Abstract

An apparatus for melting snow comprising a box-like structure (12) wherein a combustion chamber (18) communicating with the outside through an opening (25) is created. An injection assembly injects fuel in the combustion chamber, then an ignition assembly (33) ignites the fuel. A fan (28) supplies an air stream that is heated by the fuel's combustion and sent out to melt the snow. The apparatus can be constructed both as an independent unit or to be used assembled on a tractor.

Description

•APPARATUS FOR THE RAPID MELTING OF SNOW"
The removal of ice and snow from the roads represents a big problem during the winter period.
Nowadays the snow is piled in heaps that are left on the road until they are melted down by the sun or are collected on 5, trucks and sent to a dump. It is evident that this procedure is not satisfactory both because it largely involves manual work and does not obtain a good cleaning of the road surfaces; furthermore it is expensive.
An object of this invention is to achieve a fast and 10. efficacious removal of the snow heaps.
A further object is that of creating a means to allow this removal, such means being cheap and easy to use.
This invention relates to an apparatus comprising a combustion chamber, an outlet mouth, a fuel injection assembly, an ignition assembly, an air inlet assembly. The air inlet 5. assembly provides the combustion chamber with an air stream in which fuel, generally diesel oil, is injected by the injection assembly; subsequently the ignition assembly provides for the ignition of the fuel. In this way, a high temperature air and burnt gas stream is generated at the outlet mouth and can be 10. directed towards the snow to obtain melting thereof.
This apparatus is made to be preferably utilized together with a farm tractor thus utilizing its power takeoff, fuel system, electric and hydraulic system.
Obviously, the present apparatus could also be constructed as 15. an independent unit, within the scope of the invention .
The new apparatus allows the rapid removal of the snow heaps or of the diffused snow; furthermore it is of simple and economical use.
An actually preferred embodiment of the invention will be 20. described with reference to the enclosed drawings in which;
- figure 1 is .a side view of the apparatus on a reduced scale;
- figure 2 is a side view of the same apparatus with part of the housing or caisson removed; - figure 3 is a bottom view of the outlet tubular element;
- figure 4 is an interrupted perspective view of a frame supporting the fan and of the frame support;
- figure 5 is a perspective view of the injection pump.
5. With reference to the drawings an apparatus, complessively indicated with 10, comprises a box-like structure or caisson 12, generally made of metal plate. Structure 12 is internally divided by an insulated inside wall 14, thus forming a first chamber 16 and a second chamber 18 or combustion chamber. 10. Chamber 16 is open on one side.
A transverse tubular element 22 supported by means of welded plates 24 is fast with an end of caisson 12; the tubular element communicates with chamber 18 trough an opening and with the outside trough a longitudinal opening 25.
15. The intermediate wall 14 is provided with a central opening 19 having a support 20 around it; on this support an internally hollow frame or supporting structure 26 is fixed. The delivering mouth of a fan 28 housed in chamber 16 is applied and fixed on it.
20. Around headframe 26 a number of fuel injectors 30, connected to a fuel feeding line 32, are mounted.
Injectors 30 spray pressurized fuel into a defined space within the frame support 20 and therefore into combustion chamber 18. A number of ignition sparking plugs 33 are mounted on the frame support carried by an insulated support preferably made of alternated brass and asbestos plates.
A conical body 36 having its vertex in direction of the frame 5. is preferably mounted inside the combustion chamber by means of spaced radial arms 35; the conical body's function is that of substantially dividing uniformely the fuel's jet coming from the injectors.
The above mentioned apparatus, according to a preferred 10. embodiment, is provided externally on the caisson with connecting means as those indicated with 40 for connection to the front mechanical power lift device of a tractor. Said connecting means and the connection to the tractor will not be explained in particular since they are known. The apparatus 15, will be connected to the tractor's diesel oil fuel feeding system eventually utilizing a known type of injection pump 42 drawn schematically in figure 5; from the drawings it can be seen that the pump is operated from the tractor's power takeoff 48 through a belt 46, a pulley 45 and a coupling 44. In the 20. same way, the sparking plug's electric feeding system (not shown) is connected to the tractor's electric system and hasn't been represented in detail since it can be any sistem readily accessible to a technician of the field.
Fan 28 is operated by means of the tractor's hydraulic system 25. in a way that is known or is anyway accessible to a technician.
The operation of the apparatus is explained hereunder. Once the caisson has been mounted on the tractor and the necessary electric, mechanical and hydraulic connections have been made, the fan 28 provides a pressurized air stream; fuel is sent in the air stream by means of injectors 30 and this 5. fuel jet is ignited by sparking plugs 34. From the outlet 25 the apparatus discharges a high temperature air stream. By opportunely operating the tractor's power lift it is possible to incline the caisson directing the hot air in the desired direction.
