Definitions

  • This invention relates to a container.
  • a metal can having an end with a partial aperture such as a pouring aperture, and a method and apparatus for manufacture of such a can.
  • Three piece metal cans having a pouring aperture easy open end are commonly used for packaging liquid food products such as milk and fruit juice. It is not unusual for the product only partially to be consumed at a single time. A particular problem with this is that product is retained and dries out at the edge of the can end after use.
  • the manufacture of three piece cans comprises fixing a can end to each open end of a tubular can body.
  • the can body is generally cylindrical and each end includes a countersink with a raised and steep edge, extended by a seaming bead so as to be joined to the can body by seaming.
  • One of the ends of a three piece can is provided with some device for opening the end.
  • This opening device is usually of the easy open type, such as a ring pull which is fixed to the end inside a score line. A panel defined by this score line is removable by pulling the ring.
  • the opening device may comprise a cover which is heat sealed to the end over an aperture in the end.
  • product is dispensed from the can by tilting.
  • the can is then returned to an upright position and product accumulates around the countersink, close to the seaming bead. If the product has only been partially consumed, this deposit will solidify as it dries out.
  • the solidified product not only has an unpleasant colour but may also be regarded as suspicious or unhygienic.
  • a metal can end comprising: a central panel extending radially outwardly into a peripheral groove; means provided on a side of the end which, when fixed to a can body is external, for opening an aperture in the end; and a rim for fixing the end to a can body; characterised in that: the end is substantially externally concave; and the groove is an internal groove and is defined by an inverted countersink.
  • a metal can comprising a tubular body and the easy open can end described above.
  • the shape of the can end ensures that any liquid which remains on the surface of the end after pouring will drain back through the aperture rather than accumulating and drying out on the edge of the end.
  • the can end of the present invention has a concave shape, this would normally lead to difficulties when seaming to the can body.
  • the provision of an inverted countersink allows the can end to be centred with respect to the can body, whilst still ensuring that there is nowhere in which liquid product might be retained on the external surface of the can end after dispensing.
  • a further aspect of the present invention comprises a process of manufacturing a three piece metal can comprising a tubular body and first and second ends seamed to the body, one of the ends having means for opening an aperture in the end, the method comprising: forming a substantially externally concave end comprising a central panel which extends radially outwardly into a peripheral internal groove defined by an inverted countersink, and a rim adapted to be fixed to the tubular body; and fixing the end to the can body by engaging the peripheral groove to centre the end and the can body and to move the end towards the can body.
  • the can body preferably comprises a neck at the end to which the easy open end is attached.
  • This neck enables an end of smaller diameter to be fixed to the can body, thus reducing the cost of the thicker metal can end. Furthermore, the neck facilitates the process of manufacture of the can.
  • an apparatus for fixing a substantially externally concave can end to a tubular can body comprising a central panel which extends radially outwardly into a peripheral internal groove, and a rim adapted to be fixed to the can body
  • the apparatus comprising: an inner chuck capable of being inserted into the can body and contacting an inner wall of the can body; a crown projecting axially from the chuck and having a complementary shape to that of the peripheral groove, in order to engage the groove so as to centre the end with respect to the can body and to move the end towards the can body; and an external counter-chuck, aligned axially with the chuck for engaging the external surface of the peripheral groove.
  • the seaming is carried out by conventional means using an external seaming roll, the wall of the can body being supported by the inner chuck.

  • an end 11 is formed from a circular blank Ila of sheet metal (figure 1) .
  • the blank is provided with an inverted countersink 14, a concave central panel 13 and an outer curl 12 (figure 2) .
  • This shaping is quite different from the manufacture of known can ends in that there is no external steep walled countersink and in that the end has a shallow, substantially concave shape.
  • the end is comprised almost entirely of the externally concave panel 13 (here shown as dome shaped) .
  • the panel extends outwardly into ' a peripheral internal centring groove comprising the inverted countersink 14. This groove is situated between the end panel 13 and the edge 15 of the end, which terminates in curl 12.

  • the easy opening means comprises a conventional ring pull 20 fixed to the can end by a rivet 21 inside a score line 19.
  • the concave shape of the end enables the ring 20 to be accommodated without risk of snagging and subsequent accidental opening whilst maintaining stackability of the can ends .
  • the easy opening means 17a comprises a cover 22 which is heat sealed or otherwise fixed over an aperture 23 in the concave end.
  • the heat sealed cover 22 comprises a tab 25 which can be lifted to enable the cover to be peeled off the end for opening.
  • the can body 26 includes a neck 22 at one end, in the vicinity of circular edge 23. This edge 23 is adapted to be joined to the curl 12 of the end 11.
  • an assembling machine comprises a chuck 30 and a counter-chuck 32 aligned axially.
  • the chuck 30 is capable of being inserted into the can body as far as the edge 23 of the can body, in order to be in lateral contact with the inner wall of the can body.
  • This inner chuck 30 comprises a peripheral crown 34 which has a complementary shape to that of the countersink 14 of the can end, in order to centre the can end with respect to the can body and to move the end onto the can body.
  • the counter-chuck 32 is applied to the periphery of the end at the annular projection defined by internal groove 14.
  • the can body 26 is supported both radially and axially by the inner chuck 30 and the end 11 is held centred between the chuck 30 and the counter-chuck 32. With the can body and end held is this centred position, a seaming roll 35 is moved radially inwardly in conventional manner in order to seam the can end onto the can body.
  • a sealing compound of elastomeric material (not shown) is first deposited inside the end, close to the curled edge. This compound assists in ensuring the integrity of the seam in the assembled can.
  • the chuck 30 By providing a neck on the can body, the chuck 30 ia able to move easily axially within the can body.
  • the neck also makes the can body stackable.
