FUNNEL.
To ollwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLAUDE J. Sources, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Three Rivers, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improve ments in Funnels, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to funnels and has for itsobject to provide a new and improved ineansfor automatically closing the discharge thereof when the liquid within the receptacle being filled rises to a predetermined height, and consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts .as more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawingsFigure l is a sectional perspective view of a funnel embodying my invention; and Fig. 2 is a modification thereof.
The funnel A comprises the usual inverted cone-shaped body B and the discharge nozzle C extending from the'small end thereof. Positioned within the body, in close proximity to the junction of the same and the discharge nozzle, is a transverse partition D which is provided with an. aperture E, and Fis a valve, preferably of the ball type, controlling said aperture; the partition being adapted in the closed position of.
the valve to cut olf communication between the portion of the body above the partition and the discharge nozzle.
G is a float for automatically closing the valve when the liquid within the vessel being filled rises to a predetermined level and,
in order that the liquid discharging from the funnel nozzle will not affect the operation of the float, the latteris positioned out of the path of the funnel discharge. Thus, as; shown, the float G is preferably made cylindrical and loosely sleeved upon the extension of the nozzle, the latter thereby serving as a guide rod for the float.

M and N are vertically-alining apertures formed ln the, transverse partition and the body portion of the funnel, and O is an open-ended tube forming a guide for the rod- H, and having its upper end positioned slightly below the plane of the funnel top. The lower end of this tube extends through the aperture in the transverse partition and is secured to the funnel body with the bore of the tube in alinement with the aperture N. The joints between the tube 0 and the transverse partition and the tube body are sealed as by soldering, so as to prevent the liquid within the funnel from leaking through the apertures M N. Surrounding the float and secured to the contracted portion of the funnel hody'is a cylindrical casing Q, forming a guard for the float. In or der that the-lower end of the casing will not be hermetically sealed by the liquid within the vessel being filled, and thereby prevent the raising of the float, a vent is formed the casing, preferably by slitting the latter longitudinally, as at R.
S are lugs secured to the lower end of the guard for limiting the downward movement of the float. As the length of the necks of cans, bottles, and other receptacles vary, a 7
ring R is adjustably secured upon the casing Q and is adapted, when the funnel is in use, to rest upon the neck of the receptacle.
S is a clampingscrcw for securing the ring in its different positions of adjustment. If desired, a handle, as T, may be secured to one end of the lever K for raising or lowering the valve.
The valve and float are made substantially the same in-weight, so that when the valve is moved toward or from its seat, the balanced connections between said members will'retain the valve in its adjusted position.
In use, the funnel nozzle is inserted within the neck of the receptacle to be filled, such as the bottle U, and the ring R adjusted to permit the nozzle to project within the b0ttle the desired distance. The operator then moves the valve from its seat by pressing the handle T downward and fills the rcceptacle in the usual manner. When the liquid within the receptacle rises suthcicntly to raise the float, the rod H will actuate the lever J, and, through the medium of the rod I, lower the-valve to its seat.
For the purpose of guiding the valve to and from its seat, therod I engages a guide bracket V upon theinner wall of the funnel, while in the modification shown in Fig.

1. In a funnel, the combination with the body portion and the discharge nozzle, of a valve controlling the discharge a float for actuating said valve loosely s eeved upon said nozzle, and an operative connection between said valve and float, for the purpose described.
2. Ina funnel, the combination with the body portion and the discharge-nozzle, of a vented guard surrounding said nozzle, a
'valve for controlling the discharge, and a float for actuating said valve positioned intermediate the guard and nozzle, and an operative connection between said valve and float, for the purpose described.
3. In a funnel, the combination with the body portion and the discharge nozzle, of av valve controlling the discharge, a float for actuating said valve loosely sleeved uponsaid nozzle, a cylindrical guard encircling said float and nozzle, and secured to the body; and a connection between the float and valve.
4. In a funnel, the combination with the body portion and the discharge nozzle, of a valve controlling the discharge, a fioat for actuating said valve loosely sleeved upon said nozzle, a cylindrical guard encircling said float and nozzle and secured to the body, a connection between the float and valve, and
means carried by the guard for limiting the downward movement of the float.
5. In a funnel, the combination with the body portion and the discharge nozzle, of a transverse partition positioned within the.
tending upward through the funnel body and said transverse partition, and pivotally secured to one end of said link, and'a connec tion between theother'end of the link and the valve.
6. In a funnel, the combination with the body portion and the discharge'nozzle, of a transverse partition positioned within the funnel body .having an aperture therein, a valve controllin said aperture, a float sleeved upon said nozzlefor automatically closing said valve, an open-ended tubular member having its upper end positioned in proximity to the funnel top and having its lower end extending through said transverse partition and secured to the funnel body, and a connection between said valve and float, including a rod secured to the float exgending upward through said tubular memer.
