co vTRoL SYSTEIVL 5 Specification of Reissued Letters Patent.
reissue filed January 31,1919. Serial No. 274,375.
To all whomz't may concern: i
Be it known that we, KARL A. Summer, a citizen of the United States, anda resident of Edgewodd Park, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, and Hum) T. Mounts, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of WVilkinsbLu-g, in the county of i-kllegheny and'State of Pennsylvania, haye invented a new and useful Improvement 1n Control Systems, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention. relates to control systems for electric motors and particularly to systems for controlling motors that are adapted for use .in electric-railway and similar vehicles.
One ob ect of our invention-1s to provide a system, ofjthe above-indicated character,
wherein the-energizing circuit for plurality of electrically-gove-rned switches shall be positively broken at the instant the masterscontroller handle is moved a prede- ",termine d distance toward the off position.
will be hereinafter set forth.
Another object of our invention is to minimize the burning the contact members on an auxiliary segmentof the controller, as
' Heretofore, it has been the custom, in control systems embodying a slip-segment controller of a familiar type. to interrupt the energizing circuit for a plurality of electrieally-governed switches at the contact members on a,.frictiwally-engaged segment of the controller. It will be observed that the ln -err ptlon f an inductive circuit will cause an arc to be maintained between the cooperating contact members, ancLjthat a positive interruption of the energizing circuit, at the inst-ant the contact members are separated, cannot be made. The; are occasioned by the interruption of this inductive circuit causes burning cf the contact members;as will be unde stood.
According to our invention, we provide a system wherein av frictionally-engaged controller segment-is used to complete acireuit instead of to interrupt it. the energizing circuit of the motor-controlling switches is positively interrupted;
through the medium of a suitable relay, at theinst-ant the a predetermined olf position, and
controller-handle is moved slight degree toward the the burning of the contact In" this manner members on the friotionally-engaged con troller segment is minimized.
' the unit switches as the controller is moved through its successive forward positions. v Referrlng to Fig. v1 of the drawing, a.
Reissued Mar. 11, 1-919. Original No. 1,289,284, dated December 31,1918, Serial No. 59,833, filed November 5,1915. Application for supply-circuit conductor 1, receiving energy from any suitable source, (not shown) and aretnrn cn cuit conductor 2- are adapted to deliver energy to a plurality of electric mo- 1 tors 3 and 4:, respectively, havin armatures A1 and A2 and field windings F1 a'nd F2, through a line switch LS, a plurality of elect-rically-governed circuit-arranging switches M, G, l and S and a plurality of electricallyv controlled resistaiic'e-govcrning switches R1 and It) that are adapted to respectively short-circuit resistors 5 and 6.
The several switches R1, R2,
- and LS are llllIStl'l ted as being respectiyely operated by means of suitable electromagnets or actuating coils that are -corres )o1 1dmgly lettered 1n Flg. :2.
The several electromagnets 7, LS, M, S,
P, R1, R2 and G (Fig. 2) are energized from a suitable source, such as a battery 8, through circuits that are arrangetl and govef ned bya master controller 9 and by a pin 'ality of interlocking contact members that arerespectively marked LS in. R1 out, P
out, Gout and Sent. These interlocking contact members are of a well-known type and are adapted to assume an in?" or anout position according to the corresponding positions of their respective switches.
The master controller 5) comprises a. main rotatable drum l0 and an auxiliary disk 11.
Then'iain drum 10 isfproviided with a con ducting; segment 12, a suitable operating handle 13 and an upwardly projecting cylindrical portion 19 around which'the auxiliary disk 11 disposed. The'main conducting segment 12 is adapted. to cooperate with a plurality of stationary contact members 14-. 13. 16, 17'. and 1S.
