Definitions
- This invention relates to a sealing arrangement for sealing a dispenser containing a flowable product, to a dispenser provided with such a sealing arrangement and to a method of sealing the dispenser.
- Various flowable products such as adhesives and resins, are supplied to the user in a dispenser having a barrel or cartridge with an open charging end through which the product is introduced into the cartridge and a closed dispensing end provided with an openable nozzle through which the product is dispensed in use of the dispenser.
- a dispenser having a barrel or cartridge with an open charging end through which the product is introduced into the cartridge and a closed dispensing end provided with an openable nozzle through which the product is dispensed in use of the dispenser.
- a resilient sealing plug attached to the end of a plunger which is inserted into the cartridge and moved to bring the plug into contact with the resin whilst bleeding the trapped air from between the plug and the product.
- the nozzle In use of the dispenser, the nozzle is opened and the plunger is displaced in the cartridge to force the product out of the nozzle whilst maintaining the sealing action of the plug.
- Some products, such as adhesives, are supplied to the user in the form of two flowable components which are mixed together at the point of use, so as to react and form the desired end product.
- Such products may be supplied in dispensers having a pair of cartridges containing the respective components of the product each of which is sealed from the air in the manner described above.
- FIG. 1 of the accompanying drawings illustrates in perspective view an example of a known dispenser for dispensing two flowable resinous substances to be mixed at the point of use, such dispenser comprising a pair of cylindrical cartridges 20 which are rigidly connected together and each of which has an open end 21 for receiving a respective plunger 22 of a double plunger assembly 23 and a closed end formed with an openable nozzle 24.
- the pair of cartridges 20 are rigidly connected together to form a single unit and the plungers 22 of the plunger assembly 23 are rigidly connected together by a bridge 26 so as to be adapted to be depressed simultaneously into the respective cartridges 20 to force respective resinous materials contained in the cartridges out of the opened nozzles 24 of the cartridges 20 in use of the dispenser.
- Resin is loaded into the cartridges 20 in a factory or the like through the open ends 21 which receive the plungers 22 with the nozzles 24 sealed.
- the plungers 22 of the plunger assembly 23 are inserted into the cartridges 20. It is desirable for any air trapped in the cartridge 20 between the plunger 22 and the resin to be exhausted as the plunger is depressed into contact with the resin in the cartridges.
- longitudinal air passages are defined by projecting moulded strips 27 which are formed on the internal wall surface of the cartridges 20. The strips 27 serve to deform flexible plugs 28 carried at the free ends of the respective plungers 22 so that air can escape through the air passage between the plug and the internal wall of the cartridge. Because of this arrangement a cartridge 20 of known dispensers of this type can only be
- HEET RULE 26 loaded with a predetermined volume of the resinous substance, the volume being determined by the depth to which the strips 27 extend into the cartridge. If the volume of resin loaded into the cartridge 20 extends as far as the strips 27, then, when the plungers 22 are inserted into the cartridge, the resin will not be sealed in the cartridge in an air tight manner because the resulting air passages will allow air to penetrate to the resin. Thus, purpose-made dispensers need to be provided for each desired volume of resin to be held in the cartridges. Accordingly, a 5ml cartridge, a 10ml cartridge, a 15ml cartridge and a 25ml cartridge would all require different dispensers.
- the known dispenser requires the volume of resin to be loaded into the cartridge 20 to be accurately determined since, if less than the predetermined volume of resin is loaded into the cartridge, then not all of the air will be evacuated from the cartridge when the plunger assembly 23 is inserted into the cartridge as the air escape passage will, effectively, be too short.
- the present invention provides a sealing arrangement for sealing a dispenser having a cartridge with an open charging end through which a flowable product is introduced into the dispenser and a closed dispensing end provided with an openable nozzle through which the product is dispensed in use of the dispenser, which arrangement comprises a plug for insertion into the cartridge in sealing engagement with the wall of
- SUBSTITUTE SHEET (RULE 26 ⁇ the cartridge after a desired volume of the product has been introduced into the cartridge, and a plunger for insertion into the cartridge into abutment with the plug and for displacement in the cartridge to push the plug along the cartridge towards the product while allowing air trapped between the plug and the product to escape, through a bleed passage in the plug, the plunger carrying a stopper which moves into sealing engagement with the bleed passage of the plug to seal the plug when all air between the plug and the product has escaped through the bleed passage and movement of the plug is resisted by the flowable product.
- the invention provides a method of sealing a dispenser having a cartridge with an open charging end through which a flowable product is introduced into the dispenser and a closed dispensing end provided with an openable nozzle through which the product is dispensed in use of the dispenser, which method comprises: introducing a desired volume of the product into the cartridge, inserting a plug into the cartridge in sealing engagement with the wall of the cartridge, inserting a plunger into the cartridge into abutment with the plug, displacing the plunger in the cartridge to push the plug along the cartridge towards the product while allowing air trapped between the plug and the product to escape through a bleed passage in the plug, and urging the plunger against the stopper when the plug encounters the product and all air between the plug and the product has escaped through the bleed passage to bring a stopper carried by the plunger into sealing engagement with the bleed passage of the plug.
- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a known dispenser comprising a pair of cartridges and a plunger assembly, parts of the cartridges being shown in phantom;
- Figure 2 is a detail of an air passage strip formed on an internal wall surface of a cartridge such as the cartridge shown in the dispenser of Figure 1;
- Figure 3 is a side view of one end of a plunger and a cross-sectional view through a plug, the plunger end and the plug comprising a sealing arrangement embodying the present invention, the sealing arrangement being shown in an open abutting configuration;
- Figure 4 shows the sealing arrangement of Figure 3 in a closed and locked configuration.
- one embodiment of a sealing arrangement according to the present invention comprises a plug 1 and a plunger 2A having a plunger end 2 carrying a projecting stopper 3.
- the plug 1 is formed of resilient material, such as a plastics material, and comprises a circular concave plug surface 4 from the periphery of which a cylindrical wall 5 extends to define a cupular structure.
- An air bleed passage 6 is formed through the plug 1 at the centre of the plug surface , the passage 6 extending through a boss 7 which is formed at the centre of the plug and projects into the cupular structure.
- the air bleed passage 6 has three distinct regions, a first region 8 immediately adjacent the plug surface 4 being cylindrical and having a diameter in the order of 1mm. In a second region 9, the bore 6 widens to form a frusto-conical region. The second region 9 merges into a third region 10 which is cylindrical and has a diameter of approximately 3mm.
- the depth of the bore 6 from the plug surface 4 to the opening at the surface of the boss 7 is of the order of 3mm, each region 8, 9, 10 having a depth of the order of 1mm.
- the outer surface of the cylindrical wall 5 of the plug l is formed with two annular corrugations 11, 12 which are of substantially the same diameter as the internal diameter of a cartridge (not shown in Figures 3 and 4) in which the plug is to be fitted.
- the outer surface of the cylindrical wall 5 meets the plug surface 4 at an acute circular edge 13, the edge being effectively tapered and therefore being readily deformable.
- the diameter of the edge 11 is slightly greater than the internal diameter of the cartridge in which the plug 1 is to be inserted, such that the edge 13 sealingly engages the cartridge in an air tight manner.
- the inside surface of the cylindrical wall 5 is formed with a single annular projection or corrugation 14.
- the plunger end 2 comprises a circular platform 15 in which is formed a circumferential annular depression 16.
- the end surface 17 of the platform carries at its centre the projecting stopper 3.
- the stopper 3 is configured and dimensioned to fit snugly in the air bleed passage 6 of the plug 1 as shown in Figure 4.
- the stopper 3 is thus received in the air bleed passage 6, the internal annular corrugation 14 of the plug 1 is received in the external annular depression 16 of the plunger end 2, thus firmly retaining and locking the plug 1 on the plunger end 2.
- the stopper 3 fits in the air bleed passage 6 in an air tight manner so that, when the plug 1 is inserted in a cartridge of a dispenser and the plunger end 2 is driven into the plug 1, no air can pass through the plug 1 via the air bleed passage 6 or around the plug 1 because of the stopper 3 in the bore 6 and the sealing engagement of the acute edge 13 of the plug with the cartridge wall.
- the platform 15 has a chamfered circumferential edge 18 which extends from the annular depression 16 to the main surface of the platform 15.
- a resin is loaded into a cartridge to a desired level, a nozzle of the cartridge being sealed.
- the cartridge is oriented vertically with the nozzle lowermost.
- the plug 1 is inserted in the cartridge so that the plug surface 4 faces the resin in the cartridge.
- the plunger end 2 is placed behind the plug 1 such that the chamfered edge 18 abuts the annular projection 14. In this position, the stopper 3 is not yet engaged in the air bleed passage 6 and, indeed, there is an air gap such that air can pass freely through the passage
- resin may be loaded into a cartridge up to any desired volume without the provision of air passages of a particular length.
- a cartridge of the same size can be used for varying volumes such as 5ml, 10ml, 15ml or 25ml.
- the material chosen for the plug 1 and plunger end 2 can be selected to determine the resistance required.
- the co-operating resistance between the chamfered edge 18 and the projection 14 can be tailored accordingly.
