To all whom it may concern:
Be it knoivn that I. JOHN T. SToXEY, a citizen of the United States'residing at Cleveland. in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented nevv and use-' ful. Improvements in Holdingffachines. of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to machines for the making of molds and cores and provides a machine in yvhich the material from which the mold or core is made may be subjected 'to a jarring motion to compact it. and subthe specification,

Generally speaking. the invention comprises the elements and combinations thereof set forth in the accompanying claims.

A platform 1 is supported at its ends upon upright members 2 and which mayT as suine any desired shape. Upon the portion of the bracket 5. indicated at 9, an upright cylindrical meimber 10 is bolted or otherwise secured. This cylindrical member maywbe holloiv or solid. as desired. but in the drawings I have indicated it as hollow. For convenience I shall call the member 10 a piston. Surrounding the upright piston 10 is a cylinder' 11 which at the limits of the machine.

The uprights 17 and 18 extend through slots formed in the table7 the positioning and extent of the slots is indicated at 1Tn and 1Sa in Fig. '2. The bolts are but indicative of any suitable means to hold the uprights in position.
The uprights 1T and 18 may be moved toward and from the center of the machine. and. by proper adjustment. may be made to accommodate aflask of any Width ivithin T his adjustable feature provides vvl'iich. is particularly desirable in molding machine.
At their upper ends. the members 1T and 18 are provided vvith suitable trunnions upon which are pivotally mounted the members 21 and 22. which. as ivill be clear from Fig. 23, are rectangular plates. when the port rises beyond the top of the member 10, the air. Will exhaust through the port 33 and pipe 3l, allowing the cylin,
der 11, and the parts carried thereby to drop or return lo their initial position. As soon as this dropping'takes place, the port 33 will again beco-vered and the pressure with# in the members 10 and 11 will again raise the'clyimlerll and the parts carried thereby. This operation Iwill be rapidlj7 repeated and thereby impart to the n'iechanisn'i oarried by the cylinder 11 a .fibrating motion. 1f the valve is turned so as to close the pipe 3i, then as air is admitted throughthe pipe 231, the cylinder 11 and the parts carried therebyv ivillbe raised until suchtime as the valve 32de closed or the boss l2 contacts with the stop 14. The machine as "shown yin Fig. 1, is in proper position for jarring the mold or pattern box. That is to say, the plates Qland 22 rest upon the table 1,- and as the cylinder 11 is raised'and 10W- ered, these plates are raised from and Icon tact with the table l and thereby jar the .material within the mold or the pattern box.
- When it is desired to draw the pattern or the core, the mold or core box is raised, als suggested in Fig. 3 and is turned over to the position shown in Fig. 2. 'It is then lowered until the board 36 rests upon the table fl. or 'upon suitable device adapted to re ceive the board 36. Then the clamps 37 are removed and the flask or core box, as the fase may be, is elevated. This elevation is accomplished, as before stated, by admit-t ting air through the pipe 3]. and closing the' valve 35.' j
It-frequently. happens that the board 36k is not perfectly level, and thereore-ivouldnot rest squarely upon -the tabie'l. Inorder to provide for such contingenpy as this, lv may use the devices'sue'h as ,int'iea nerally at 38, Which'are adapted to rece ,v board 3G and to' a'.itomaticalljT equalize, as to support the opposite lends ot' the board. These devices consist of a base portion 39 which is provided with a ytongue 40. A slide 41 is provided with a groove complementary with respect to the tongue 40 so that vas the member 4l slides upon, the `member '40, it will be guided in its move-ments. .i At

Having thus described my invention, what l l claim is:
