Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM AVERY AND ALBERT FENTON, 0F REDDITCH, COUNTY 0F WOR- CESTER, ENGLAND, ASSIGN ORS TO WILLIAM AVERY.
IMPROVEMENT IN NEEDLE-CASES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 98,904, dated January 18, 1870.
To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Re it known that we, WILLIAM AvEEY and ALBERT FENToN, of Redditch, in the county of Worcester, in England, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Needle-Cases; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof,
which will enable others skilled in the art tomake and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this speciiication.
This invention relates to improvements in needle-cases, and it consists of an outer sheath, pocket, or case, inside of which are arranged two or more cases or pockets for needles, which are worked upward and partly out of the end of the outer case when required by Ineans of cranks or armsupon a small center, and having a thumb-bit projecting through, and workingin a curved slot in the outer case, one pocket being attached to each arm, and the arms so arranged that the motion of the thumb-bit simultaneously raises one pocket and depresses the other.
Figurel represents a side `elevation of our improved needle-case, showing the position when the pockets are down in the case and the latter covered. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, showing the cover of the case raised and one of the pockets elevated. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of two of the pockets and the centerarms and thumb-bit detached, and Fig. 4 is a top view with the cover of the outer case raised.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the outer case, made of sheet metal in any approved way, and open at one end with a hinged cap or cover, B. It may be of the proper form and dimensions to hold two, four, or more pockets, C, for needles, sliding into it the pivot, so that when the thumb-bit is turned in the slot one pocket will be raised and the other lowered.
We prefer to arrange these cases of suitable capacity for two pairs of pockets, placing twov sets of arms on the pin, with their respective thumb-bits projecting through the opposite sides of the case. provide cranks or double sets of arms, set perpendicular to each other, and work two pairs of pockets by one thumb-bit, the arms or cranks not being connected with the pockets, and acting on them as wipers or cams to raise them, and permitting them to fall back by gravity.y
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with a case, A, provided with slots G, of two or more pockets, C, arranged in pairs, and the vibrating arms or cranks E, provided with thumb-bits I, when the said arms and pockets are arranged together for operation, substantially as specified. l
The above specication of our invention, signed by us this 2d day of October, 1869.
