Definitions

  • This invention relates to the application of paints, especially of the emulsion type, to substrates.
  • aqueous emulsion-type paints in the form of so-called “solid emulsions", in which the paint is thixotropic and essentially form-stable at ordinary room temperatures but can be rendered sufficiently fluid for application purposes under conditions of applied shear or pressure.
  • Such paints are generally supplied in sealed trays or dishes and, the seal having been removed to expose the upper surface of the paint, a traditional paint roller applicator or a brush may be rolled or stroked across the surface to pick up a quantity of the paint for application to a substrate.
  • the rheology of the paint is such that at least the surface region of the paint in the tray is rendered sufficiently fluid to be transferred to the roller or brush and thence to the substrate, the applied paint film remaining fluid immediately after application to permit at least some flow-out of brush or roller marks to occur, the paint then re-setting pending cure to avoid runs and sags appearing in the applied film.
  • traditional emulsion paints as well as with "solid" emulsion, there is a tendency for peripheral splashing to occur, due mainly to liquid-form paint being radially discharged from the roller surface on rotation thereof; this problem is especially noticeable when using lambswool or other fibre rollers, the individual surface fibres generating a flicking action.
  • a further disadvantage with traditional paint roller applicators and brushes is that they are required to be washed out after use to prevent the paint accumulated therein from drying and hardening. Furthermore, traditional paints may require to be diluted with solvent or decanted from one container to another for use. Yet again, traditional emulsion paints are generally sold in relatively large volumes, often not less than 2.51, and it follows that it is frequently necessary for the user to purchase more paint than is required for immediate needs.
  • a body of paint of the solid emulsion type carried on an application support member, in which the paint is intrinsically substantially form-stable on the support member whereby to transmit application pressures from the member to a contact zone between the external surface of the paint body and a substrate, the external surface being rendered flowable at the contact zone.
  • the support member may be in the form of a cylinder which can receive the spindle of a paint application roller, and the body of paint may itself be cylindrical, whereby the paint body acts as a roller, or the support member may take the form of or include a handle whereby the member may be held in the hand for application of the paint to the substrate for example in the manner of a lipstick, particularly for touching in or for application to awkward corners.
  • paint of the solid emulsion type is meant, in this specification, paint which is similar in terms of its physical properties to "solid emulsions" supplied in trays, in that it is rendered sufficiently fluid under pressure or shear conditions for a film thereof to be applied to a substrate, but is to be distinguished from
  • solid emulsions in that it generally has a greater degree of form-stability at ambient temperatures and in the absence of pressure or shear forces.
  • Such paints may be formulated, in a simple embodiment, by adding to a standard thixotropic aqueous emulsion paint a quantity of a long-chain fatty acid or a salt thereof in the molten state and allowing the resulting composition to cool to solidification, preferably in a cylindrical mould thereby to provide paint in the form of a cartridge, having a physical form similar to lipstick.
  • the body of paint effectively becomes, at the time of application, the application medium in place of a brush or roller and the rheology of the paint should be such as to remain sufficiently form-stable throughout the body thereof to transmit application pressures without breaking down, while liquifying sufficiently at the contact zone to provide for the even application of a paint film of optimum thickness having regard to opacity, coverage and other factors known to those skilled in the art.
  • the body of paint may include, dispersed in and preferably throughout the solid matrix thereof, additives which in the applied film provide an enhanced decorative effect.
  • the body of paint may include discrete agglomerations or clumps of pigment of a different colour to the main body of paint, optionally dispersed in a vehicle which is incompatible or immiscible with the vehicle of the main body of paint, whereby in the applied film they appear as flecks or speckles.
  • the pigment may vary in colour and/or concentration throughout the body of paint, whereby the applied film alters in hue, shade or tint from one part of the substrate to another, to impart thereto a zoned effect or a marbled effect.
