Patented Oct. 4, 1910.
Application filed December 13, 1909. Serial No. 582,759.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HENRY L. LEILIGH and JOHN P. BURGER, citizens of the United ()ur invention relates to sheet metal work.
ing machines, and particularly to machines for trimming and folding the edges of sheet metal or the like to adapt the interlocking of the edge of one sheet to the correspond I ingl fol ed edge of another sheet. T e object of our invention is the provision of a machine of this class which is simple, eiiioient and rapidin its operation, and automatically operative to act on a strip of sheet metal or the like to trim and form successive folds in an edge thereof, whereby to minimize the expense incident to the trimming and folding of metal strips andenhance the practicabilityand commercial.
value of machines of this nature.
A further object of our invention is'the provision in a machine of this class of means for automatically stamping each sheet operated on with any desired matter or information, thus obviating the necessity of a separate operation for such pur ose.
The invention is fully described in the following specification, and while in its broader aspect such invention is capable of embodiment in. numerous forms, a preferred embodiment of the same is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,-
.Figure 1 is aside elevation of the machine in its normal at rest position, with different internal parts shown in dotted lines. Figs. 2
.and'3 are rear andfront elevations, respeetively, of the same; .Fi'g. lis a top plan view of the same. Fig. 5 is a view of the cams showing their relative arrangement. Fig. 6 is a corner portion of a sheet of work after being trimmed. Figs. 7 and 8 are successive stages of the folding operation of the edge of a sheet, and Fig. 9 is a cross section .of portions of the work trimming, and clamping parts. Referring to the drawings, 1, 1 designate the two side standards of the machine frame,
folding which are braced by a frame part 2, and r1 idly connected near their I a' 'orizontal table plate or *part- 3 and forupper ends by wardly of such table plate by a knife-carrying table part 4. .Thl's latter table part has its upper surface in a commomplane with the table 3, and is shown in the present instance as resting for horizontal adjustment on ledges or shelves 5 formed on the inner sides of the standards, being held in adjusted position thereon by screws 6, which. Work thron h the t. le part. Ajknife 7 is adju stably fixed to the forward edge of the table part 4 by screws 8 and 9, the latter of which thread upwardly th'rou h a ledge 10 on the forward side of said tab e art and bear against the lower edge of the knife, see Fig. 3. f
The standards 1 at the ends of the table parts 3, 4 are continued above such parts and each is provided with vertical guide- -ways 11 and 12, in the former of which the ends of a cross-head13 are mounted for vertical reciprocatory movements. TA knife 14 is carried by this cross-head for coijperating with the lower fixed knife 7, on a .downstroke of the cross-head, to trim the interposed edge of a strip of work. Gagestops 15 for the work are carried by the cross-head 13 and project down in advance 7 of the table-part 4, as shownin Fig. 3. The
knife 14- is preferably set on an incline to have a more eiiioientaction. 16 designates a secondeross-head which'is disposed above theta-hie 3 and has its end mounted for vertical movements in the guide-ways 12'. This cross-head has its base transversely broadened to form a pressure foot adapted to cotiperate with the table 3 to clamp work thereto, and has a toe 17 whichtapers forwardly to a point, which when the foot isv lowered substantially registers with the forward edgeof' the table 3, as shown in Fig. 9. The cross-head0rclamping member 16 is normally held elevated by compression springs 18 and has its lowering or clamping movements actuated by mechanism hereinafter described. v
Disposed at the roar of the table 3 is a horizontal reciprocatory work holding table slots in the ledges and thread into 1.9, which has its surface in a plane with the table 3 and its ends mounted'for sliding movements in guide-Ways 20, mounted on the rear top portions of thestandards 1. A. U-frame 21 has its loop portion or cross bar disposed above the forward end of the table 19 and its arms extending rearwardly and pivoted as at 22, to cars rising from the table ends adjacent the rear edge thereof, see Figs. 1, 2 and 4. The forward .end of the frame 21 is normally held elevated above the table by the action of compressionsprings 23 disposed therebetween. Yieldingly carried at the underside .of the for- Ward end of the frame 21 is a pressure-foot 24, which has guide-pins 25 projecting upwardly therefrom through registering apertures in the cross-bar of. the frame, the lowering movements of Whichpins relative to the cross-bar are limited by cotter-pins 26, see l igs. 1 and 4. The foot 24 is held yield} ingly spaced from said crossbar by compmssi'on-sprhigs 27, Fig. 1. A boss 28 rises fronreach arm of the frame 21 and has its "top formedwith a cam, surface 29, with which a roller .30 carried at the end of a superposed arm 31 coacts.
The arms 31 are carried bya rock-shaft 32, which is disposed above the-frame 21 and has itsends jourthe ends of the table 19. this shaft, as hereinafter described, in a dinal ed in bearing standards 33 rising from on a'rocking of rection to throw the arms 31' forward, the coaction ofthe rollers 30 with the cam-surfaces 29 causes a lowering of the forward end of the frame 21 to cause the pressurefcot 24 to yieldingly cooperate with the -tablel9 to grip an interposed strip of work.

flat or raidal lines ofwhich radiate from the axis of thetrunnions 35. Thevmember 34 is so mounted that one of its flat or radial lines is normally vdisposed. in th e'plane of the tables 3, 4 and serves as the folding sur- .'face of such member, while its other radial in the frame standards above the shaft 36 line extends downwardly, as shown in F ig, 9. This shaft or folding member has its folding movements actuated by mechanism.
hereinafter described.
i .lvlounted transversely of the machinewi-th its BHdSJOHI'Im'lEd in the lower, po rtions. of
the frame standards 1 is a main drive-shaft 36, on one endof which without the frame is a belt-piilley-37. A shaft 38 is mounted parallel therewith and carries a loosepinion 39, which meshes with and is driven by, a
-smaller pinion 40 on. theshaft 36. Fixed to the shaft 38 at one side of the pinion 39 is a fixed collar 41 carrying a pin clutchmember 42, which is normally held out of I the headed end of the pin 42 to effect its release from the pinion hub at. they end of a completed revolutionof the shaft in a manner well known in the art. The shaft-38 also has a set of cams 43 and 44 on each end: thereof Without the standard 1, a cam 45 adjacent the inner side of each standard,
and a cam 46 intermediate said latter cams.-
The cams 43 are intended to. actuate the movements of the cross-head or work clam'ps ing' member'l6 and for this purpos'e'each acts on a roller 47 carried at the lower end of an associated. rod or pitman 48, which attaches at its upper end toast u'd- 49".pro-
'jecting from an end of the cross-head and has its lower end pivoted to the free end an arm 50, which pivotally projects from a stud 51 on the standard 1.
The cams 43 are adapted in the present instance to efl'ect a lowering of the member 16 to clamp the-work at substantially the end of a half rev'olutionof the shaft3$ and to maintain such member depresseduntil the remainder of the revolution ofthe shaft is nearly completed, except for a 1 slight raising movement during the period;
of jdep'iression due to the rollers-47 working into recessesor depressions a in the neutral or concentric surface 6 of the cams, for the purpose hereinafter described.
The camsv 44 are for the purpose of actu-fating the rocking movementsfof the rockshaft 32 to effect clampin and releasing" movements of the pressureoot 24; To this end said cams are-made pointed as shown and each acts" on a roller 52:. carried at an end of alever 53,'which is fulcrume'dlto. a
frame stud 54 and has its other-end-connected by a link or bar 55 to a crank-arm- 56 projecting from the rock sh-aft"32.-' It v is thus apparent that on a raising of the roller ends of the lever 53 by the coaction of'the cams 44 therewith, which is timed to take place at the beginnin' of a revolutioniof" .the shaft 38, therock-s aft 32 willbe' rocked to throw the rollers 30, carried by the emis: 31, into position toefiect a clampingI aetion'-'-"= of the U-frame 21, andhold theiwork to the tab e 19.
ressure-ifoot Toggle Jinks- :57, 57 connectthe framestuds 51 with-the rear end-portiohsof the: levers 53 at each'sideof the machineyand',
one ofeach set carries a roller 58 atits'inner end, which, on a clamping movement of'theassociated lever 53, is thrown forwardvinto' the path of movement of the pointed end of the cam 4.4 .inposition to be'enga'ged .by such cam when near'the' completion of, its:
revolution. This engagemei'it of the cams 14 with the rollers 58 of the to gle sets efi'ects a straightening movement ot the'toggles and a consequent positive releasing movement of the clamping parts, as is ap parent.
The cams/t5 are intended to control the rearward reciprocatory movements of the work-holding table 19 through the medium of the vertical rock-arms 59, carried loosely at opposite end portions of a shaft 60, connecting the frame standards, and the links or bars (31, which wnnect the upper ends of said arms with lugs 2 projecting from the under side of the table 19, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. A roller 63 is carried at the forward side of each arm 59 and c'oacts with the associated cam. Each cam L5 is formed with the cam surfaces 0, d and the two intermediate neutral surfaces 6, 7', which arein' concentric planes, with the former more remote fromthe cam axis, whereby movements are imparted to the table 19 as jao hereinafter fully described. Theforward unovements of the table 19 are caused by verticallydisposed arm 68, mounted loosely on the shaft 60 ,whereby to rock said arm at predetermined intervals to impart rocking movements to a rocksshaft 69 through the medium of a linlr or bar 70,-attached to the free end of-said arm, and a rock-arm 71 on the shaft 69, as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3. The shaft 6.9 is journaled in the frame standards and above the plane of the. shaft 38 andcarries an arm 72; at each end'without said 'standards. The arms. 72 extend upwardly from the shaft and ea'chterminates at its upper end in a toothed segment 73 which meshes with a pinion. 74: carried at the outer.
' end of the adjacent trunnion 35 of the folding member 34. The cam L6 is formed on 'one si de.thereof with the two radial projectlons g and h, which, on a revolution of [such cam, acton the rock-arm ()8 to impart successive rocking movements to the folding' member 34 to first form the initial fold int the edge of a strip of work A and then to form the second or successive fold j therein, as shown'in Figs. 7 and 8. As the first fold i is pressed more closely to the plane of the work-strip than the subsequent fold j lone toefi'e'ct'a and consequent greater degree of rocking of as shown, the projection g is slightly longer than the projection h of the cam to adapt greater throw of the arm 68,
.lhe folding member 34:, than the other. The
Projecting downwardly from'the ends of the cross-head 13 at the sides of the machine frame are rods 76, which carry straps 77 at their lower ends for encirclin eccentries 78 on the ends of a snbjacent's aft 79. This shaft is journaled in the frame standards and carries a loose pinion 80 in mesh with the pinion 39 on the shaft 38, and also carries a single-revolution type of clutch mechanism -'81 of similar construction to the clutch 4142 on the shaft 38 whereby on a release of the clutch member thereof the revolution to t e shaft 7 9 ends consequent down and up-strokeof the cross-head .13. The release member 42, which controls the actions of the clutchpin 42, is of T-form with one arm coacting with the clutch 41- pinion 80 is en aged to communicate a single 42, as previously described, and its other arm coacting in a similar manner with the pin 82 of the clutch mechanism 81,,whereby'a raising of such release member efiects a simultaneous release of both clutches to engage their respective pinions.
' The member 42 is attached to the upper end of a'rod 83 ,-'which is guided for vertical movements'by'a standard 84, see Figs.
2 and 3, and is normally. held in lowered position by a compression-spring 85, which encircles saidrod and has its ends thrust against a shoulder 86' on such rod and a.
part of the guide standard 84, Thelo'wer end of the rod 83 bears on an arm 87 pro jecting horizontally from a rock-shaft 88,
which is journaled in the lower portion of one of the standards 1 and a bearing-block 89, and has a fo'ot treadle 9O pro3ecting therefrom in opposition to the arm'87.
91 designates a brake-strap which con- 'nects and encircles brake-disks (not shown) mounted on the shafts 88 and'79, thus tending to stop the rotation of such shafts on a release of the clutch mechanisms 4=1.42 and 81 from the respective pinions' 37 and 80, I
Mounted beneath the table 3 in one. frame standard 1 and a" pedestal bearing 92 .is a shaft 93, whichjcarries a pinion 94 in mesh with a smaller Figs. 2 and 3., The shaft 93 also carries a cam 96 on which a roller 97 carried at the lower end of a die-block 98 rides. The die.

.clampin member 16 until stopped by contact with the gages carried by the crosshead' 13. The operator then depresses the treadle 90 to raise the clutch controlling member 42- to effect a simultaneous release of the clutch-pins of both clutches 41-42 and S182 to permit such pins to move into engagement with therespective pinions 39 land 80 whereby to rotate the shafts 38 and .79 with such pinions. As the pinio'ns 39 and Y80 are in proportion of two to one and the pinion 39 serves as the drive, it is apparent that the pinion 80 will have acomplete revolution imparted thereto, 1 whereby to-lower and raise the c'rosTs-head'l3 to trim the'forward edge of the work, while the pinion 39 is making a half turn. diatelynpon the commencement of a single rotation of the shaft 38, or substantially so,
and prior to the trimming operation, thecams 44 at the ends thereof. act on the rollers 52 carried at the ends of'the levers 53 to effect movements of such levers in the proper direction to lower the bars or links 55 and rock .the shaft '32 to impart a lowering or clamping movement to the forward end of the U-fram'e 21 and pressure-foot 24 carried thereby, whereby to cooperate with the table 19 to firmly grip the work. Upon a trimming of the edge of the work which takes place at approximately the" completion of a quarter revolution of the shaft 38", thecam surfaces "0 of the two cams 45move into contact with the rollers '63 of the arms and effect a movement of the-\vork-holding table -19 to the limit .of its rearward movement through the medium of the links or bars 61, which position the" table maintains for a predetermined length of'time by reason of said rollers operating-on theneut ra-l surfaces of the cams 45. The-rearward movement of the table 19,'which is'thus efi'ected, is sufii cient to Withdraw'the work A from'the' trimming parts until its trimmed edge projects a desired distance'be'yon'd' thenose 17 of the" clamping member 16 for the formation of the fold .2 therein. Atthispoint the'cycl'e' of operations'the'cams'43 act on thej'rollers .47 to lower the "rods '48. and attached clamping" member--16 to clamp thework to the" table? immediatelytothe'rear'qf thef old' ring member-"34. As-the roller on the; rock-arm- 68 passes: over the arm 9 of the cam '46 it drops into a. depression 7' of such cam to permit the return of the E(-ld iugmiember 34- to its'noriual position under the influence .of the springs 75.
Immeneous'with such action the claniping meniber 16 instantaneously released from the work and again lowered into clamping engagement therewith due to the r0 lers' 47 at the ends of the rods 48 working. to the re ccsses a in the neutral surfaces 7) the cams 4-3. the clamping member 16 from the work, the rollers 68, carried by the arms "59 of the mechanism controlling the movements of the table 19, drop to the neutral surfaces 7 of the cams 45 thus permitting the forward move-- ment of the table; 19 under the influence of the springs 5 and effecting a forward move.-
m'ent of the work relative to the folding parts. This movement is so regulated that a sufficient length of the work is projected beyond the toe of the clamping member 16 to provide for the subsequent orsecond fold j therein. The folding member 34 is now oscillated to form the fold j in the work due to the second arm it of the cam 46 coacting with the roller carried by the arm 68 of the mechanism .for operating the folding men'iber. The degree of movement, however,
of the member 34 in the forming of this latter fold is not so great as themoveinent thereof during the forming of the first fold, due -to the arm 71- being shorter than the arm 9, thereby imparting a fold to the work; as shown in Fig. 8 Upon thecompletion of this fold, the cams 43 have moved to a point to permit afireleaseof the clamping member 16, the cams 45 then release the mechanism actuating the rearward movements of the table 19 to permit such t-able,

the cam 44 then strikes the rollers 58 carried by the toggle 'links'57 to effect a partial straightening of such'links and a consequent positive releasing movement of the rollers movement of such frame under the influence '.of the springs 23 is i permitted. the parts being in the position in which they. were before 'theftrea'dle 90 was depressed and permit-tinge withdrawal of the folded .work
therefrom and the insertion of either the opposite end of such Work sheet orthe end of another sheetto be acted At a predeterminedp'ointin of operations orwhen the member 16 is lowered in .c -.lampin position, the cam 96 carried by the shaft 93 acts on fthe' roller 97 at the lower end of the die block 98 to effect at raising of such die to stamp the'name' ofthebomp'any putting out the work, or any other "desired information, on the Worksheet, such die acting in opposition to the clamping memher 16 in such stamping operation. In the present instance, the cam 96 is adapted to Simultatact on the die at each second cycle of opera pintions of the machine due to the driving .rlven ion 95 being one-half the size of the pinion 94 on the shaft 93. This is done to back to folding position, clamp the same insuch position, form the initial fold therein, then release the sheet and move it forward in position for the next fold, after which the final fold is made and the parts then returned to their normal positions, leaving the folded work in condition to be removed from the machine and replaced by another piece of work to be operated on. These different operations being entirely automatic and following one another in rapid succession )rovides a machine, which, with the .attenc ance of a single operator performs the .work for which it has heretofore been necessary to employ several workmen and very materially increases the output due to the rapid operation of the same.
