Definitions

  • the present invention relates to greaseproof and grease- resistant wrapping material having good printability.
  • Greaseproof and grease-resistant wrapping material for products which contain greases or fats for instance material used to wrap margarine, must be resistant to penetration by greases and fats.
  • Plastic film, metal film and greaseproof and grease-resistant paper fulfil these requirements.
  • the wrapping material will preferably also be gas-impermeable to the greatest possible extent, in order to prevent atmo ⁇ spheric oxygen from turning the fat rancid and also to provide a light barrier, since light also has a negative effect on fats and greases.
  • the wrapping material must also be attractive and have good printability, particularly when the material is to be used to wrap consumer products. This requirement often means that it must be possible to print the wrapping material with high qualitative printing methods, such as deep printing methods, which places high demands on the surface smoothness of the material.
  • the wrapping material must also have a stiffness which will enable it to be used in quick operating packaging machines.
  • Plastic film does not provide a sufficiently effective light barrier, or have sufficient stiffness and gas-imperviousness; metal film does not have sufficient stiffness at economically reasonable thicknesses; and greaseproof paper is normally relatively transparent and has poor printability.
  • laminates comprising two or more of these different materials are used at present, for instance an aluminium foil and paper laminate, or plastic coated paper. Although these laminates fulfil the aforesaid requirements, they are expensive to produce and also difficult to recycle. The ability to recycle such materials has a great and growing significance with regard to the novel concept of recycling packaging materials.
  • the object of the invention is to provide greaseproof and grease-resistant paper which eliminates or substantially reduces the aforesaid problems, by coating the greaseproof and grease-resistant paper with a layer which will impart to the paper an effective light barrier, good surface smooth ⁇ ness, high brightness and high opacity (low transparency), good printing ink absorption, and which will also improve the resistance of the paper to penetration by fat, grease and oils.
  • grease-resistant paper includes:
  • greaseproof paper here all types of grease- resistant papers that are comprised essentially of chemical pulp, where grease-resistance is brought about by beating the pulp.
  • vegetable parchment is meant a paper which has been treated with sulphuric acid
  • pergamyn paper is meant a supercalendered paper produced from heavily beaten pulp, essentially chemical pulp. All of these types of paper are included by the present invention and are hereinafter included in the designation greaseproof and grease-resistant paper(s).
  • the resistance of the paper to penetration oils and greases can also be achieved by treating paper with a surface tension modifying agent, for instance scotchban ® from 3M.
  • Such papers are not included by the invention, unless the treatment has been effected on one of the aforesaid types of paper.
  • Greaseproof and grease-resistant paper may be sized in a conventional way, using techniques well known to the person skilled in this art, in order to improve the imperviou ⁇ ness of the paper.
  • Surface sizing may include treatment with CMC (carboxymethyl cellulose), polyvinyl alcohol, starch or alginate or combinations thereof.
  • Greaseproof and grease-resistant paper may also be stock- sized with a hydrophobizing agent to improve the surface properties of the paper, preferably its water-repelling properties, with the aid of known techniques.

  • Greaseproof paper may also be surface-treated, by calendaring and/or by glazing.
  • Greaseproof and grease-resistant paper treated or untreated, for instance in accordance with the aforegoing, having weights per unit area within the range of 20 to 120 g/m 2 , preferably 30 to 80 g/m 2 and suitably 40 to 70 g/m 2 will preferably constitute the starting material which, in accordance with the present invention, is coated with a layer that contains pigment, binder, viscosity regulating agent, lubricant and dispersion medium.
