Definitions
- This invention relates to an accelerator for a motorcycle or motorbike that is more particularly to an accelerator having an improved braking effect and more easy to control in a stable driving position.
- a brake for a front wheel and an accelerator are arranged in a steering handle parallel to a steering shaft so that a driver may brake a font wheel and/or accelerate by gripping the handle or twisting the driver's wrists.
- supporting handling rods are attached in the left and the right sides of the steering shaft(not shown) in one piece as shown in Fig. 4, wherein the right handling rod(40) is provided with a lever for braking the front wheel(43) in the front thereof and a rotatable accelerating handle(42) fitted therein which may tighten or loosen an accelerating wire(41) so to accelerate or reduce speed correspondingly.
- the accelerating handle(42) is used for regulating the speed by turning forward or backward and also for a handle of the steering wheel ,i.e., a driver grips the steering handle with both hands for steering and turns the accelerating handle(42) with his/her right hand for regulating the speed while sitting on the seat.
- a driver pulls the braking lever(43) toward the seat while he/she put the palm of the hand on the accelerating lever(42) and the thumb on the braking lever(43) concurrently.
- the accelerating handle(42) is return to normal(idle state) by a resilient means incorporated in thereof so to operate an engine brake that is adapted for cooperation with a foot brake.
- the foot brake is connected with the clutch operated by a clutch lever arranged in the left supporting handling rod of the steering handle (not shown) so to brake the front wheel consequently.
- the accelerating handle(42) since the accelerating handle(42) must be maintained in an inward turned state (i.e., twisted state of one's wrist) and the applying force on the steering handle is relatively concentrated on the right handle, it is hard to operate the braking lever rapidly in the case of a sudden stop. Moreover, usually one tends to increase the strength of one's wrist in the case of emergency, so as to produce and an undesirable acceleration .
- first and second supporting members that are diagonally fastened to handling rods of a steering handle having a hanger for the thumb, and a turning control member that is rotatably fitted between the supporting members via bearings.
- the turning control member has a manipulating knob and a fitting hole which receives an accelerating wire that is connected to a throttle valve.
- the rate of rotation is controlled as the forefinger and the middle finger of the right hand press the manipulating knob to pull up the accelerating wire.
- FIG. 1 is a top section view of an accelerator according to the invention
- FIG. 2 is a side view of the Fig. 1
- FIGS. 3 is a front view of the turning control member according to the Fig. 1
- FIGS. 4 illustrates an accelerator/brake handle of the prior art. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
- Figs.1 and 2 show an illustrative embodiment of the present invention that comprises a turning control member(6) having bearings(3) arranged in the middle portion of a body(2) and a supporting piece(l) extended from one end.
- the turning control member(6) having a fitting hole(5) for an accelerating wire(4) in the opposite side of the supporting piece(l) is fitted to a handling rod(7). Wherein the accelerating wire is tightened or loosened according to the rotation of the assembly(6) so that the rate of rotation is controlled.
- a manipulating knob(8) is secured to the turning control member(6) in the predetermined angle and a strip(9) bent with an acute angle is fastened in an end of the supporting piece(l) via bolt(l ⁇ ).
- the end of the knob(8) having a semicircular cross section is fastened via the strip(9) and a supporting bolt(l 1) fixed perpendicular to the supporting piece(l) is arranged downstream of the knob(8) so that the knob(8) is stably arranged above the supporting bolt(l 1).
- the control member(6) is received in the first and the second supporting members(12,13) which are secured to the handling rod(7) of the handle in mutually diagonal direction, wherein a thumb hanger(23) is secured to the handling rod(7).
- the semicircular body(14) of the first supporting member(12) is vertically formed in one piece above a flange(15) having the same radius of curvature as the handling rod(7).
- Two supporting member(12) support both sides of the turning control member(6).
- a grip portion cap(22) is fitted into the flange(15).
- the second supporting member(13) comprises a depressed body(16) and flange(17) in both end thereof(16), wherein a hanger(20) is fastened to the end portion of the body(16).
- the fitting hole(5) is formed in the end portion of the wire guiding recess(18) that is formed helically inward to exactly pull the accelerating wire(4) along thereto corresponding to the turning angle of the turning control member(6).
- the end of the accelerating wire(4) is directly connected to an evaporator to control the rate of rotation.
- the wire(4) is also enclosed by a coating tube(19) that is fastened to the end of the second supporting member(13) by hanger(20).
- the accelerating wire(4) is tightened and then connected in the hole(5) so the wire(4) movement corresponds to the turning angle of the turning control member(6).
- the other end of the coating tube(19) is caught in the fitting hole(5) formed in the turning control member(6).
- the present accelerator is simply operated by fingers while a driver grips the steering handle, i.e., in the case of starting or accelerating, by putting the right thumb on the hanger(23) and then pressing down the manipulating knob(8) with the right forefinger and the right middle finger while the right hand grips the steering handle so that the turning control member(6) fixed in the knob(8) is rotated via the bearings(3). Accordingly, the accelerating wire(4) is pulled to open the throttle valve of the engine and increase the rate of rotation thereof to accelerate. On the contrary, in the case of detaching of the fingers from the manipulating knob(8), since the accelerating wire(4) is returned by a spring arranged in the side of the engine, the turning control member(6) is also returned to normal and consequently the engine is in idling.
- the braking lever(21) can be pulled immediately while the right hand grips the handle so that the braking lever(21) may be manipulated in a stable posture. Because the grip cap(22) of the right handle is secured to the handle, driving is also performed in a more stable posture compared with the prior art which has a rotatable grip portion. Furthermore, when driving long hours, fatigue of the right fingers can be reduced because the accelerator of the present invention allows a driver to press down the manipulating knob(8) with middle finger while the right thumb is set on the hanger(23) and the driver's right hand grips the steering handle concurrently. Accordingly, the accelerator of the preset invention permits manipulation for acceleration or decelaration while both hands securely grip the steering handle.
- the present invention increases the braking effect and fuel efficiency, and also allows the gears to be changed appropriately to reduce abrasion and increase durability concurrently. It is to be understood that while a specific embodiment of the invention has been shown and described in detail to illustrate application of the inventive principles, the invention is not limited thereto, for example, this invention may be adapted to the various kinds of automobiles having two wheels including a scooter and auto-cycle and the like.
