Definitions
- This invention is related to a device in vehicles comprising a chassis and one or more wheels arranged at the chassis.
- the vehicle is preferably a transport vehicle, in particular for more considerable loads.
- a preferred application for the vehicle is within the forestry, where the vehicle could be intended for transportation of forest products, for instance logs and timber and/or forestry machines, for instance machines for felling, delimbing, cutting, barking and/or chipping of trees.
- Such transport vehicles should have a good stability on one hand and be easily operable in the terrain on the other hand.
- the good stability aimed at in this connection is in lateral direction, that is the vehicle must have a reasonable tread gauge between the wheels so that the tendency to tipping with a maximum of vehicle load is within reasonable limits in practical operation.
- Such a good stability is particularly desirable within the forestry if the vehicle is to operate as a carrier for forestry machines, primarily so called one grip harvesters, where a tree processor is mounted in a crane arranged on the vehicle and a tree being subjected to processing in the processor is partly carried by the crane.
- the crane may have a very large range of reach and it, of course, is desirable to use this range of reach to a maximum, considerable tipping moments may occur when the crane is extended in the lateral direction of the vehicle.
- the desirable stability can not be obtained by increasing the tread gauge, that is increasing the distance between the wheels of the vehicle, since thi increases the requirement for width of drive ways in the forest; one aims at maintaining the drive way width at a minimum.
- the object of the present invention is to reduce the problems recited hereinabove and, accordingly, to provide a vehicle capable of uniting a good lateral stability with a good flexibi ⁇ lity on driving, that is a small width between the wheels.
- the device with means for lateral displacement of the vehicle wheels rela ⁇ tive to the chassis to change the tread gauge of the vehicle.
- the tread gauge of the vehicle may be reduced by means of the displacement means, whereas on the other hand the tread gauge is increased when a maximum of lateral stability is desired, for instance on work with machines carried by the vehicle.
- the displacement means for the wheels are formed by swinging arm arrangements (claim 2). It is suitable in this connection to form each swinging arm arrangement by an articulated quadrangle.
- the wheels are arranged on pivot arms, which are provided on the chassis to be pivotable in substantially vertical planes. It is then preferred that the swinging arm arrangements form parts of the pivot arms so that on pivoting of an individual pivot arm the associated swinging arm arrangement is intended to accompany said pivot arm.
- Fig 1 is a diagrammatical side view of a vehicle
- Fig 2 is an enlarged detail view illustrating a wheel of the vehicle and the suspension of the wheel.
- Fig 3 is a view similar to Fig 2 but illustrating the wheel adjusted into a different position
- Fig 4 is a perspective detail view illustrating the wheel sus ⁇ pension in the position according to Fig 3 (the wheel being, however, removed);
- Fig 5 is a partially cut view similar to Fig 2 of an alternative embodimen ;
- Fig 6 is a view similar to Fig 5 but illustrating a changed position
- Fig 7 is a view of that which in substance is illustrated in Fig 6 but in perspective and with the wheel removed.
- the land vehicle illustrated in Fig 1 comprises a chassis 1 and, in the embodiment, four wheels 2 arranged thereat.
- the chassis 1 may for instance be of the type comprising forward and rear chassis portions pivotably interconnected for steering purposes about a substantially vertical axis 3. It is to be emphasised that when the term "wheel” is used in th following, this term is intended to comprise so called bogi arrangements having two or more wheels and such arrangement where one or more wheels act supportingly and guidingly for drive track. An individual wheel of the vehicle could accordingl be replaced by a bogie or a track drive device.
- the vehicle is here intended to operate as a carrier for a working machine 4, which may be arranged on the vehicle by means of a crane as illustrated or any other suitable carrying arrange ⁇ ment.
- the machine 4 is in this case formed by a forestry machine, for instance a tree processor whereas the vehicle is a terrain vehicle suitable for propulsion in a forest.
- the vehicle comprises, in the embodiment, for each of the wheels 2 means 5 (Figs 2 and 3) for lateral displacement of the wheel 2 relative to the chassis 1 to change the tread gauge of the vehicle.
- the wheel appea ⁇ ring to the left in Fig 1 and its suspension is supposed to be illustrated substantially from above.
- the displacement means 5 allow the wheel 2 to be displaced laterally relative to the chassis 1 to considerable degree. It is understood that a sub ⁇ stantially improved lateral stability of the vehicle may be obtained if all the wheels thereof are located laterally dis ⁇ placed outwardly from the vehicle in correspondence to that which appears from Fig 3.
- the swingin arm arrangement 5 is swingable in planes substantially parallel to an axis 6 of rotation of the wheel.
- the swinging arm arrangement 5 comprises, with preference, a least two swinging arms 7, 8, which are swingably connected between the vehicle chassis 1 and wheel 2.
- the swinging ar arrangement 5 forms suitably an articulated quadrangle, the articulation axles of which closest to the chassis 1 are denoted 9, 10 and the articulation axles of which closest to the wheel 2 are denoted 11, 12.
- the arrangement 5 forms a parallelogram control, that is the wheel 2 will always be located in planes of rotation substantially parallel to the displacement direction of the vehicle independently of the angular position of the swinging arm arrangement 5.
- each of the wheels 2 of the vehicle is arranged on a pivot arm 13 pivotably arranged on the chassis 1 in substantially vertical planes, the pivot axis of said arm being denoted 14.
- power members 15 variable in length are suitably provided, for instance hydraulic cylinders, acting between the vehicle chassis 1 and the respective pivot arm.
- the vehicle obtains extraordinarily driving properties by mean of the pivot arms 13 and furthermore, the driver may by adequat adjustment of the pivoting positions of the different pivot arm adjust the position of the vehicle to for instance a horizonta one also when the terrain is sloping steeply.
- the swinging arm arrangement 5 forms a part of the pivot arm 13 such that the swinging arm arrangement 5 is adapted to accompany the pivot arm on pivoting thereof.
- the power member 15 acts between an attach ⁇ ment 16 on the vehicle chassis 1 and a support member 17 arranged for the wheel 2 at the extreme end of the pivot arm 13.
- the support member 17 comprises some suitable kind of means 18 for providing the wheel 2 on the support member.
- a drive motor suitably a hydraulic one, for rotating the wheel 2 may be incorporated into or arranged on the support member 17 or otherwise built into a hub for the wheel.
- the support member 17 comprises an attachment 19 for the connec ⁇ tion of the power member 15.
- the swinging arm arrangement 5 has the character of a connection incorporated into pivot arm 13 between a base member 20 of the pivot arm, said base member being the one which is pivotably associated to chassis 1 about the axis 14, and the wheel support member 17.
- the pivotal position of the pivot arm may be changed within wide limits.
- the power member 15 will also swing somewhat laterally which means that the power member 15 should be connected to the chassis 1 and support member 17 via not only hinge axles 21 parallel to the pivot axis 14 of the pivot arm but also further hinge arrangements 22 allowing the lateral swinging, for instance universal hinges of the ball type.
- a power member 23 is suitably arranged for swinging the swinging arm arrangement 5 and, accordingly, for the lateral displacement of the wheel.
- This power member could be formed by a power member variable in length acting between diagonally arranged articu ⁇ lation axles, for instance those denoted 9 and 12, in the swing ⁇ ing arm arrangement 5.
- the power member will then obtain a protected position within the swinging arm arrangement and this protected position will be even more accentuated if the swinging arms 7, 8 are designed as appears in Fig 4 for the swinging arm 8, namely with a laterally directed, substantially planar portion forming a screen between the power member 23 and the surrounding.
- the swinging arms comprise portions 25, which extend laterally relative to the wall portion 24 and which interact journalingly with the articulation axles 9-12.
- the wheel base of the vehicle is illustrated with the designation h in Fig 1 for the adjusted position of the pivot arms 13. If the driver pivots the pivot arms further downwardly to raise the vehicle, the wheel base measure h in the longitudinal direction of the vehicle is decreased, which means a reduction of stabi ⁇ lity, that is a reduction of the stability to tipping forward- ly/rearwardly.
- the pivot arm 13 illustrated therein is arranged variable in length. Thus, this means that the distance between the pivot axis 14 of the pivot arm and the axis 6 of the rotation of the wheel may be increased as far as the individual pivot arm is concerned. If such increase of the length of the pivot arm is carried out when the pivot arm is pivoted downwardly in order to raise the vehicle, the wheel base reduction previously described is coun ⁇ teracted.
- the pivot arm 13 is illustrated with its minimum length in Fig 5.
- the pivot arm 13 is illustrated with its swinging arm arrangement 5 in a position .swung for increased tread gauge and, furthermore, it is illustrated that the length of the pivot arm 13 has started to increase.
- Such length increase may for instance be made possible by designing the pivot arm to comprise at least two parts 26, 27 telescopi cally displacably coordinated with each other, a first part 26 o which is preferred to be designed integral with the previousl described base member 20 of the pivot arm, that is the membe which forms the pivot journal about axis 14.
- the second telescop part 27 comprises a connection portion 28, which forms one sid of the articulated quadrangle of the swinging arm arrangement and with which the articulation axles 9, 10 of the quadrangl engage.
- the parts 26 and 27 are, accordingly, tubular, for in stance with a polygonal or otherwise unround cross section, an form in unison an inner space, in which a power member 29 may be arranged. This power member is adapted to serve for the variation of length of the pivot arm and is intended to act between the telescope parts 26, 27.
