Description

T. r. PAYNE. SINK STRUCTURE. APPLICATION FILED JULY 21, 1910.
Patented-Apr. 11, 1911.
me NORRIS PET W':'%SSESv SINK STRUCTURE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 11, 1911.
Application filed July 21, 1910. Serial No. 573,092.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS F. PAYNE, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, a citizen of the United States, have invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Sink Structures, of which improvements the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in sink structures, and the object is a sink structure of simple construction and easy and secure application.
The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention.
Figure 1 shows in plan a sink embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is a view of the same structure in vertical section.
Referring to these drawings, 1 represents a fragment of the basin with its drain orifice. This may be the basin of a sink, a bath tub, or of any other such fixture. This drain orifice is surrounded by a downwardly extending annular flange 2 preferably continuous with the body of the basin and preferably tapered inwardly, as particularly illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The size of this escape orifice for the basin 1 with its flange 2 is such as to receive and surround, when brought to position, the upper end of a pipe 3, suitably formed for the purposes presently to be described, and definitely placed in the floor of a building or other place of installation. Fig. 2 shows this pipe provided with a trap 4, but this it will be understood is not an essential part of my present invention, and may or may not be employed, as circumstances dictate.
Cooperating with the basin orifice when applied upon the open end of the pipe 3, is a drain plate 5, provided with orifices through which water may drain ofi. This drain plate 5 is provided onits lower face with an annular rim or flange 6, so disposed and of such size that, when the parts are placed as is indicated in Fig. 2, this flange 6 will extend into the space between the upper end of the pipe 3 and the depending flange 2 of the basin portion; and this space, in consequence of the taper of the annular flange 2 referred to above, is a space downwardly contracting in width.
Means are provided for screwing the drain plate 5 to position upon the upper end of the pipe 3. Any preferred means for accomplishing this may be employed. In the drawings I have shown bosses 7 upon the upper rim of the pipe 3, with screw-threads tapped into them, and I provide the drain plate 5 with corresponding orifices for the reception of securing screws 8. This space be tween the annular flange 2 and the upper end of the pipe 3 contains a body of packing 9.
The assembling of the structure will readily be understood. The basin is brought to position with its flange 2 surrounding the upper end of the pipe 3, and there permanently secured in place. The packing body 9 is then applied to the space between the flange 2 and the pipe 3. The plate 5 is then applied and screwed to position. As it is screwed to position, the flange 6 bearing upon the body 9 of packing material, compresses the latter in the wedge-shaped or tapered space which it occupies, and so makes water-tight joint at that point.
It will be understood, from the foregoing description, that the structure embodying my improvement may be assembled from above, and this is a feature of substantial practical value.
I claim herein as my invention:
1. In a sink structure, the combination of a basin, a pipe, a drain plate, said drain plate applied and united to said pipe, and a body of packing compressed by the application of said drain plate to make tight joint between said basin and said pipe, substantially as described.
2. In a sink structure, the combination of a basin with a drain orifice, a pipe. a drain plate provided with a flange extending into the annular space between said basin and said pipe, and screw connection between said drain plate and said pipe, substantially as described.
8. In a sink structure, the combination of tachnient to the end of a pipe, substantially a basln provided with a draw orifice and an as described. 10 lnwardly tapered sleeve surroundlng sald In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set orifice, and a drain plate provided With an my hand. annular flange adapted when the parts are THOMAS F. PAY NE. assembled to he wlthin the said sleeve sur- Witnesses:
rounding the basin orifice, said drain plate ALICE A. TRILL, belng further provided with means for at- FRANCIS J. TOMASSON.
