DESIGN FOR A LAMP SHADE OR GLOBE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Design No.
31,356, dated August: a, 1899.
Application filed June 21, 1899. Serial No. 721,392. Term of patent 7 years.
To (all (Uh-0N1 it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ELIAS ll. ELLIOTT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Yonkers, in thecouniyof \Vestchester and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Design for aLanip-Shade, of which the following is a specification, reference being" had therein to the accompanying drawings,
This invention relates to a new, useful, and original shape or configuration of an article of manufacture known as a lamp shade or globe and a new and original ornament 0r impression to be placed on or molded in said lamp shade or globe.
Figure l is a. perspective View of e lamp shade or globe, (so called in the trade,) illustrating the design so far as it may be done by a line-drawing. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the wall of the shade on line 2 3, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the wall of the shade on any vertical line, as line 3 3, Fig. l.
The shade is composed of glass which will readily transmit light.
The general conton r of the shade is that of a hemisphere, as shown in the drawings.
The outer surface of the shade has horizontal prisms or, ribs projecting from the general surface of the glass, and the inner surface of the shade has vertical ribs, all the ribs being integral with the glass and being produced (as the shades are now constructed) by molding When the glass is in plastic condition. The ribs on the inner surface of the glass are visible through the transparent medium, and Without close examination might be supposed l i i to be on the outer surface of the glass. The
4 effect of the vertical and horizontal ribs and i l i l l i i prisms, wardly and the vertical ribs projecting in- 1 wardiy from the general thick ness invisible, while transmitting form substantially it that is, the shade appears translucent, al-
the horizontal ribs projecting outof the glass, gives to the glass the appearance of being made up of small individ ual crystals or beads arranged in regular horizontal and vertical rows.
A shade nntde of transparent glass properly ribbed in the manner described has the property of rendering objects within it practically in a diffused all the light falling upon though the glass is transparent-the refraction of the light-rays by the inclined surfaces preventing a direct transmission of such rays and giving an opalescent or iridescent appearance to the shade when seen from dilierent angles and under different lights. Such a shade when applied in proper manner to an artificial light of any kind is not only pleasing to the eye, but has the effect oi" softening the light, thereby rendering the light more pleasing also.
hat I claim is The design for a lamp shade or globe, as herein described and shown.
In testimony whereof I aflirr my signature in presence of two witnesses.
