Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a tank for transporting liquids.
  • baffle design most commonly used in the art, insofar as is known to the Applicant, is a dish or bow shape. These dishes or bows are correspond to the shape of the tank, which is generally elliptical. It has been the Applicant's experience that this form of baffle has a number of drawbacks. Firstly, rather than retard liquid surges it merely converts the liquid surge into a less harmful circular current flow, in the nature of a whirlpool. This is evidenced by the continued motion of liquids within such tanks long after the transport vehicle has stopped.
  • baffles are subject to cracking at the point where they are fastened to the tank which, in the absence of appropriate maintenance, ultimately leads to the baffles becoming detached.
  • Related structural problems are common to such tanks, namely; the tanks become distorted and "sag" onto the frame of the transport vehicle.
  • a tank for transporting liquids which is comprised of an elongate container having a front, a back and sides which extend between the front and the back thereby defining an interior. At least one corrugated vertical baffle member is secured transversely between the sides within the interior of the container, thereby dividing the container into sections. Means is also provided for ingress and egress of liquids for the sections.
  • the Applicant has determined that numerous advantages can be obtained through the use of a tank for transporting liquids with corrugated baffles as described. Firstly, the corrugated baffles have a superior wave dampening ability as the liquid flow is directed back against itself in a counterflow which retards harmful liquid surges. Secondly, by positioning the corrugated baffles vertically they serve as internal structural reinforcement for the tank. It should be noted that corrugated steel has load bearing properties which are superior to steel plate, and far exceed the dish or bow shaped construction prevalent in the art.

  • SUBSTITUTE SHEET FIGURE 2 is a transverse section view of a preferred embodiment of the invention.
  • FIGURES 1 and 2 The preferred embodiment, a tank for transporting liquids generally referred to by reference numeral 10, will now be described with reference to FIGURES 1 and 2.
  • tank for transporting liquids 10 consists of an elongate container 12 having a front 14, a back 16 and sides 18 and 20.
  • sides 18 and 20 actually consist of one continuous side wall in the shape of an ellipse; they have been assigned different reference numerals solely for the purpose of this description.
  • Sides 18 and 20 extend between front 14 and back 16 and define an interior 22 of container 12.
  • two corrugated vertical baffle members 24 and 26 are secured transversely between sides 18 and 20 within interior 22 of container 12. The presence of baffle members 24 and 26 divides container 12 into sections 25, 27, and 29.
  • baffles 24 and 26 In order to function container 12 must have an inlet for ingress of liquids (not shown) and an outlet for egress of liquids (not shown) .
  • Communicating openings between sections 25, 27, and 29 through baffles 24 and 26 are not required, as each section can have separate means for ingress and egress of liquids.
  • the baffles By omitting communicating openings through baffles 24 and 26, the baffles function as dividers or intermediate bulkheads. This may be desirable depending upon the nature of the transport vehicle, and the nature of the liquid being transported and the number of openings into the container 12. In most applications, however, communication of liquid through the baffles is desirable.
  • baffle members 24 and 26 have openings 28, 30, and 32.
  • tank for transporting liquids 10 The use and operation of tank for transporting liquids 10 will now be described with reference to FIGURES 1 and 2.
  • Baffle members 24 and 26 are secured vertically within container 12 to serve as internal structural reinforcement. When liquids are transported in container 12, the liquids surge against baffle members 24 and 26. As the liquid current strikes the corrugations of baffle members 24 and 26, it is directed back against the flow in such a manner that the current is retarded.
  • the illustrated emboddLment has three openings 28, 30, and 32. Opening 28 is intended to assist in equalizing air pressure within container 12. Opening 30 is intended to allow fluids to be pumped out of container 12. Opening 32 is intended as a "crawl space” to allow internal inspection and repair of container 12. Openings 32 in baffles 24 and 26 are placed “out of register” to ensure that liquids cannot flow directly through.
  • corrugated baffles As is apparent by a review of FIGURE 1, these corrugations are wave-like or sinusoidal in nature. In proto-types which were constructed and operated with successful results the selected dimensions of the corrugations were as follows: a width of four inches measured from the top of one corrugation, designated by the reference numeral 34 to the top of an opposed corrugation designated by the reference numeral 36, this measurement being taken over a portion of corrugated baffle 24 the length of which was 12 inches.
  • the dimensions of the baffles will vary depending upon such factors as the dimensions of the tank, the number of baffles and the spacing of the baffles.
  • container 12 can be round, oval, square, or the like. It will also be apparent to one skilled in the art that the invention is applicable to any tank used for transporting liquids, regardless of the type of transport vehicle upon which container 12 is mounted. It will also be apparent to one
