Definitions

  • the present invention relates to an improved unitary mounting arm and suspension assembly for use in dynamic storage devices and rigid disk drives. More specifically, the present invention is directed to a unitary one-piece mounting arm and suspension load beam which are etched out of the same sheet of material.
  • the following advantages are realized from the present improved unitary mounting arm and suspension assembly. The number of components required for the head suspension assembly as a whole is reduced. The number of process steps in fabricating the head suspension assembly is decreased through elimination of the need for welding a separate load beam to a separate mounting arm. The possibility of warpage to the head suspension assembly is prevented by eliminating the previously needed process of welding the load beam and the mounting arm together.
  • the one-piece unitary load beam and actuator arm mounting means may be formed from sheet stainless steel, generally by the process of etching.
  • the present invention provides an improved one-piece unitary load beam and actuator arm mounting means for attachment to the disk drive.
  • Figure 1 illustrates a prior art actuatory assembly using an individual mounting arm and load beam for use in a low profile head disk assembly.
  • Figure 2 illustrates a unitary one-piece load beam and mounting arm in accordance with the present invention with a shortened arm for use in a small form factor drive.
  • FIG. 1 illustrates a prior art swage technology head disk drive assembly 10 with an E- block type actuator 12.
  • the E-block 12 is typically cast or extruded and then the suspension contact area 14 of the projecting arms thereof is machined flat.
  • swage holes 16 are drilled, reamed or machined by electrical discharge.
  • head suspension assemblies (HSA) 18 are swaged to actuator arms 20. Notice that the ends of actuator arms 20 are between disks 26 such that each HSA 18 is sandwiched between its respective contact area 14 and the disk 26. This, along with the swage technology, limits the ability to reduce HDA height.
  • Unitary one-piece head suspension assembly 28 according to the present invention. illustrated in Figure 2, shows a read/write head supporting flexure portion 29 at a distal end of the assembly 28, a mounting arm portion 32 at a proximal end of the assembly 28, and a load beam portion 30 formed in one unitary piece with both the flexure portion 29 and the mounting arm portion 32.
  • the load beam portion 30 is of a shortened length (as compared to that illustrated in Figure 1) in order to be used in a small form factor drive system.
  • Unitary one-piece head suspension assembly 28 eliminates the need for a separate flexure, load beam and mounting arm, which must then be attached to each other before they can be attached to the actuator arm of the drive system (not shown) .
  • head suspension assemblies of the present invention are known as atrous suspension systems of the type described in U. S. Pats. Nos. 3,931,641 and 4,167,765. The disclosures of these two patents are specifically incorporated by reference into the present application to provide a detailed discussion of the structure and use of Watrous suspension systems and of disk drive systems in general.
  • a typical unitary one-piece head suspension assembly according to the present invention has a total overall length of between about 10 to 40 mm, a width at the proximal end of the radius cut-out region of between about 4 to 8 mm, and an inside diameter of the actuator bearing surface of between about 2 to 7 mm.
  • a preferred unitary one-piece head suspension assembly 28, as shown in Figure 2 has a total overall length of about 14 mm, a width at the proximal, end of the radius cut-out region of about 4 mm and an inside diameter of the actuator bearing surface of about 6 mm.
  • a unitary head suspension assembly formed according to these dimensions is ideal for use in small diameter disk drive applications, because of the desirability to keep the section between the actuator bearing surface and the radius cut-out region as short and stiff as possible.
  • the flexure portion may be formed with any conventional type of flexible arms and gimballing support structure
  • the load beam portion may be formed with any suitable types of stiffening rail structures, and with various types of load beam surface features designed to enhance pitch and roll stiffness properties.
