Definitions
- This invention relates to the application of paints, especially of the emulsion type, to substrates.
- aqueous emulsion-type paints in the form of so-called “solid emulsions", in which the paint is thixotropic and essentially form-stable at ordinary room temperatures but can be rendered sufficiently fluid for application purposes under conditions of applied shear or pressure.
- Such paints are generally supplied in sealed trays or dishes and, the seal having been removed to expose the upper surface of the paint, a traditional paint roller applicator or a brush may be rolled or stroked across the surface to pick up a quantity of the paint for application to a substrate.
- the rheology of the paint is such that at least the surface region of the paint in the tray is rendered sufficiently fluid to be transferred to the roller or brush and thence to the substrate, the applied paint film remaining fluid immediately after application to permit at least some flow-out of brush or roller marks to occur, the paint then re-setting pending cure to avoid runs and sags appearing in the applied film.
- traditional emulsion paints as well as with "solid" emulsion, there is a tendency for peripheral splashing to occur, due mainly to liquid-form paint being radially discharged from the roller surface on rotation thereof; this problem is especially noticeable when using lambswool or other fibre rollers, the individual surface fibres generating a flicking action.
- a further disadvantage with traditional paint roller applicators and brushes is that they are required to be washed out after use to prevent the paint accumulated therein from drying and hardening. Furthermore, traditional paints may require to be diluted with solvent or decanted from one container to another for use. Yet again, traditional emulsion paints are generally sold in relatively large volumes, often not less than 2.51, and it follows that it is frequently necessary for the user to purchase more paint than is required for immediate needs.
- a body of paint of the solid emulsion type carried on an application support member, in which the paint is intrinsically substantially form-stable on the support member whereby to transmit application pressures from the member to a contact zone between the external surface of the paint body and a substrate, the external surface being rendered flowable at the contact zone.
- the support member may be in the form of a cylinder which can receive the spindle of a paint application roller, and the body of paint may itself be cylindrical, whereby the paint body acts as a roller, or the support member may take the form of or include a handle whereby the member may be held in the hand for application of the paint to the substrate for example in the manner of a lipstick, particularly for touching in or for application to awkward corners.
- paint of the solid emulsion type is meant, in this specification, paint which is similar in terms of its physical properties to "solid emulsions" supplied in trays, in that it is rendered sufficiently fluid under pressure or shear conditions for a film thereof to be applied to a substrate, but is to be distinguished from
- solid emulsions in that it generally has a greater degree of form-stability at ambient temperatures and in the absence of pressure or shear forces.
- Such paints may be formulated, in a simple embodiment, by adding to a standard thixotropic aqueous emulsion paint a quantity of a long-chain fatty acid or a salt thereof in the molten state and allowing the resulting composition to cool to solidification, preferably in a cylindrical mould thereby to provide paint in the form of a cartridge, having a physical form similar to lipstick.
- the body of paint effectively becomes, at the time of application, the application medium in place of a brush or roller and the rheology of the paint should be such as to remain sufficiently form-stable throughout the body thereof to transmit application pressures without breaking down, while liquifying sufficiently at the contact zone to provide for the even application of a paint film of optimum thickness having regard to opacity, coverage and other factors known to those skilled in the art.
- the body of paint may include, dispersed in and preferably throughout the solid matrix thereof, additives which in the applied film provide an enhanced decorative effect.
- the body of paint may include discrete agglomerations or clumps of pigment of a different colour to the main body of paint, optionally dispersed in a vehicle which is incompatible or immiscible with the vehicle of the main body of paint, whereby in the applied film they appear as flecks or speckles.
- the pigment may vary in colour and/or concentration throughout the body of paint, whereby the applied film alters in hue, shade or tint from one part of the substrate to another, to impart thereto a zoned effect or a marbled effect.
- dispersion agents or rheology-influencing additives may be incorporated in zones within the body of paint, whereby to alter the surface texture of the applied film in discrete areas or zones, or the body of paint may include shear- or pressure-resistant lumps or fibres which impart relief to the painted surface.
- the body of paint may be supplied as a cartridge sealed in a wrapper or container to maintain the paint usable until the seal is broken.
- the support member comprises a roller cylinder
- the body of paint is itself cylindrical and may be contained within a tube provided with a tear-off or frangible seal or an end cap, for example.
- the spindle of a conventional applicator roller may be inserted to withdraw the cylindrical paint body ready for use, optionally after removing a protective layer or film material the presence of which prevents contact and possible adhesion between the paint and the inner surface of the tube.
- the inner roller cylinder support is preferably provided with keying means on its outer surface, whereby to enhance the bonding between the support and the body of paint, to prevent relative movement therebetween causing liquifaction at the interfacial region between the support and the paint.
- the tube, seal and/or end cap may be formed from biodegradable or recyclable material.
- Packs may be provided which include a plurality of tubes all containing paint of the same colour whereby, on consumption of one cylinder of paint, the support member may be removed from the roller spindle and discarded and a fresh paint cylinder withdrawn from a tube by the roller spindle.
- single cylinders may be made available; a cylinder having similar dimensions as a conventional roller applicator (length 23 cm, diameter 6 cm, bore 2.5 cm) would contain in excess of 0.51 of paint, sufficient for an area to be decorated of modest proportions.
- Figure 1 illustrates a body of paint in the form of a cylinder which may be carried on the spindle of a roller-type paint applicator;
- Figure 2 shows a roller applicator being offered to a paint body cylinder containing a tube
- Figure 3 shows the spindle of the applicator within the paint cylinder
- Figure 4 shows the applicator withdrawn together with the cylindrical paint body.
- Figure 1 (a) shows a side elevation of a cylindrical paint cartridge having an external surface 1; the body is shown in longitudinal cross section in Figure 1 (b) and in end elevation in Figure 1 (c) .
- the paint body 2 is carried on a cylindrical former 3 which is sized to be carried on the spindle of a conventional roller-type paint applicator.
- the cylindrical paint body 2 is contained within a tube 4 in a pack which includes six such tubes joined by a connecting flange 5.
- the tubes and flange may be vacuum-formed.
- the tubes are sealed with a flexible sealing strip 6 which, in use, is merely peeled away to expose the end of the paint cylinder.
- the spindle 7 of a roller-type paint applicator 8 is then inserted in the central recess defined by the cylindrical former 3, and then withdrawn with the paint cylinder attached, as shown in Figure 4.
- the paint is then applied to a substrate surface, including profiled surfaces, in the usual manner, with slight application pressure to liquify the paint at the zone of contact between the cylinder and the substrate. Because of the rheology of the paint, the paint body remains substantially form-stable except at the zone of contact with the result that splashing from the periphery of the cylinder is substantially eliminated.
- the cylindrical former 3 is preferably disposable after use and may be formed from a water-impervious fibre material which will adequately grip the spindle of the paint applicator.
- Canadian Patent No. 889886 describes paints which are virtually solid at room temperatures but possess hidden thixotropy to enable them to exhibit, when stressed and fluidized, the desired application properties of normally fluid paint.
- the formulations disclosed therein may accordingly be used to provide paints for use in the present invention and the disclosure thereof is herein incorporated by reference.
