Definitions
- TITLE "VENTILATOR FOR COOLING, WARMING OR FRESH AIR
- This invention relates to conditioning room air and in particular to an apparatus which is capable of creating a localized comfort zone at a desired spot such as where an occupant normally sits (not the whole room) .
- the invention will be referred to as room air control apparatus.
- the invention achieves its object in the provision of the room air control apparatus comprising: a housing; and a fan mounted in said housing to drive air through said housing; characterised in that the housing is provided with first, second and third openings; the first and second openings being disposed in the housing with the fan between them and the third opening; and at least one of the first and second openings being baffled or valved to control the amount of air flowing through that opening.
- FIG. 1 is a schematic of a room air control apparatus in accordance with the invention
- FIG. 2 is a sectional view of a particular embodiment of a room air control apparatus in accordance with the invention.
- FIG.3 is a schematic illustrating a particular way in which the invention might be used.
- FIG. 1 a room air control unit 10 which has the first top axial air opening 11, a second side radial air opening 12, and a third bottom axial air opening 13.
- the unit is attached to a top section 14 which may incorporate brackets (not shown) whereby the unit 10 may be removably mounted to a ceiling 15.
- the top section 14 may have a variable valve that can be regulated so that air can pass through top axial opening 11 at varying amounts from nothing to maximum.
- a main body part 46 is hung beneath top section 14 on supports 16 and 17 to hold the two rigidly, but spaced apart to create the second radial opening 12 therebetween.
- main body part 46 Within main body part 46 is mounted a sleeve 18 which is selectively movable vertically so as to close inlet 12 to varying degrees of openness. Supported within the main body part 46 is a fan 19 driven by a motor 20. Beneath main body part 46 there may be supported a heating unit 21 which may be used to effect heating of air that is driven out the third axial opening 13.
- the above ceiling space 48 to which unit 10 communicates may be connected to a source of fresh air, being vented to the outside 49, for example, or ducting may direct fresh air to the unit 10. Either arrangement will enable unit 10 to blow fresh air into a room below.
- a baffle or valve (not shown) may be fitted across top axial opening 11 to selectively cut down the amount of air passing through its top axial opening 11.
- Such a baffle or valve may be any of the standard forms such as rotatively mounted plates overlying one another around the opening 11 forming a hole at their sides at the middle of the opening 11 like the camera aperture whose turning can vary the size of the first axial opening 11.
- the source of fresh air may be closed off and room air collected at the second radial side opening 12 ( see FIG. 1) may be the only air that is blown out from the bottom axial opening 13.
- the position of sleeve 18 controls the amount of room air that the unit blows and this might be closed off with only fresh air being blown by the unit.
- sleeve 18 might be rotatively mounted across inlet 12 to selectively close inlet holes in a fixed cylindrical wall on the housing body so as to valve the air flow as set out in FIG. 2 (see below).
- a unit constructed as described above may be suspended from a ceiling using any of the standard fittings employed in suspended ceilings.
- the unit might be constructed for substitution with a standard ceiling panel or tile, and the unit might be moved about to suit users who could position the unit at the most useful point at which to create a down draft in case of cooling or an updraft in case of heating.
- the unit might be mounted above the ceiling, being in effect of turning the unit over with a duct connected at opening 13 leading down to the floor carrying warm air from the ceiling to be blown out at the floor level and let it rise up to the ceiling again.
- the fan rotation might be reversible so as to reverse the flow through the unit during warming mode in which a duct is connected from the side radial opening 12 to the floor and a small amount of room air can be expelled out through the top axial opening 11 creating negative pressure inside the room that draws fresh air from outside through openings like around doors and windows.
- the rapid exhaustion of room air can be achieved in this mode by turning the top axial opening fully open with the air inside the room blown out at high speed.
- the unit 10 can be mounted to a false ceiling at the opposite end i.e. at the third axial opening 13.
- a cooling mode the unit 10 can be mounted in this way outside the room at the false ceiling 52, a duct 50 (see FIG. 3) leading from the floor of the room is attached to the side opening 12 having a cooler 51 inside the duct.
- This way cooled air can be injected in the unit 10 via the side axial opening 12 mixing with fresh air entering the unit 10 via opening 11 and blown down to an occupant 53 in the room directly beneath the unit 10.
- Spent air can be collected at openings of a duct 54 at the floor and sucked back through opening 12 again.
- the rotation of fan can be reversed and warm air can be sucked into the unit 10 via bottom axial opening 13 and forced down the duct through a heater in place of the cooler in previous mode which is now replaced by a heater and the warm air leaves the duct at the floor level.
- the warm air in the room at the false ceiling around the unit can be sucked into the unit 10 via side radial opening 12 and forced through bottom opening 13 (now on top of the unit in inverted position) through a duct leading down to the floor passing through a heater.
- Another duct is needed to duct in the fresh air through the top axial opening (now at the bottom) into the unit.
- a venturi is needed at side radial opening 12 to suck in the cooled recycled air after passing through a cooler to blend the cooled air with the fresh air from bottom axial opening 13 (now on top) before forcing them through the top axial opening 11 (now at the bottom).
- Bracket 23 might be a surround into which body 32 may be inserted.
- the bracket 23 might have a standard ceiling panel or tile shape for substitution for a ceiling panel or tile.
- a fan 27 may be mounted in the unit, -driven by motor 28 which is supported on arm 29 to the main body part 32 in the usual manner. If the unit 22 is needed to be within a ceiling with the side radial opening 30 above the false ceiling, the bolts 31 are then loosened and the unit 22 is pushed up until a lower groove is in alignment with the bolts 31 where they are tightened to clamp the unit 22 firmly in place.
- the main body part 32 may be a cylinder with openings 30 in the side wall. Those openings may be closed by a complementary inner rotary sleeve 33 having holes 34 that on rotation of sleeve 33 may close or open complementary holes 30 in the main body part 32.
- the sleeve 33 might be turned by a means such as pulley 37 with arms 38 joining it coaxially with the sleeve 33 at its inner surface, so when the pulley 37 turns the sleeve 33 also turns.
- Pulley 37 may be turned automatically (not shown) or by drawing strings 39 with grips 40 and 41 at the ends passing over pulley 47.
- the top axial opening to the main body part might be closed by fitting a removable top opening 42 on top of it, which might be gradually opened automatically (not shown) or manually by drawstrings with grips 44 and 45 passed over the pulley 43. It will be seen that this unit provides the various inlets and outlets in many modes of operation as described in FIG. 1 and these may be closed or partially closed at the choice of the user in the same way.
- the unit of FIG. 2 may have its upper top opening 42 connected by ducting to a supply of fresh air. Whilst manual control of openings is described, it will be clear that other forms of valve operations are possible and these could be operated by remote means.
- the unit might be operated without the top axial opening 42.
- the radial side opening and the axial top opening may be baffled or valved by valves that are interlinked for joint operation, one becoming closed off as the other is opened up.
