have invented certain new and useful Iniprorements in Safety-Stirrins; and I do, declare the following to be a all, clear, and E exact description 0 the invention, such as j will enable others skilled in the art to which it a ipertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improved safety stirrup.
The object of the invention is to construct a simple and ellicicnt safety stirrup in which one or both side members will automatically open should a ruler fall from ltlS horse, and i 4 ribs 1' and 5 are spaced laterally from said thereby reliably protect him against being caught in the stirru and dragged.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arnmgt ment of parts as will be more fullv described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of this improved stirrup, with the members in normal position: F ig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section thereof; Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section; Fig. 4 is a vertical section of the casing with the toe piece in place. The inner faces of the upper ends of the members 4 and 5 are preferably provided with longitudinally extending ribs 4' and 4" and 5 and 5", respectively, which are arran ed on opposite sides of the lugs 11 and 12. The free ends of these lugs 11 and 12 are preferably beveled to facilitate their insertion within the casing in a manner hereinafter to be described.
The hanger section 1 comprises a plate having a strap 100 10 at its upper end and with its lower en extended to form a cen tral partition 17 in the casing 19, which carries the catch mechanism. This partition 17 is provided with a plurality of transrelselv spaced apertures as 20 through which catci pins as 21 and 22 carried by the toe piece 3 are adapted to operate. Atone side of this partition 17 is formed a. chamber 23 open at its opposite ends to receive lugs 11 and 12 of the foot supporting member. \Vhen the beveled ends of these lags are forced into said easini, they cause the pins 21 and 2-2 to spr'nig ackwardly until the apertures 13 in said lugsregister with and lock the lugs 11 and 12 securely within tents the free end of an 11 right plate 27 preferably made arc-shaped, as shown. The chamber 24 is provided at its opposite ends with flanges as 24* which lie in close contact with the adjacent. face of the partition 17 near its side edges, the edges of said plate and said flanges extending into the space between the ribs 4 and 5 and the lugs 11 and 12 of the members 4 and 5. Right angular flan es as 23 are formed on the end walls of c chamber 23 below and above the openings therein, and these flan 'es 23 abut against the ribs 4" and 5" of the members 4 and 5 when the parts are in operative position The outer wall of the chamber 23 is providcd with apertures as 31 which are designed to register with similar apertures as 14 in the lugs 11 and 12 to receive the screws as 15, which may be used for looking the side members of the stirrup against automatic separation.
If desired, one side member of the foot supporting section may be locked against opening by one of the screws 15, or both may be locked it so desired, or the screws may be dispensed with and both side members caused to spring automatically open when the toe piece 3 is moved laterally by the engagement of the rider's foot; therewith.
It, will be obvious that the plate 27, which is secured to the toe piece 3 and amends upwardly through a slit in the bottom of the chamber 24, being provided with the laterally extending stud 28 which operates through and is guided by an aperture in the outer wall of said chamber 24, will permit said too piece to be moved laterally in one direction by the en agement; of the rider's foot therewith and in the opposite direction by the coiled spring 29. The lateral movement of the too piece 3 produced by the engagement of the toe of th rider causes the stud 28 to be moved outwardly against the tension of "the spring 29, which forces the pins 21 and 22 out of engagement with the apertured lugs 11 and 12 of the sections 4 and 6 of the foot supporting mem- 65 her whereby said sections are forced apart by the action of the spring 9 and the foot support is thus quickly separated from the hanger and all danger of the rider being dragged is thereby prevented.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, roportion and the minor details of construction may he resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention, as defined in the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. A safety stirrup comprising a foot supporting member composed of lungcdly connected twin sections provided at their free ends with inwardly extending lateral aperturcd lugs, a hanger member having a lug receiving chamber and transversely movable spring actuated locking pins operable to normally en age the apertures in said lugs, means operable by the foot of the rider for disenga ing said pins from said lugs and means For forcing the lugs on said sections out of said chamber when disengaged from said pins.
2. A safety stirrup comprising a hanger member, two L-shapcd members having the free ends of their short arms hingcdly connected and their upper faces recessed, a plate pivotally mounted over said hinge connection, a. plate spring secured intermediatcly of its ends to the lower face of said plate with its ends engaged in said recesses, means for detachably connecting the free ends of said L-shapcd members to said hanger, and a trip member operable to release said connecting means.
3. A safety stirrup comprising a foot supporting member having laterally extending apestaucd lugs on the inner faces of its free ends, a hanger member having a casing with a central partition therein, a laterally movable toe piece having a plate extendin into one chamber of said casing, said plate eing provided with laterally spaced pins on one face slidablc through a erturcs in said partition, a laterally extcn ing stud on the other face of said late mounted to slide in an aperture in he outer wall of said casing chamber, and a coiled spring arrarged on said stud between said plate and said casing wall, said pins being operable to detachably engage said aperturcd lugs.
4. A safety stirrup com rising a foot supporting member compose ot' lnngedly connected twin sections provided at their free 1 ends with inwardly extending aperturcd lugs, a hanger mem er having a lag receiving casing, a laterally movable toe-p iece having a plate extending into said casing, said plate being provided with means for detaehably en 'aging said lugs, a laterally extending stud secured at one end to said plate and with its other end mounted to slide in an aperture in the outer wall of said easing, and a spring arranged to hold said stud normally within said casing.

A safety stirrup comprising a foot supporting member composed of hingedly connteted twin sections provided at their free ends with inwardly extending apertured lugs, a hanger member having :1 lug receiving casing with a vertical partition therein provided with a plurality of transversely spaced apertures arranged to register with the apertures in said lugs, a laterally movable toe-piece having an upright plate extending into said casing at one side of said partition, arms extending laterally from opposite edges of said plate in the same plane, a pin extending at right angles from one face of each of said arms in position to normally engage the apertures in said partition and lugs, and means for holding said pins normally in engagement with said apertures and operable by the toe-piece to release them.
