Description
UNITED: STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS C. VEILDON, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT lN THE MANUFACTURE OF WIGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 9,868, dated July 19, 1853.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THoMas G. WEiLDoN, of the city of Hartford, county of Hartford, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and usefulImprovement in the Making and Constructing WVigs, Toupees, and other Varities of Hair-Work, and I do hereby declare the following to be afull and exact description of the same.
The nature of my invention consists in the method of fastening and attaching the hair with a gluten to the frame-work, body, or network of wigs, toupees, bands, braids, curls, 850., or any other kind of hair-work now in use or that may be in use hereafter.
The attached samples inclosed (markedA B) are patterns of different kinds of hair-work, showing the method of fastening and attaching the same on my improved principle. The samples marked C D are patterns showing the method of fastening and attaching by the usual old and original way, by means of knots, loops, ties, weaving, sewing, 850.
The usual method of fastening the hair to the frame or net work has been by means of knots, loops, ties, weaving, or sewing, which, in many instances, causes uneven and irregularsurfaces, makingitunpleasant to the wearer and very difficult to fit neatly, also very liable to shrink into ridges and cause irritation. The
hair being knotted into the frame or net work, being passed through and tied nearly in the middle, the root of the hair is returned toward the point, which is unnatural, and causes a rough appearance and unpleasant feeling, also difficult to dress and always tangling.
The method that I claim as my invention and improvement is the use of a properly-prepared glutinous substance, impervious to the action of perspiration or dampness or the various changes of the atmosphere, either hot or cold. By this means I can fasten the hair more smoothly and evenly on the frame-work in any form or shape in a durable manner, making a neater and more compact fit, avoiding the uneven surfaces, the shrinking of the frame, the tangling of the hair, the irritation of the knots, ties, &c. This method is also valuable as to the economy of manufacturing.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The method of fastening and attaching the hair to wigs, toupees, or any other kind of hair-work by means of any kind of glutinous substance, in the manner and for the purpose substantially as herein set forth and described.
THOS. C. WEILDON.
