Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a door handle assembly and more particularly to a device for mountins door handles on doors.
  • a door handle assembly generally comprises a pair of handles disposed one to either side of the door and mounted on a handle shaft which extends through a circular hole in the door.
  • a latch is installed in the door so that its bolt extends from the outer edge of the door and can be retracted by rotation of the handle shaft.
  • Tne handle shaft is mounted on a pair of mounting disks which are fitted concentrically on either side of the door about the circular hole through which the handle shaft passes.
  • the pair of mounting disks may either be connected by clamp means which draw the disks toward each other or alternatively each disk may be screwed to the surface of the door surrounding the aperture.

  • the escutcheon plate is attached to its respective mounting disk by rotating the escutcheon plate onto the threaded boss of the mounting disk.
  • the escutcheon plate serves to conceal the mounting disk and provides a more aesthetic appearance for the door handle.
  • One problem in fitting escutcheon plates to door handles has been that with continued use of the handle the escutcheon plate loosens from its mount on the mounting disk. Although this is not a serious problem it can be quite annoying to the user.
  • One object of this invention is to reduce this problem.

  • the escutcheon plates 16 When the disk 28 and the latch 10 have been mounted to the door, the escutcheon plates 16 must be -mounted to their respective disks 28. This is done by simply rotating each of the escutcheon plates 16 onto the flange 34 of its respective mounting disk 28. As the escutcheon plate 16 is rotated onto the flange 34 and approaches the desired mounted relationship the internal surface 64 of the escutcheon plate 16 contacts against the ends 64 of the tongues 60. Continued rotation of the escutcheon plate 16 causes the ends 64 of the tongues 60 to bite into the inside surface 66 of the escutcheon plate 16. This contact between tongues 60 and the internal surface 66 eventually makes it very difficult to rotate the escutcheon plate 16 any further.

  • Each mounting disk 28 in addition to tongues 60 has a plurality of tabs 70.
  • Tabs 70 are formed integrally with the disk 28 and have a free end 72 pressed away from the surface 28a of the disk 28, in a direction opposite to that which tongues 60 are pressed. Tabs 70 extend in a substantially radial direction. Each adjacent tab 70 and tongue 60 pair define a recess 75. In the mounted position, the free ends 72 of the disk 28 engage against the wall of the handle shaft aperture . Alternatively, in doors where there is no large diameter handle shaft aperture and tabs 70 cannot enter the aperture, the tabs 70 can be deformed by engagement with the door face to allow the disks 2S to lie flat against the door face.
  • the previously described embodiment of the invention provides a simple and inexpensive way in which to ensure that the escutcheon plate 16 is not inadvertently loosened from the mounting disk 28.
