.
  • the power generated by the battery can be transmitted to the starter of a vehicle and when the ignition key is engaged, the power of the battery will turn the engine to start it. All of the features just described of a standard battery cable clamp are well known in the art.
  • the holes 22 in the legs 20, 20' will have a bolt passing through them and a nut screwed onto the end of the bolt and when the battery cable clamp is in place, the nut will be turned to apply clamping pressure against the leg extensions 20, 20' to tighten the leges 18, 18' about the battery post. Once the battery clamp is in this tightened position, it may remain in that static configuration for months or even years.
  • Applicant's improved connector for the battery cable clamp is installed by removing the standard nut and bolt connection and placing it with an elongated bolt 28.
  • the bolt 28 has a threaded end 30 and a head 32.
  • the U-shape clamp 38 is provided at the head end of the bolt.
  • the U- shaped clamp 38 has a base 40 and arms 42, 42' and a hole 44 in its base.
  • the bolt 28 passes through the hole 44 and the head 32 of the bolt fits within the channel between the arms 42, 42' of the U-shaped clamp 38.
  • the head 30 of the bolt 28 when looked at from the top is somewhat thin, flattened, and elongated.
  • the head 32 of the bolt 28 is somewhat larger than when viewed from the top and has an opening 46 passing through it.
  • the opening 46 is elongated having a length (running in the direction of the axis of the bolt 28) greater than its height (its height being defined as the portion of the opening running in a direction perpendicular to the axis of the bolt 28).
  • the handle 50 is attached to the head 32 of the bolt 28.
  • the handle 50 has at the end attached to the head 32 of the bolt 28 a saddle-type structure including flanges 54, 54' which straddle the U-shaped clamp 38.
  • Crank shaft 56 extends between the flanges 54, 54', passing through holes 58 in the arms 42, 42' of the U-shaped clamp 38 and the elongated hole 46 in the head 32 of bolt 28.
  • crank shaft 56 is fixedly attached to the flanges 54, 54' so that crank shaft 56 functions as a pivot point connection between the handle 50 and the U-shaped bracket 38; thus, as the handle 50 is rotated about that pivot point, the rigid connection between the crank shaft 56 and the flanges 54, 54' causes the crank shaft to also rotate.
  • the crank shaft 56 has a boss or cam 60 protruding from it so that when the handle is in the position shown in Fig. 3, the boss 60 will be rotated to the position as shown and pressed against the underside of the head 32 of the bolt 28. Since the crank shaft 56 rotates in holes 58 within the arms 42, 42' of the U-shaped clamp 38, the boss 60 pressing against the underside of the head 32 of the bolt 28 will cause the bolt 28 to move in the direction of the arrow 61 relative to the U-shaped bracket 38.
  • the U-shaped bracket 38 has base 40 that butts against the spacers 34, and the bolt 28 is free to move in the direction of the arrow 61 through the holes in the spacers and the hole 22 in the leg extensions 20, 20' of the clamp, and since the wing nut 48 is screwed onto the threaded end of the bolt 28, the movement of the bolt 28 in the direction of the arrow 61 will tighten the wing nut 48 against the assembly and clamp in rigid relationship the leg extensions 20, 20' about the lever 62 and cause the legs 18, 18' to clamp tightly about the battery post onto which the clamp is mounted.
  • the handle 50 can be twisted to the position shown in Figure 5, while the wing nut 48 is being held by the other hand, to try to break the corrosive connection of the wing nut 48 on the threaded end of the bolt 28 so that the wing nut can be loosened even further to make the disconnect easier.
  • the handle 50 can be rotated in the position shown in Fig. 7 and the pull 64 can be looped over the lever 62.
  • the handle 50 can be pulled in a clock- wise position (when viewed in the configuration as shown in Fig. 7) so that the lever 62 will act as a wedge to separate the leg extensions 20, 20' and break any corrosive joinder between the clamp and the battery post.
  • the entire system can be twisted about the battery post and loosened so that it can be removed.
  • the assembly Upon reassembly of the system to place the clamp onto either a new battery or a cleaned battery post, the assembly will be configured in the manner shown in Fig.
  • the wing nut 48 tightened to a hand-tight level and then the arm 50 will be rotated to the position shown in Fig. 3.
  • the boss 60 will rotate to the position shown in Fig. 3, applying pressure on the underside of the head 32 of the bolt 28, forcing the bolt 28 in the direction of the arrow 61 relative to the U-shaped bracket 38 and clamp the legs 18, 18' tightly about the battery post for a secure connection and future long term use.
