- Paraffin and stearin in powder form are the raw materials used in the candle industry for moulding candles and tea-warmers. It is known to melt paraffin in a melting pot at a temperature of 70 - 90°C (depending on the melting point of the paraffin used and on the process used by the manufacturer) .
- the molten paraffin or stearin is injected into a cooling space or a rotating cooling drum with great force.
- the injected paraffin is deposited in a form resembling sand grains (candle sand) on the container bottom.
- a colorant is added in the melting pot, coloured candle sand is obtained.
- the quality of this product is the same as that of the raw material (the paraffin being used) , taking into account the expected influence of the added colorant.
- the colorant coats the grain (candle sand) surface and provides an impression of coloured candle sand.
- a mechanical bond (mixing by force) is obtained, which bond will remain as long as the prevailing conditions force the materials to do so.
- the two materials (paraffin, colorant) are separated again upon liquefying.
- the addition of said pigments has a substantial adverse effect on the combustion characteristics of the raw material. This problem becomes visible when the final product is being used.
- the undissolved particles clog the taper (bad combustion) .

- the colouring particles will sink, resulting in the colorant remaining behind after the paraffin has been burnt (difficult to clean, waste, etc.).

- the diluted colorant solution is then uniformly sprayed over the candle sand whilst simultaneously stirring the candle sand.
- the same process may be used on granulated material. For example, blocks of (compressed) paraffin and several other paraffin products (in the candle industry) may be dipped in a solution containing a desired quantity of colorant.

Abstract
Pour obtenir de la paraffine ou de la stéarine colorée sous forme de poudre (sable de bougie), on doit colorer cette paraffine ou cette stéarine. Cette opération de coloration a été jusqu'à présent effectuée pendant la production du sable de bougie. Ce procédé a pour inconvénient que la machine utilisée pour cette opération doit être nettoyée chaque fois qu'une nouvelle couleur est utilisée. Cette invention propose un procédé pour colorer le sable de bougie sous forme de poudre dans un processus à froid.
